SMART POWER GENERATION

ENABLING THE TRANSITION TO A MORE MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

Electricity consumption will continue to grow rapidly all over the world during the coming decades. At the same time, concerns related to global warming and declining fossil fuel resources have created a need, supported by political pressure, to reduce carbon emissions through renewable power. At present, renewable sources, hydropower excluded, cover less than 3% of total production, but their share is rapidly growing. Providing intermittency problems can be efficiently resolved, wind or solar based electricity offers great potential. The variability of wind and solar power creates new challenges to power systems which cannot be solved by any grid solution. Even small variations in wind speed which can happen many times per day within time frames of less than 15 minutes have a dramatic impact on wind power output. In power systems with high shares of installed wind power capacity, this is a challenge which the system is not designed to handle.

The existing power systems need to be complemented by dispatchable, dynamic capacity with the capability of handling frequent fast starts, stops and load ramps. To ensure a sustainable, reliable and affordable power system a dynamic capacity which corresponds to ~ 50% of the installed intermittent power capacity is required. SMART POWER GENERATION BALANCES THE POWER SYSTEM Wrtsil Smart Power Generation is a unique combination of features offering excellent operational flexibility, high efficiency and fuel flexibility, together with low emissions and proven long-term reliability. Wrtsil power plants have these features, which make them suitable for a number of different power system functions. The applications range from stationary and floating baseload power plants to dynamic grid stability and peaking services, as well as a wide variety of industrial self-generation applications. Reservoir hydropower, where available, and smart grids with demand response, assist in the balancing task. When complementing the power system with Smart Power Generation, all system balancing challenges can be solved, even with the maximised use of intermittent renewables.

SMART POWER GENERATION

OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY
Being able to operate in multiple modes, from efficient baseload power production to dynamic system balancing, Wrtsil power plants become a key factor in optimising power systems. They can generate megawatts to the grid in one minute from start-up and reach full load in five. They are designed to start and stop at the push of a button time after time without impact on maintenance. They ensure fast reserve, load following, and peaking capability, with a typical plant availability of 95%, plant reliability of 97% and starting reliability of more than 99%. Smart Power Generation plants are also easy to locate next to critical load pockets, i.e. in cities, thanks to their plant size, and low emission and noise levels. The infrastructural requirements are also modest, with little or no water consumption, and low pipeline gas pressure (5 bar) needed. Furhermore, locating Smart Power Generation capacity in load pockets notably reduces grid investment costs.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Smart Power Generation plants based on multiple generating units are far more reliable and fuel efficient than single or several large power stations. They also serve efficiently on part load and in demanding ambient conditions, enabling high dispatch even in hot climates and at high altitudes.

Smart Power Generation

FUEL FLEXIBILITY
6

OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY

We also offer the highest available simple cycle energy efficiency of current technologies, 48% or more. With the Flexicycle solution the advantages of a flexible simple cycle plant are combined with the superb efficiency of a combined cycle plant.

FUEL FLEXIBILITY
Smart Power Generation enables the continuous choice of the most feasible fuel, including solutions for liquid and gaseous fuels as well as renewables. The possibilities gained from multi-fuel plants and fuel conversion solutions represent a hedge for the future. The role of natural gas in power generation is expected to grow significantly over the coming years. Recent technical breakthroughs and the commercialisation of shale gas have resulted in a substantial extension of the perceived depletion time of gas reserves, and have lowered the price of natural gas. With Smart Power Generation plants running on gas, the 20% renewable energy share target set for 2020 by many nations is within reach.
7

SMART POWER GENERATION

MULTIPLE OPERATING MODES

The flexibility of Smart Power Generation is emphasised by its capability to serve various operating modes. These include: zz Base load generation z The technology is proven in base load applications with close to 49GW of references worldwide zz Rapid load following in the morning zz Starting and loading units one by one as the load increases zz Peaking during high demand periods zz Balancing wind power i.e. Wind chasing zz Starting, loading and stopping rapidly when wind conditions change zz System balancing z Fast frequency regulation and efficient spinning reserve zz Ultra fast, zero-emissions, non-spinning grid reserve for any contingency situation z Starting and producing power in just 1 minute, and reaching full power in just 5 minutes zz Fast grid black start in case of a power system black out
8

