SCOPE This specification covers requirements of stationery Vented type lead acid storage battery, complete with battery racks, inter-cell and inter-tier connectors and all other accessories. This specification is applicable for both single cell and multicell block batteries. In case of conflict between any section or clause of this specification and Data Sheet-A, the requirements of Data Sheet-A shall govern. CODES & STANDARDS The design, manufacture and performance of equipment shall confirm to the latest applicable electrical rules,all currently applicable standards codes of practice indicated in data sheet A2, regulations and safety codes of the locality where the equipment are to be installed. In case of conflict between these standards and specification, requirements of this specification shall govern. Nothing in this specification shall be construed to relieve the CONTRACTOR of his responsibility. All codes and standards referred to in the specification shall be understood to be the latest version on the date of offer made by the bidder unless otherwise indicated. The CONTRACTOR shall ensure that instruments and gauges to be used for testing and inspection of critical parameters as identified in the specification have valid calibration and the accuracy can be traced to National standards. FEATURES OF CONSTRUCTION GENERAL The equipment offered shall be complete with all parts that are necessary or usual for the efficient operation of the equipment, whether specifically mentioned or not.

PLATES

3.2.1 Tubular Positive Plates The tubular positive plate shall consist of a suitable bar with spines cast of suitably alloyed lead to give adequate mechanical strength. Porous, acid resistant and oxidation resistant tubes shall be inserted one over each spine. After insertion, the tubes shall be adequately filled and packed with active material before their lower ends are closed by a common bar. The construction TCE FORM 329 R3

and material of the tubes shall be such as to reduce loss of active material and to withstand normal internal stresses developed during service. 3.2.2 Negative plates The negative plates shall normally be of the box type. End negative plates, if of box type may be of the half pasted type. Pasted plates shall have adequate mechanical strength and shall be so designed that the active material is maintained in intimate contact with the grid under normal working conditions. 3.3 TERMINAL POSTS Terminal posts shall be designed to accommodate external bolted connection conveniently and positively. Each terminal post shall have two bolt holes of the same diameter, preferably at right angles to each other. The bottom hole shall be used to terminate the inter-cell connection. The top hole shall be left for PURCHASERS terminal connections. All the metal parts of the terminals shall be of lead or lead coated type. Bolts, heads and nuts, except seal nuts, shall be hexagonal and shall be lead covered. The junction between terminal posts and cover, and between cover and container shall be so sealed as to prevent any seepage of electrolyte. 3.4 3.5 Unless other wise specified the container material shall be as per Data sheet-A Containers, cell lids, vent plugs, acid level indicators, separators, connectors, electrolyte, water, shall conform to the relevant IS/IEC standards. The cell containers and vent plugs, in addition, shall conform to the safety requirements of UL 924 or equivalent safety standard. In case the batteries are proposed to be housed in a sheet metal or polymeric enclosure, the same is deemed to be included in the scope of the bidder. The enclosure for battery shall conform to the safety provisions of UL 1778 or equivalent standard. ACCESSORIES The battery shall be complete with accessories and devices, including but not limited to the following: i) ii) iii) iv) Battery racks Porcelain insulators, rubber pads etc. Set of inter-cell, inter-tier and inter-bank connectors as required for the complete installation. Electrolyte for first filling + 10% extra.

Accessories for testing and maintenance. BATTERY LAYOUT The bidder shall review the battery room dimensions/layout drawings included with the tender specifications and suggest suitable battery layout, providing dimensioned drawings. BATTERY RACKS Battery racks shall be constructed from good quality teak wood and painted with two coats of approved acid resisting paint. The construction of the racks, unless otherwise mentioned in Data Sheet-A, shall be suitable for fixing to a flat concrete floor. The racks shall be rigid, mechanically strong, free standing type and free from warp and twist. The completed racks shall be suitable for being bolted end to end to form continuous row.

VENTILATION The BIDDERS shall indicate in the tender, requirements of ventilation in the battery room.

