THE HOLY ROSARY

THE PREPARATORY PRAYERS

If the recitation of the Rosary is made as an act of prayer for specific objects, these may be declared here or before the collect that concludes the Preparatory Prayers. All make the Sign of the Cross with the crucifix, as the Leader begins,

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
All say,

I BELIEVE in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate of the Holy Ghost and the Virgin Mary, And was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father; And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father [and the Son]; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; And I look for the Resurrection of the dead; And the Life of the world to come. Amen.
If preferred, the Apostles Creed may be used instead of the above:

I BELIEVE in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: the Resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen. 8

On the first solitary bead, all pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Here may be said:

O Mary, conceived without sin: Pray for us who have recourse unto thee.
On the first small bead is said:

Hail Mary, full of grace: The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, who giveth us faith. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Son of Mary, Son of the living God, have mercy upon us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen.

On the second bead:

Hail Mary, full of grace: The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, who is our hope. Holy Mary,
On the third bead:

Son of Mary,

Hail Mary, full of grace: The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, who loveth us with an everlasting love. Holy Mary,
On the chain:

Son of Mary,

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. O, my Jesus, forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of hell; and bring all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy. Amen. Let us pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, hath purchased unto us the rewards of life eternal: Grant, we beseech thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the faith, we [together with those on behalf of whom we shall do so] may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9

(I.) Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts: that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (II.) Let us pray. O Christ, our God Incarnate, whose virgin Mother was blessed in bearing thee, but still more blessed in keeping thy word: Grant us, who honour the exaltation of her lowliness, to follow the example of her devotion to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen. (III.) Let us pray. Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen. (IV.) Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, we humbly beseech thy Majesty, that, as thy only-begotten Son was presented in the temple in substance of our flesh, so we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts, by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (V.) Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, who art the power and the wisdom of God: Grant that, whensoever we are bereft of the sense of thine abiding Presence, we may seek thee first in the midst of thy holy Temple, and there receive the words of life for thy glory, our comfort, and the good of all thy holy Church; who in unity with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen. And the Word was made flesh :
And dwelt among us. 11

THE CONCLUDING DEVOTIONS

x
While holding the medal (or the large bead), one of the following canticles is said. It is suggested that Magnificat appropriately follows the Joyful Mysteries, Surge, inluminare the Luminous, Dignus es, Domine the Sorrowful, and Gloria in excelsis Deo the Glorious. If desired, the Antiphon Salve Regina may be used in place of or in addition to these canticle

x
MAGNIFICAT ANIMA MEA
Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, * And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour; For he hath regarded * The lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth * All generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * And holy is his name; And his mercy is on them that fear him * Throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm, * He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts; He hath put down the mighty from their seats, * And hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * And the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

x
19

SURGE, INLUMINARE
Isaiah 60:1-3, 11a, 14c, 18-19

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, * and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, * and gross darkness the people: But the LORD shall arise upon thee, * and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, * and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; * they shall not be shut day nor night. They shall call thee; The city of the LORD, * The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. The sun shall be no more thy light by day; * neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: But the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, * and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; * neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: For the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, * and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

x
DIGNUS ES, DOMINE
Revelation 4:11; 5:12, 9b-10, 13b

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power, * for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. For thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood * out of every kindred and tongue and nation, And hast made us unto our God kings and priests; * And we shall reign on the earth. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, * to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and glory and blessing! Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, * And unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

x
GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

x
The following Antiphon of our Lady may be said here in addition to, or in place of, the foregoing Canticle or either of its substitutes:

SALVE REGINA and Collect Mary we hail thee, Mother and Queen compassionate; Mary our comfort, life, and hope, we hail thee. To thee we exiles, children of Eve, lift our crying; To thee we are sighing as, mournful and weeping, we pass through this vale of sorrow. Turn thou therefore, O our intercessor, those thine eyes of pity and loving-kindness upon us sinners. Hereafter, when our earthly exile shall be ended, show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb, O gentle, O tender, O gracious Virgin Mary
Leader People

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God; That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. 21

Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who by the co-operation of the Holy Ghost didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mother Mary to become a habitation meet for thy Son: Grant that as we rejoice in her commemoration, we may be delivered by her loving intercession from our present evils and from eternal death; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
[Translation from the Latin by Canon Winifred Douglas]

Here, on the three small beads, may be said an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory be for the intentions of the Holy Father, as well as those of the Bishops and other Pastors of the participants. An Act of Contrition may also be added, such as the following: My God, I love thee with my whole heart and above all things, and am heartily sorry that I have offended thee. May I never offend thee any more. O, may I love thee without ceasing and make it my delight to do in all things thy most holy will.

Almighty God, who hast promised to hear the petitions of those who ask in thy Sons Name: We beseech thee mercifully to incline thine ears to us who have now made our prayers and supplications unto thee; and grant that those things which we have faithfully asked according to thy will, may effectually be obtained, to the relief of our necessity, and to the setting forth of thy glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE PONDERING HEART THE BOOK AND THE APOSTOLATE The Pondering Heart rosary manual is offered as an electronically transmitted file free of charge. I ask only (1) that the source of the material be acknowledged appropriately if it is republished, (2) that I be sent a copy of each republished item, especially if it is modified from its original format, and (3) that users make a contribution in whatever kind or amount as they are able for the support of the apostolate and its minister. (Please be aware that at this early stage Spring, 2011 The Pondering Heart does not have tax-exempt status.) The ecumenically oriented Catholic apostolate which is named after this manual is entirely supported by the voluntary contributions of those who benefit from it. Please visit the web site at http://ThePonderingHeart.net to learn more about what this apostolate has to offer for the upbuilding of the Church and the reevangelization of Western culture and society. Two New Testament principles lie behind the decision to offer products of this apostolate without charge: First, Freely you have been given; freely give [Matthew 10:8]; second, Those who preach the gospel should live of the gospel [1 Corinthians 9:14]. My reluctance to put a price on any of the material that I am going to offer through this ministry stems from a perception of it as a gift to be passed on. Instead, I will put my confidence in Gods provision expressed through his people. Samuel L. Edwards, M.Div. The Pondering Heart 493 Camelot Drive Waynesville, NC 28786-2373