NURTURING ALL POWER NEEDS

The right amount of power at the right time is what Smart Power Generation is all about. By enabling the maximum integration of wind and solar power capacity, and through overcoming the challenges created by wind variability and curtailment, Smart Power Generation offers a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy supply. Similarly, it removes the abusive stops and starts, and eliminates cyclic load from baseload plants that are not designed for such variations. This serves to optimise the operation of the entire power system and greatly enhances its overall efficiency and stability, while also reducing the overall emissions. Smart Power Generation also allows power producers to operate on multiple markets, for example by selling power to energy markets and selling fast starting and ramping capabilities to ancillary services and capacity markets. The high efficiency levels enable high dispatch, while the multiple parallel generating units offer dependability in making commitments. Plant delivery can be ordered on a fast-track basis, and full OEM and O&M services are available.

COMBINED CYCLES
ENGINE COMBINED CYCLE In terms of power production, our diesel and gas medium-speed engines are very efficient, already from their design and construction. The engine gross electrical efficiency at the alternator is 4649% and in combined cycle the net electrical efficiency is more than 52% at full load. This electrical efficiency is remarkably high, even when compared with large-sized power plants based on other technologies. The rest of the engine fuel input emerges in the form of heat in the exhaust gases and engine cooling. These engine waste heat sources can be utilised for valuable heat production. However, in many places there is no heat sink where the waste heat can be used, and therefore secondary power generation is preferred, recovering all waste heat for generating additional power, as in an engine combined cycle (ECC) configuration. The most common technique in ECCs is based upon conventional steam bottoming cycles with engine wise steam generators, a common steam turbine and a cooling system. Nevertheless, very high total plant efficiencies are easily obtainable, and with this ECC technique an addition in plant power output of 8 to more than 10% is achievable by using standardised steam cycle designs.

COMBINED HEAT & POWER

Wrtsils combined heat and power (CHP) plants incorporate both power and heat generation. The system for heat generation, in parallel with the production of electricity, steam, hot water, or chilled water, is optimally designed for the customers specific needs and requirements. Total plant efficiencies can rise to 90% and even higher. CHP plants can run on various fuels while maintaining low emissions and high efficiency. The heat recovery systems can be defined as post engine hang-on types, and do not directly affect either engine performance or running. The engine will give the same high electrical efficiencies and output, regardless of the rate of heat production. CHP plants run with significantly less fuel input than separate power and heat generation. Wrtsils CHP solutions for district cooling and trigeneration are attractive solutions for large facilities such as airports, shopping centres, housing areas, and other building complexes with substantial heating and cooling demands. Depending on the customers heating and/or cooling requirements, plant location, and the seasonal variations in ambient conditions, the plant can be equipped with standardised heat recovery and chiller solutions, with absorption chillers for heat recovery and electrically driven chillers for covering the peak demands.

UTILISING ASSOCIATED GASES AS FUEL

The World Bank led Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership (GGFR) estimates that globally, more than 130 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas are flared or burned every year, causing some 400 million tons of carbon dioxide in annual emissions. That is equivalent to 30% of the European Unions gas consumption. Gas flaring not only harms the environment but also deprives countries of an energy source that is often cleaner and cheaper than others available. During the production of crude oil, gas usually comes to the surface as well and is often vented or flared instead of being used, particularly in locations that lack effective gas markets, and the necessary infrastructure to utilise the gas. Wrtsil gas-diesel technology revolutionises the concept of fuel flexibility. Thanks to the unique pilot fuel injection method for initiating combustion, associated gas can be used for power generation, mechanical drives or gas reinjection at the oil field. If the supply of gas varies in quantity and quality, the answer is fuel sharing. The basic concept provides electrical power generation for the field facility processes, from upstream to downstream oil shipping pumps. This power

generation can even be provided with a combined heat and power (CHP) system, if needed. The excess of associated gas can be injected into the hydrocarbon reservoir to maintain the pressure, to enhance oil recovery, or even to be stored for later gas production. The separated water can also be injected using GD-engine driven high pressure pumps. The injection of excess associated gas underground is the ultimate flaring reduction solution, unless other gas utilisation systems are available.