6.0

BATTERY SIZING The details of AH rating and no. of cells in the battery provided in Data Sheet-A is the min. to be offered. The BIDDER shall guarantee the performance of the battery for the duty requirements indicated over the entire range of temperature and also at the min. ambient temperature indicated in Data Sheet - A with the applicable derating factors. Ageing factor and the procedure for sizing the battery shall be as detailed in IEEE 485. Design margin to be considered has been specified in Data Sheet A. BIDDER shall demonstrate the performance of the battery at the specified duty cycle, at the specified min. ambient temperature during pre-dispatch inspection, if requested. To meet the above, if higher AH rating is required the same shall be offered by the BIDDER. Also higher no of cells if required shall be forced to meet the minimum voltage limit of the Battery bank under end cell voltage conditions.

CHARGING The proposed method of charging the battery is indicated in the Data Sheet-A. BIDDER shall state whether an equalising charge is recommended for the battery. If so, the equalising charging voltage, current, duration and the interval between the equalising charging shall be specified in Data-Sheet-B. BIDDER shall also indicate the requirements for boost charging the battery in 8 hours time (rapid charging), in addition to normal charging as per bidders standard. LIFE The BIDDER shall quote in his offer the guaranteed life of the battery when operating under the conditions specified.

Performed at site after installation and commissioning of the battery

All tests shall be witnessed by the PURCHASERS representative. Details of tests to be performed are given below. 9.2 TYPE TESTS

9.2.1 Type tests shall comprise of the following: i) ii) iii) iv) v) vi) vii) Visual inspection Dimensional check Capacity test Retention of charge test Ampere-hour and watt- hour efficiency tests Endurance test. Short circuit current and Internal resistance measurement test as per IEC 60896-1.

9.2.2 In addition, the bidder should have conducted test of suitability for floating battery operation in accordance with IEC 896-1 at a recognised independent laboratory and shall furnish a copy of the test report along with the bid for purchasers review, if the battery specified is for floating operation. 9.2.3 In applications where the first momentary discharge stated in Data sheet-A is high and lasts for several minutes a high discharge test shall be conducted, in addition to the above tests. 9.2.4 Type tests shall be conducted on a minimum of one sample cell typical and identical with the cells forming the complete battery offered. However, the test cell shall not be one of the cells offered in the battery being supplied. 9.3 ACCEPTANCE TESTS Acceptance tests shall be conducted at site on completion of installation and commissioning and immediately prior to putting the battery in service. These tests shall comprise of : i) ii) iii) iv) Visual inspection Dimensional check Capacity test Test for voltage during discharge

The vendor shall ensure that instruments and gauges to be used for testing and inspection of critical parameters as identified in the specification have valid calibration and the accuracy can be traced to National/International standards.. TEST REPORTS A preliminary copy of type test results shall be submitted for approval before the dispatch of batteries. Specified number of bound copies of complete test results shall be furnished with the batteries.

SPARE PARTS BIDDER shall include the following items in his recommended list of spares along with item wise unit prices: i) ii) iii) iv) v) Inter-cell / Inter-row/ Inter-bank / connectors Battery stand insulators and cell insulators. Nuts, bolts , washers etc. Vent plugs/ Vent plugs cum level indicators Complete set of spare cell ( in dry charged condition) without electrolyte.

IDENTIFICATION Each cell shall be marked in a permanent manner in accordance with relevant standard.

12.0

CO-ORDINATION WITH BATTERY CHARGER VENDOR When battery charger is procured separately, the VENDOR shall co-ordinate with battery charger VENDOR with regard to layout, connections, charging voltage requirements etc.

13.0

TRANSPORT The battery shall be transported without acid in preferably dry charged condition. The acid shall be supplied separately in non- returnable containers. The packing shall fully confirm to the prevalent safety and environment norms at the place of use.

The BIDDER shall furnish a write up on methods to be followed for disposing the waste electrolyte and scrapped battery to meet the stipulations of the prevalent environment norms at the place of use.
