Should the British land at Yorktown, I shall raise a company of men, and drive them back into the sea. ~ Thomas Nelson, Jr., of Yorktown, at Saint Johns Church in Richmond, 23 March anno domini 1775 Followed by then Colonel George Washington who rose to speak based on Numbers 31:4, Raise up a thousand men from every tribe and take them off to war. George Washington spoke in support of Thomas Nelsons call to create a Militia, I will raise an army of a thousand men, subsist them at my own expense, and march at their head to the relief of Boston. These wise men were followed by Patrick Henrys famous words: Three millions of people, armed in the Holy Cause of Liberty are invincible... ...Give me Liberty, or Give me Death! In the spring of 1778, Nelson was awarded the rank of Brigadier General of the Virginia Militia, and was elected to the lower house of the legislature. Congress asked wealthy men in the Colonies to form troops of light cavalry. General Thomas Nelson, partially at his own expense, outfitted, and trained a unit; then marched it northward to Philadelphia in July. In August, also in 1778, the unit returned home after Congress decided it was not needed.