FUEL flexibility

Wrtsil engines are able to run on a wide selection of fuels, ranging from natural gas to fuel-water emulsions. Fuels such as crude oil, fuel-water emulsions, associated gas, liquid biofuel, biogas and other fuels outside globally recognised standard fuel specifications, should be carefully analysed for each power plant project prior to use. Due to the nature of these types of fuels their quality might vary over time, and consequently fuel quality analyses should be carried out on a regular basis.

GASEOUS FUELS
NATURAL GAS Natural gas of commercial pipeline quality. These gases consist mainly of methane and are processed to meet guaranteed specifications for heating value, Wobbe index and cleanliness.

ASSOCIATED GAS Associated gas is a constituent that is separated from crude oil in oil field degassing equipment. The methane content is less than in natural gas, but the concentration of heavier hydrocarbons is higher, thus normally producing a high heating value. Gas-diesel engines are very suitable for burning associated gas, either in normal gas-diesel mode or using the fuel sharing mode. BIO GASES Bio gases are the result of treating biological matter in digesters or through other decomposing processes. The resulting gas consists of methane and carbon dioxide. COAL BED NATURAL GAS Coal bed natural gas is collected from underground coal layers. It contains methane, water and carbon dioxide in varying concentrations.
59

FUEL flexibility
NATURAL GAS
Wrtsil gas engines are designed and developed for continuous operation on natural gas, without reduction in the rated output, and on gas qualities according to the specifications below. Gases other than pipeline quality natural gas can also be used and are considered on a case by case basis.

1) The required gas feed pressure is depending on the LHV, e.g. for SG and DF engines 28 MJ/m3N requires a 6 bar pressure for full engine output. In GD engines low LHV can be compensated with fuel sharing. 2) Values for volume (m3N) are given at 0C and 101.3 kPa. 3) SG and DF engine outputs is depending on the Methane Number. Full engine output at highest efficiency is achieved at MN80, lower MN can be used with an influence on engine performance and may cause derating of the engine. GD engines are not affected by MN. Methane Number (MN) can be assigned to any gaseous fuel based on its composition and it gives a scale to compare the resistance to knock of different gases. The MN is calculated by Wrtsil. 4) If the hydrogen content of gas is higher than 3.0 vol-%, or the methane content is lower than 70 vol-% the use of gas has to be considered case by case. 5) Dew point of natural gas is below the minimum operating temperature and pressure.

LIQUID FUELS
LIGHT FUEL OIL Light fuel oils or diesel oils are high value distillates that have traditionally been used to fuel diesel engine power plants, both for standby operation and baseload applications. The use of light fuel oils in baseload applications has decreased since it has become possible to use cheaper lower grade fuels. There are, however, certain applications, such as backup power plants, and installations on islands and in arctic conditions, where light fuel oil is still the preferred alternative. HEAVY FUEL OILS Heavy fuel oils are blended products based on the residues from various refinery distillation and cracking processes. They are black viscous liquids which require heating for storage and combustion. Heavy fuel oils are used for diesel engines in power plant and marine applications. CRUDE OIL Crude oil is a highly complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other components. The flash point of crude oil is low, typically below the ambient temperature. Crude oil can also be used as fuel in power plants with diesel

engines, for example in oilfield power production. Another application is for pumping stations located along a crude oil pipeline, where fuel from the pipeline can be used for the prime movers. LIQUID BIOFUEL Liquid biofuels are derived from biological material and can be produced from a variety of carbon sources. Common liquid biofuels approved for use in Wrtsil engines include oils from various oilseeds, such as palm oil, palm stearin, rape seed oil, sunflower oil and jatropha oil. Liquid biofuels can also be of non vegetable origin, i.e. oils or fats from fish, poultry and animals. Refined biofuel qualities such as transesterified biodiesel or hydrogenated renewable diesel, can also be used. FUEL-WATER EMULSION An oil-in-water type emulsion is one way of utilising the residue coming from a refinery as fuel in a diesel power plant. By making an emulsion with water the viscosity is dramatically reduced, enabling it to be pumped at ambient temperature in warm countries. Using it in the diesel engine requires only a fraction of the heating needed for heavy fuel oil.

