Notes from the Gates to Happiness By Shaykh Sayyid Muhammad `Alawi al-Maliki al-Hassani

Du`a (Supplication) Supplication is from the greatest of the gates to happiness. Supplication is always answered if not in the way you would like, then Allah will prevent an evil from coming upon you equal to your supplication or save your supplication until the Day of Reckoning. From the manners of supplication: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Facing the qibla the Ka`bah in Makkah al-Mukaramah. Raising the hands so much so that the armpits are visible. Having a very quiet volume of voice. Wiping the face after the supplication. Fear of Allah during the supplication. Sincere repentance to Allah in ones internal state. Aspiration of Allah answering the supplication. Praising Allah at the beginning of the supplication using for example the words al-Hamdulilah (praise be to Allah). 9. Sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet (Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallim) before and after the supplication using for example the words Jaz Allahu `Anna Sayyidina Muhammadan Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Aleehi wa Sallim Amahu wa Ahluh (may Allah reward our Master Muhammad may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family a reward befitting to him).

Supplication is the best tool for relieving stress, anxiety, and depression. Whoever holds to it regularly is always happy. Allah will replace the anxiety and depression of those who recite the following supplication with ease and relaxation: Allhumma 'innee `abduka, wabnu `abdika, wabnu 'amatika, nasiyatee biyadika, mdhin fiyya hukmuka, `adlun fiyya qadh'uka, 'as'aluka bikulli 'ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, 'aw 'anzaltahu fee kitbika, 'aw `allamtahu 'ahadan min khalqika, 'aw 'ista'tharta bihi fee `ilmil ghaybi `indaka, 'an taj`alal qur'na rabee`a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jal'a huznee, wa thahba hammee, O Allah, I am your bondservant, son of your bondsman, and son of your bondswoman. My forelock is in Your Hands; Your judgement is continuously being carried out upon me; Your sentence upon me is just. I ask You with every name that is Yours, with which You have named Yourself, brought down in Your book, taught to one of Your creation, or have preferred for Yourself in the hidden knowledge, with You: that You make the Qur'n the spring of my heart, and the

light of my chest, and the despellation of my sadness, and deportation of my [preoccupying] concern. Say La Illaha Il Allah before and after every single action and say La Illaha Il Allah Yabqa wa Yakfnee kulli shay for no sadness or worry. If you are in a hard situation it is following in the example of the Prophet (Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallim) to wipe your face saying Hasbi Allah wa Ni`mal Wakil. Imam al-Shadhili recommended saying: Subhanallah wa bihamdihi Subhan Allah al-`Azeem! Allahumma thabit qalbi wa ghfirli dhanbi wal mumineen wal muminat La Hawla wa La Quwattah Illa Billah Whoever increases in gifts let him increase in praising Allah saying alHamdulilah Whoever increases in sins let him increase in asking forgiveness from Allah saying Astaghfirallah. Whoever decreases in money let him increase in saying La Hawla wa La Quwwatah Illa Billah. Whoever says La Hawla wa la-Quwattalh Billahil `Aleeul `Azeem 100 times a day will never have poverty ever. Wealth and Good in the Dunya Whoever reads Surat al-Waqi`ah every night will never have poverty it is the chapter of wealth. When Fajr comes say Subhan Allah wa Bihamdihi Subhan Allah al-`Azeem wa Astaghfirallah 100 times. If the world has given you its back you will have even more than what you wanted if Allah wills. When entering the house read Surat al-Ikhlas and no poverty will come upon your house if Allah wills. Read La Illaha Il Allah al-Malik al-Haqq al-Mubin 100 times a day and you will have safety from poverty and punishment of the grave. Saying Bismillahir Rahman al-Raheem wa La Hawla wa La Quwattah illa billahil `Aleeul `Azeem 10 times forgives you all minor sins and protects you from 70 calamites if Allah wills.

Protection Against the Eye of Jealousy For protection against the eye of jealousy read Surat al-Falaq, Surat al-Nas, Ayat al-Kursi, and the following supplications: Authubikalimat illahi tammati min kulli shaytanin wa kulli hammah wa kulli `aynin lammah. Bismillahi Yubreek wa min Kulli dain yushfeek wa la min sharri kulli hasidan iaza hassad wa min sharri kulli dhil `ayn. La Illaha Il Allah Abu Dharr asked the Prophet (Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallim) which dead got him closer to the Garden and further from the hellfire. The Prophet (Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallim) told him that if you do a bad deed to do a good one and it will count as 10 good deeds. Abu Dharr asked if saying La Illaha Il Allah was a good deed. The Prophet (Sal Allahu `Alayhi wa Sallim) replied saying It is the best of good deeds. It forgives sins and renews faith. There is no veil between it and Allah! It is heavier than the heavens and the earth in the balance! It was sent to each and every Prophet! It is the most beloved of words to Allah! The best of deeds! It is a protector from the punishment of the grave! It preserves your faith and protects you. It brings you in nearness to Allah. It is the best of dhikr (remembrances of Allah). He who keeps on it has no punishments. It preserves you and is your stronger arm. All success and blessing is with it. It is a medicine and strength. It gives piety and a light. It gives a healing for the hearts. It is a gift from Allah. Reading the Quran It expands the breast and calms worries. It stops all sadness and gives the heart happiness. It is the invitation of Allah, the rope of Allah and success to he who listens to it. Every letter is rewarded tenfold. It is the best worship of the Ummah (Islamic nation). Increase in reading it according to your ability! Reading it in Prayer (Salat) is a treasure from the Garden. It will intercede for its people, it is a light for its people, the angels witness it, and it is great good! It is the purifier of the heart, and benefits yourself and your parents and gives you no fear on the Day of Judgement. Basmala The basmala protects one from drowning if said in the ocean, and from burning if said on the fire, and of all bad situations if said in sincerity. If a person says the

basmala before doing each and every single thing he will not be pained by the death pangs nor with the punishment of the grave. Surat al-Fatiha The fatiha cures every sickness and is the best chapter of the entire Quran. It is success and it is thankfulness to Allah. It protects you from the fire of the hellfire. It is good to read it 7 times with Basmala regularly after every prayer. Ayat al-Kursi The best verse of the entire Quran. It is the verse of victory, the verse of blessings, and the verse of holiness. If read during worry worry ceases. Asking from Allah Saying La Illaha Il Allah al-___________________ (Putting in one of Asma Allah al-Husna) will help you in many ways. For example: La Illaha Il Allah al-Wadud will increase you in Allahs love if Allah wills. Surat Yaseen Reading it once gives the reward of reading the Quran 10 times. Reading it gives ease in the day and in night and washes away sadness. The Awliyah (friends of Allah) read it regularly. It is the heart of the Quran. Surat al-Mulk Reading it at sleep is extremely beneficial. It intercedes for its reader on the Day of Reckoning. There will be no punishment of the grave for he who reads it every night. Whoever makes it is habit to read has received all good. Surat al-Ikhlas It is 1/3rd of the Quran in its meaning and in its reward. According to some weaker narrations reading it 100,000 times will keep one away from the hellfire. Reading it 50 times a day will forgive one for all of his minor sins if Allah wills.
