Sources of Materia Medica

Physiological: Relating the chief areas of drugeffects of many inorganic substances, (like the Natrums, Kalis and Calcareas) to the role played by their constituents in human physiology. Pharmacological: Comprehend readily some of the Locations and types of changes induced by a drug like Nux vomica or Belladonna. www.similima.com

Sources of Materia Medica

Chemical: Group-characteristics can often be related to the common cation or to a dominant Anion, e.g. a Halogen.

At times, a salt can be readily understood in terms of its constituent elements, like Ferrum phosphoricum.

Sources of Materia Medica

Analogy (doctrine of signature): Relating some of the drug-effects to the characteristic of the substance or source or to its natural habitat. Examples - Snake venoms, Spider venoms, Sepia etc. Symbolism: Symbolism Linking the concepts of universal and human symbolism to materia medica by Jung, Whitmont etc.

Sources of Materia Medica

Grouping: Drugs could be conveniently grouped together for their similar effects or their opposite characteristics. The books on Homoeopathic Therapeutics illustrate the similar grouping; differential study of repertorial analysis is another instance of such a study. Substances from a similar source tend to have similar effects. Remedy relationship: One of the advanced methods of study of materia medica. www.similima.com 5

Sources of Materia Medica

Toxicological: Furnishes information about the Locations, Pathological changes, Scope and Sphere of application and coarse indications. Examples: Mercury, Phosphorus, Gelsemium. Render a general idea about the sphere of action which is mainly on CNS, CVS, extremities and skin. There are also subjective symptoms and change in behaviour after poisoning. The unnatural use of and ccidental overdosing produce many signs and symptoms. Hughes was an ardent follower of toxicological data.

Poison

A poison is commonly defined as a substance which, when administered, inhaled or swallowed, is capable of acting deleteriously on the body. In Law, the real difference between a medicine and a poison is in the intent with which it is given. If the substance is given with the intention to save life, it is a medicine but if it is given with the intention to cause bodily harm, it is a poison.

Corrosive Poison Group

Property to corrode. Affinity towards water and tissue fluid. Produces actual ulceration and destruction of the tissue. Consists of strong acids and strong alkalis.

The Group of Irritants

While corrosives lead to destruction, irritants lead to severe irritation. Both local and remote action. Remote action may progress to systemic effects. Produce symptoms of pain in the abdomen, vomiting and purging. Post-mortem appearances: Redness or ulceration of GIT. The group consists of inorganic, organic and mechanical substances.

Predominantly distal involvement in patients without demonstrable neuropathy is, however, uncommon.