1) Max. 1010 kg/m3 at 15C, provided the fuel treatment system is designed accordingly. 2) Straight run residues show CCAI values in the 770 to 840 range and are very good ignitors. Cracked residues delivered as bunkers may range from 840 to in exceptional cases above 900. Most bunkers remain in the max. 850 to 870 range at the moment. 3) Sodium contributes to hot corrosion on exhaust valves when combined with high sulphur and vanadium contents. Sodium also strongly contributes to fouling of the exhaust gas turbine blading at high loads. The aggressiveness of the fuel depends on its proportions of sodium and vanadium, but also on the total amount of ash. Hot corrosion and deposit formation are, however, also influenced by other ash constituents. It is therefore difficult to set strict limits based only on the sodium and vanadium content of the fuel. Also a fuel with lower sodium and vanadium contents than specified above, can cause hot corrosion on engine components. 4) Additional properties specified by the engine manufacturer, which are not included in the ISO specification. 5) A fuel shall be considered to be free of used lubricating oil (ULO), if one or more of the elements calcium, zinc and phosphorus are below or at the specified limits. All three elements shall exceed the same limits before a fuel shall be deemed to contain ULO.

MODULAR SOLUTIONS
A module is a self-contained component of a system, which has a well-defined interface to the other components. Something is modular if it includes or uses modules, which can be interchanged as units without disassembly of the module. As energy demand grows, the high modularity of Wrtsils products makes it easy to expand a power plant to meet increasing future demand. The common interfaces and flexibility of Wrtsils modular design, fulfilling a range of specifications and recommendations, addresses both the demand of todays customer and potential future needs. The focus of modularisation is around the engine and inside the power house, even though modules are also used elsewhere, starting with the unloading of fuel, lubricating oil and other process-related items. By using predefined modular solutions, Wrtsil can ensure that set performance targets are reached. Rapid installation time is one of the main benefits. Prefabrication also ensures consistent high quality. Other benefits include the compact and predefined design for container transportation, and the use of well-proven components from well-known suppliers. The use of portfolio modules leads to higher documentation quality during the tender phase. When compared to carrying out such work on site, the controlled manufacturing, cleaning, and painting processes associated with modularisation, have a positive environmental impact. For customers, modularised design means higher total feasibility in their power plant investment.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION AND MONITORING

One of the principal aims of Wrtsils Power Plants business is to maintain a high level of expertise in cleaning methods for different power plant effluents and emissions, and to offer a variety of proven reduction technologies for different market needs. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (PM) emissions are insignificant for power plants running on natural gas. Nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions are also low. DRY METHODS (PRIMARY) Modern Otto gas engines use the lean-burn combustion process. In this process, natural gas and air are premixed in a low fuel/air ratio before being fed into the cylinders. The lean-burn process efficiently reduces NOX emissions due to a lower combustion temperature. An added advantage with the leanburn process is the high output and efficiency of the engine. Gas-fired lean-burn engines have sufficiently low NOX emissions to comply with most national/local regulations using lean-burn primary methods only. SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) In areas that are subject to stringent control of NOX emissions due to, for example, existing pollution levels in degraded airsheds or very strict local regulations, gas-fired engines can be equipped with SCR units. In the SCR, NOX emissions are reduced by a reagent that is either an aqueous solution of urea or ammonia. The SCR units can even reduce NOX emissions to a single digit level with lean-burn engines (in natural gas mode). OXIDATION CATALYSTS Gas-fired spark-ignited (SG) and dual-fuel (DF) engines can be equipped with oxidation catalysts for the abatement of carbon monoxide (CO) and/or hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, if required by national regulations or local air pollution levels. WRTSIL IOXI The Wrtsil IOXI (Integrated Oxidation Catalyst) is a compact, cost efficient product that is applicable for moderate CO and formaldehyde (CH2O) reduction
76

EMISSIONS REDUCTION GAS ENGINES

The Humboldt power plant, located in Eureka, California, consists of 10 Wrtsil 18V50DF gas engines and has a total output of 162 MW. The dual fuel (DF) engines are able to operate on light fuel oil as back-up. The plant is equipped with combined SCRs and oxidation catalysts and is capable of meeting the strict Californian emission requirements both in gas and liquid fuel mode.

