Logan-Magnolia Community School District

1200 North Second Avenue Logan, IA. 51546 www.lomaschools.org Hello! Welcome back to another exciting school year. The Relentlessly pursuing math department has composed this letter to inform you of educational excellence some changes going on this year in the math program here at for the 21st Century Logan-Magnolia. None of our teachers have changed in the department; however, what we are teaching has changed slightly. Mr. Azinger will now teach 7th grade, Algebra Concepts, Geometry Concepts, Problem Solving, and Consumer Math. Ms. Lacey will now teach 8th grade, Pre-Algebra and Algebra. Ms. Tentinger will be teaching Geometry, Algebra II, Discrete and Probability and Statistics. Mr. Marsh will continue to teach the following upper level course: College Algebra, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, Calculus, and College Physics. We just wanted to introduce ourselves and give you some information regarding the expectations in the high school classes. Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, the High School Math Department and the Administration will be enforcing the prerequisite grade. According to the course descriptions a student must pass each math class with a C- or higher to move to the next level of math. What this means is that your student needs to get a C- in order to continue to the next class. If your student receives an F, they do not get credit and they do not move on to the next course regardless. If your student receives a D+, D, or D- they will receive math credit, BUT they will not be allowed to take the next course in the series. If your student retakes the class because they earned a grade of D-, D, or D+ they will receive an elective credit and not another math credit. We have adopted a new math series that is based on the Iowa Core Curriculum, which is now the state of Iowas required math curriculum. If you would like to view the criteria please go to the Iowa Department of Education and search Iowa Core Math Standards. The Iowa Core is intended to help students be able to apply what they have learned outside the classroom. In order for us to tie in the application piece of learning, they need to practice the basics outside of class and that is what the homework is about. Students will have homework almost every night. Our expectation is they attempt every problem and if they have questions, we prefer they come before or after school to get extra help. We are more than willing to help during class when they are given the time to work on their homework after the lesson, but sometimes they may need a little more help. We have attached the high school grading scale down below so that you are aware of what it is. If your student decides to not complete the homework or is struggling to understand the material they may be required to stay after school with their teacher to work on their assignments at study tables. If they continue to not turn in their homework, they will be considered Academically Noncompliant and may become ineligible to participate in after school activities until the homework is completed, as stated in the student handbook.

Academic Noncompliance Students are expected to perform their academic duties. If a student chooses not to do their homework, assignments, projects, or other items as assigned they will be classified as academic noncompliant. When a teacher classifies a student as academic noncompliant, the student shall be issued detention(s) until they are compliant. If a student is habitually noncompliant a plan shall be initiated to help the student become compliant. Part of this plan may include temporary removal from extracurricular activities, extra time spent before or after school or Saturday inschool suspensions. If a student refuses to participate in the plan, they may face disciplinary action. We understand that with all of these changes that there will be many questions. As questions arise, you may contact any one of us or the guidance counselor. Thank you for your time and we hope to a great 2012-2013 school year! Sincerely, Mr. Azinger
