EDITORIAL
City and CRD go head to head on,fire protection
The year is ending on a very sour Dote in the relationship between the City of Williams Lake and Cariboo Regional District. ' In what only could be described as a shocking move, the City reneged on its handshake deal (a letter actually) with the CRD at the 11rh hour to offer fire protection services for Williams Lake fringe area residents come 2013. The written offer was the foundation for the November Williams Lake Fringe Fire Protection Referendum held on November 24, 2012. It has left CRD staff and more than a 1,000 residents to wonder whether they're going to have fire protection come Dec. 31. What a way to go into the holidays. , And, perhaps more importantly, what does it say about a' person, business or City who doesn't honour their deals? Trouble seems to have been brewing at City Hall for a while now. It's hard to say who's running the show when it comes to these kind of decisions and certainly no one is stepping forward to explain this latest move. Could it be that the City is looking for someone to help make up the tax revenue lost as a result of the Creekside closure?' Only they know? Whatever the motive, the fall out for this move could be huge, ' Let's face it, these aren't Kamloops residents the City is treating like second-class citizens, These people are from our community. They are our friends, family and neighbours living at The 50 and Dog Creek Road. These people work and play in the City, And if that's not enough, what about angering your closest business ally? The City arid the CRD sit at many tables together - they (un the pool together for Heaven's sake. Rightfully so, the CaribooRegional District has applied for a legal injunction to require the City to honour its pre-referendum offer to provide fire protection, , When it reneged the City had come back with a cheesy, one year, maximum rate of $147 per $100,000 assessed value offer. Yet earlier this year, the City admitted that they had been over charging the fringe residents for a while now, saying they had "paid rnore than their fair share," We didnit see the residents asking for a refund on the downpayment they made on the City's flashy fire hall during those years. Yes, for a City that says it's open for business, this is certainly one more sign to suggest otherwise, See Page 3 for updated results.