from gas engines. Gas engines equipped with IOXI can comply with stack emission limits of stationary regulations such as Germanys TA Luft 2002. COMBINED SCR AND OXIDATION CATALYST In some areas efficient multi-component emissions reduction is required. The combined catalyst system comprises SCR for NOX emissions and catalytic oxidation for CO and/or HC emissions. In combination with the combined catalyst system, a thorough optimisation of the engine operation under different conditions is carried out. This ensures the best overall performance.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION DIESEL ENGINES

Nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (PM) are the main emissions of interest regarding stationary diesel engines. SO2 and PM emissions are mainly related to the quality of the liquid fuel. Diesel engines used in the power industry have low carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions thanks to their high thermal efficiency. Wrtsils product development strategy for fuel oil-fired diesel power plants is to meet the stack emission limits set by the World Bank/IFC General/ Thermal Power Plants EHS Guidelines 2007/2008, for new stationary combustion engine installations up to 300 MWth in non-degraded airsheds by using dry primary methods. Secondary flue gas treatment methods are available for meeting emission requirements when necessary due to strict regulations, or when only low grade liquid fuels are commercially available.

DRY METHODS (PRIMARY) The target of dry primary methods in the Wrtsil engine development process is to achieve the best overall emissions performance, while maintaining the good thermal efficiency of the engine. The main elements of the Low-NOX combustion process in Wrtsil diesel engines are: zz Late fuel injection start zz High compression ratio zz Optimised combustion chamber zz Optimised fuel injection rate profile zz Early inlet valve closing (Miller concept) together with high boost pressure. These are the key elements for suppressing the combustion peak temperatures, resulting in reduced NOX formation.
79

PLANT TECHNOLOGY
SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) Wrtsils diesel engine power plants can be equipped with SCR units to reduce NOX emissions if required. NOX emissions are typically reduced by up to 8090% by using a reagent that is either an aqueous solution of urea or ammonia. The composition and structure of the catalyst element are selected based on fuel properties. At high reduction rates, the size of the SCR reactor increases and more complicated premixing and reagent injection systems are needed. In addition the control system becomes very critical due to operation within a narrow window. FLUE GAS DE-SULPHURISATION (FGD) Several FGD types are available for the power plant market. The most feasible methods in stationary engine plants have generally been proven to be wet sodium hydroxide (NaOH) FGD in smaller plants, and wet calcium carbonate (CaCO3) FGD in larger plants. Wet FGD systems are typically capable of removing up to 90% of the SO2 emissions. All wet FGD solutions require large quantities of water and reagents. The FGD end products produced, either liquid or solid depending on the chosen FGD technique, need to be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable way. The composition of the end product depends on the fuel oil used, lubrication oil, process water and reagents. The disposal and utilisation options available for the end product should be examined in the environmental assessment of the project, by considering the existing infrastructure and legislation/regulations. ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR (ESP) A dry ESP unit can be used to reduce PM emissions. The ESP technique provides a stable, low pressure-loss option to reduce PM emissions. ESPs dry end product, fly ash, needs to be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable way. The composition of the end product depends on the fuel and lubrication oil used. The disposal and utilisation options available for the end product should be examined in the environmental assessment of the project, by considering the existing infrastructure and legislation/regulations.

EMISSIONS MONITORING

The measurement of emissions on a regular basis, e.g. annually, in combination with strict compliance with fuel specifications, is commonly used for ensuring compliance with emission requirements.
80

In cases where continuous data on emission levels is required, indicative or parametric emissions monitoring systems will provide robust, good quality and cost efficient emissions monitoring. In these systems, emissions are calculated based on process data, such as engine parameters, fuel composition and ambient data. In some installations, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) based on analysers are required. There are many different CEMS on the market and the choice of system needs to take into careful consideration the installations specific features, such as measured components, fuel and stack configuration. The integration of emissions data handling and reporting into the plant system is a crucial part of a successful emissions monitoring system.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION EFFLUENTS

The oily water collection and treatment system is an essential part of the engine power plant. The system is designed to collect water from areas that are potentially contaminated with oil and other impurities for treatment. Before discharge from the plant, contaminated water can be either treated on-site by the Wrtsil oily water treatment (OWT) unit or transported for proper treatment. In areas that are subject to stringent effluent limits, biological treatment might also be required. Wrtsil Senitec Biosys is a biological treatment system for grey water, treated oily water and/or similar effluents from power plants.
