2012 WV Wing Summer Encampment

I am very pleased to announce the successful completion of the 2012 WV Wing Cadet Summer Encampment. The encampment was, once again, held at Camp Dawson, the WV National Guard Training Base, in Kingwood, WV. This year, 109 cadets graduated from the encampment training course; 89 West Virginia Wing cadets, 8 Ohio Wing cadets, 8 Maryland Wing cadets, 2 Pennsylvania Wing cadets, and 2 Virginia Wing cadets. This was the largest cadet encampment for the WV Wing in over 20 years. major construction at the base, standing cadets of the encampthe usual Pass and Review Pa- ment. My thanks and appreciation for all their hard work and efforts in order to make this such a successful encampment. See Encampment on page 2

During the week, the cadets experienced a taste of military life by flying in a C-130 cargo aircraft, as well as a Blackhawk helicopter. They rappelled down an 80 foot rappel tower, were challenged by the Leadership Reaction Course, shot rifles on the firing range, launched model rockets that Despite extremely hot tempera- they had built, and learned tures at the beginning of the about Land and Water Survivencampment week, there were al. Common Ground
http://wvde.state.wv.us/common-ground/ Last year, WV Wing Commander, Col Dennis Barron, signed the Common Ground Partnership Memorandum Of Understanding, at the West Virginia State Capitol. This MOU established a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia Board of Education, the WV Wing Civil Air Patrol, and the United States military recruiting organizations which serve West Virginia. On August 2 & 3, as part of the Common Ground Partnership, a Student Success Summit was held at the Waterfront Place Hotel and Conference Center, in Morgantown, WV. Part of this event included a "Gallery Walk", which provided the opportunity for the CAP and other public organizations to display information about their programs and services to the participants at the Summit .

A Letter From Maj Petty

As most of you know, I am stepping down as Squadron Commander effective 30 September. We've accomplished a lot since January 2010. We finished the classroom space in our hangar. We completed construction of a sidewalk for the classroom entrance. We now have a number of active Ground Team trainees. Our Cadet Program, the largest in WV, continues to shine. We have participated in SAREX's, an actual Search and Rescue Mission, the Martinsburg Air Show, the Joint Services Open House, and much more. In the past year we've had a number of new Senior Members step up and take on staff positions. Our senior staff has the fewest vacancies in recent memory.

There are so many of you who have contributed your time and your talents to this squadron, too many to name in this small space. We could not have accomplished what we have so far without your hard work and dedication. I congratulate all of you on our achievements. Cadets, continue to work the Cadet Program and progress up the ranks. Dont forget Cadet Orientation flights - you cant get those most anywhere else! CAP has much to offer and the more you take advantage of it the better off you will be. Senior Members, please continue to participate as much as you can, the squadron cannot exist without your efforts. I will see you all from time to time and I hope to remain active in the squadron in some capacity.
