Introduction

Banglalink is one of the largest foreign direct investments and the second largest cellular service provider in Bangladesh. The company has the backing of the international telecoms powerhouse Orascom. After its inception, the company has growth rapidly into the leading mobile phone service provider of the country. Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. ("Orascom Telecom") or ("OTH") was established in 1998 and has grown to become a major player in the telecommunication market. OTH is considered among the largest and most diversified network operators in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, and has acquired in early 2008 a license to operate mobile services in North Korea. Orascom Telecom Holdings is operating in 9 countries of the world. The subsidiaries include Egypt, Algeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, Iraq, Bangladesh, Congo Brazzaville, Zimbabwe, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Banglalinks success was based on a simple mission: "bringing mobile telephony to the masses" which was the cornerstone of its strategy. Banglalink changed the mobile phone usage status from luxury to a necessity in Bangladesh, bringing it to the general people making a place in their hearts. The mobile phone, since then, has become the symbol for the positive change in Bangladesh. This positive change that is quite correctly attributed to Banglalink has become the corporate positioning of Banglalink and is translated in their slogan "making a difference" or "din bodol". Banglalink is the second largest cellular service provider in Bangladesh. T h e n u m b e r of Banglalink users increased by more than 253 per cent and stood at 3.64 million at the end of 2006 and ended 2007 at 7.1 million subscribers base,making it one of the fastest growing operators in the world. Bangladesh has the lowest telephone penetration rates in the world andeven in South Asia. According to a report by the International Telecommunication union (ITU),only 1.56 among 100 people of Bangladesh own telecom facilities. When Banglalink entered the Bangladesh telecom industry, the scenario

changed overnight with mobiletelephony becoming an extremely useful and affordable communication tool for people across all segments. Within one year of operation, Banglalink became the fastest growing mobile operator of the country with a growth rate of 257 percent. This milestone was achieved with innovativeand attractive products and services targeting the different market segments ; aggressiveimprovement of network quality and dedicated customer care ; and effective communication that emotionally connected customers with Banglalink. Banglalink entered the market with a promise of making mobile phone affordable for people. This promise was kept and Banglalink was thefirst operator to introduce a flat rate for all calls for the convenience and ease of customers.Throughout the year, Banglalink continued offering products and services approaching different consumer segments with distinct communication needs.
