A. Standard of Competence To understand the functional meaning of text and short simple essay in reported speech to interact with the environment in daily life and to access the information. B. Basic Competence - Responding the meaning of short functional text in reported speech accurately, fluently, and acceptable to interact with the environment. - Expressing the meaning in simple text that use spoken language accurately, fluently and acceptable in reported speech C. Indicator - Understand the using of Reported Speech (Indirect Speech) - Apply Reported Speech in students daily life. D. Objectives At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to: - Change the words direct speech into indirect speech (Reported Speech). - Answer the question of Reported Speech

E. Teaching Material Definition of Report Text Indirect Speech (also referred to as 'reported speech') refers to a sentence reporting what someone has said. It is almost always used in spoken English. If the reporting verb (i.e. said) is in the past, the reported clause will be in a past form. This form is usually one step back into the past from the original. Example: The direct speech: "I like it," he said. "Irene is late," he thought. "I will pass the exam," she hoped. The reported speech: He said he liked it. He thought that Irene was late. She hoped she would pass the exam. Some things that we have to give attention in making Reported Speech in Affirmative Sentence. - Omit the punctuation - Supply the word that - Change the pronoun if any - Change the tense as follows: Direct Speech Present simple She said, "It's cold." Present continuous She said, "I'm teaching English online." Indirect Speech Past simple She said it was cold. Past continuous She said she was teaching English online.

Present perfect simple She said, "I've been on the web since 1999." Present perfect continuous She said, "I've been teaching English for seven years." Past simple She said, "I taught online yesterday." Past continuous She said, "I was teaching earlier." Past perfect She said, "The lesson had already started when he arrived." Past perfect continuous She said, "I'd already been teaching for five minutes." Modal verb forms also sometimes change: Will She said, "I'll teach English online tomorrow." Can She said, "I can teach English online." Must She said, "I must have a computer to teach English online." Shall She said, "What shall we learn today?" May She said, "May I open a new browser?"
