John DiSantis Wins PBA East Region Knob Hill Senior Open
By Russ Mills - PBA MANALAPAN, NJ - John DiSantis of Wilmington, Del., defeated Bob Caruso of Dayton, N.J., 242-163 to win his first Professional Bowlers Association East Region title in the Knob Hill Senior Open Sunday at Knob Hill Lanes. DiSantis earned $1,500 while Caruso took home $875 as the runner-up. DiSantis defeated defending champion Gary Shultis of Levittown, N.Y. 234-178, and Caruso defeated Jay Boyle of Garnet Valley, Pa., 245-149, in the semifinal round. Both semifinal round losers earned $675. In the Round of 8 where its the best of three games with the losers eliminated and earned $575 each: DiSantis def. David Zelger, Red Lion, Pa., 2-1; Caruso def. Mike Tryniski, Fulton, N.Y., 2-0; Shultis def. John Conroy, Mahopac, N.Y., 2-1; Boyle def. Mike Hastings, Millsboro, Del., 2-1. I made a lot of top 10s last season, but I never even threatened for a show. Thats what I wanted to do coming into the World Series. I worked really hard on my game over the summer and its paying off. In the title match, ONeill admitted thoughts of bowling a nationally-televised 300 games began dancing in his head after building a big lead with seven strikes to start the contest. Wolfe, who didnt throw consecutive strikes until the seventh and eighth frames, was all but eliminated after six frames. When I got the strike in the seventh frame, I knew I just needed one more mark to lock up the title, he said. I got to thinking it would be really cool to shoot 300, because Tony Reyes bowled 300 for his first title on this lane condition, and that was kind of going through my mind. I got a little jittery in the eighth and threw it a little quick, and left the 2-8-10. Thats what happened.

Reigning U.S. Open champions Pete Weber and Kelly Kulick participated in the annual Chicago Sun-Times/BPA Beat the Champions fundraising event in Chicago where they posted target scores which thousands of Chicago area league bowlers will try to beat (with handicap). As part of the event, Weber and Kulick threw strikes in the fifth and 10th frames worth $100 each, raising a combined $1,300 for charity. Kulick earned $800 for Project Restoration to benefit victims of Super Storm Sandy in New Jersey while Weber generated $500 for St. Joachim and St. Ann Care Service, an organization that helps St. Louis area homeless people get back on their feet.

You can't be more amazed than when you spend some time with todays younger generations. Whether it is them displaying their flying fingers on computers, their flying feet in gymnastics or their rolling the ball and making parents and grandparents take a good second look at their talent, mentally and physically. All sports and all fields have their child prodigies. There have been teenagers in every major sport, and many in their early teens, particularly in swimming and tennis. Many of them have been great or gone on to greatness, at great sacrifice, being forced to grow up too quickly, being forced to choose between fame and fortune early, or after a suitable stretch of education. In the dream world it would be wonderful if every young athlete in every sport was forced to obtain a high school education at a minimum, and college or other advanced training as a recommended path. But the real world doesn't work out so neatly. Some really young baseball, basketball, tennis and hockey phenoms can and do make millions of dollars before they can legally drink or vote. How and when do you tell them they are too young or too unprepared? At 17 they can be accepted into the armed services and put their lives on the line. So how can you realistically ask any youngster talented way beyond their years to put a hold on opportunities and riches that may not be there later. In many cases it is boys against men, and girls against women. But boys grow up fast

these days and women aren't nearly as mere as they used to be. Bowlers are amazingly adept at early ages. You can visit any junior program and see obvious talent. But, at 15 many bowlers have been bowling for a decade, and bowling at pro class calibre for years. By the time they are ready for college, many are ready for a shot at the pro tours or the big money tournaments. Look at the Mark Roths, Johnny Petraglias and Pete Webers and a list of thousands and you could see super stars in the making at ages of 17 or younger. Junior bowlers can't be reminded too often that a 200 game is fine, but an "A" in any subject is better. A tournament win is terrific, but the Honor Roll is more terrific. A 300 game or even a 900 series is great, but a diploma is the greatest. In bowling there is no reason why both areas cannot be encouraged. A high school or college student can utilize his time so much can be spent on bowling and much can be spent on study. And students can map out a schedule that covers both sides, and gives them the best of both worlds. Parents, bowling coaches and bowling officials have a duty to counsel young bowlers and not to put too much pressure on them in either way, except to use common sense. Education should always come first, but bowling is an education too, if used wisely, whether you're a shooting star or a struggler. But always hit the books as hard as you hit the pins.

John Draney and Erin Lynch Shine In High School Crusader Classic
By Vince Albrecht HACKENSACK, NJ - High School Senior John Draney fired 685 to lead North Jersey powerhouse Hackensack to its second consecutive Boys Team Title in the 2nd Annual Crusader Classic at Bowler City. The pre-season top ranked Comets easily outdistanced Jefferson and Paramus Catholic with a 3035 three-game set, finishing with a blistering 1120. The Girls Title went to Holy Angels behind the efforts of senior Erin Lynch 240-579 and junior Clarissa Hernandez 533. Runner-up last year, the Angels were not to be denied this time as the team posted 2485, outscoring second place Immaculate Heart 2358 and third place Paramus Catholic 2287. Joe Cifrodella Wins Marathon

LODI, NJ - The scores were hot and heavy in the Goodbrothers 5Game Handicap Marathon at Lodi Lanes, with a 299 from Jimmy Medina, a 290 from Tom Flynn, and a 279/278 combo by Dave Cahoon. Joe Cifrodella didn't shoot those, but a steady consistent stream of 230's and 240's led him to the win and the $1,000 first prize. Flynn, who came in second for $700, walked off with over a grand taking the scratch division.

PBA STAR CHRIS BARNES UNDERGOES GALL BLADDER SURGERY

Former PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, will be home for the holidays after undergoing gall bladder removal surgery Tuesday, according to a Facebook note posted by his wife, Lynda Barnes. The 14-time PBA Tour titlist had just returned home from the Qatar Open, where he finished 13th. Barnes had been experiencing abdominal pain recently, and an ultrasound performed upon his return identified gall stones, Lynda Barnes reported. He was released from the hospital Thursday morning. Assuming no complications, Barnes said he expects to participate in the fifth annual Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars fundraiser on Jan. 7 in Los Angeles.
