It Makes Sense
1
How many mornings have you pulled the pillow over your head in an effort to silence the sound of the alarm calling you to the school day? It turns out theres a reason for that, and the reason is based on scientific research. Scientists at Stanford University in California have performed numerous research studies that show that teenagers need more sleep than they did as younger children. The scientists also found that a specific chemical formed in teenagers bodies changes their sleep cycle. This causes them to be wide awake late into the night, and not always on purpose! Most teenagers, it has been found, are not ready for sleep when everyone else in the family is. Many lie awake long past the ten oclock family bedtime, some until the early hours of the morning. This means that they have not had nearly enough sleep when its time to get up and get ready for school the next day. Sure, teenagers need school. They also need sleep for the health of their ever-developing bodies and minds. I do not argue with the fact that school is important. I just happen to thinkas do many scientiststhat sleep is important, too. How can we solve this dilemma? Should we continue to force teenagers to get up and go to school early in the morning, even if they have had only a few hours of sleep? We know that students who have had little sleep often fall asleepunintentionallyat their desks. Perhaps we should rethink the schedule and start school later in the day, allowing teens to get the rest they need and be ready for a vigorous day of study. Just think how much more a teen might learn if he or she were more alert during all classes. If they had plenty of restorative sleep, young people would be healthy and have more enthusiasm for their studies. Who knows what great things might begin happening?

Carnival Decision
1
Its almost February, Marcos said as he and his friends walked home from school in Ponce.
2 3
So? Christian answered. So, should we wear masks at the carnival this year? I want to get in on the fun, Marcos said, grinning broadly at his two companions. I dont know. Jorge hesitated. Ive never made a mask, and Im not very good with my hands.
Neither am I, but Im willing to learn, Christian said enthusiastically. Ive watched both my father and my grandfather make their vejigante masks for most of my life. Still . . ., Jorge spoke carefully, I think Ill just go as myself again this year. . . . Thats your decision, Marcos told him. Then, turning to Christian, he said, Wed better start working on the masks right away. No kidding! But first, what kind are you going to make? I dont want to make an antagonistic vejigante, Christian said. I want my mask to be a friendly one. Me too, Marcos answered. Ive seen some great animal masks, but Ill have to think about it for awhile. Okay. Listen, we can probably use my grandfathers workroom when we make the masks. Ill check with him as soon as I get home, Christian offered. Jorge quietly separated from them and headed home, as Christian called to him, Are you sure, Jorge? Youll be sorry later. We plan on having a great time making our masks. Jorge just nodded and waved goodbye. Christian and Marcos decided to get started that evening, and Christian went home to ask for his grandfathers permission to use the workroom. Later that evening, they were covered in paper and glue, and by the next afternoon, their masks were dry enough to begin painting. The boys worked exuberantly, joking and laughing as they began finishing their masks. I brought paint in all different colors, Marcos said, and youre welcome to use them. Thanks, answered Christian. I just need some red, yellow, and green for my rooster.

Ive never seen a red, yellow, and green rooster, Marcos commented, and no rooster has a grin like that on its face. What about your mask? What, exactly, is it supposed to be? Marcos answered him with a smile, A parrot, of course. I think Ill make him a purple parrot! Purple? Christian laughed. Your parrot will look like a glass of grape juice! Just then they heard a knock, and Christian went to open the door. Jorge stood there, glancing longingly at the masks, and said, Hey, those are great! Then, with obvious discomfort, he asked, Do you think there is still time for me to make one?
