THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH

MINISTRY SCHEDULES
FAITH AT THE CENTER OF THE FAMILY
he message that comes from the Holy Family is first of all a message of faith: the family of Nazareth is a home which truly centers on God. For Mary and Joseph, this choice of faith becomes concrete in their service to the Son of God entrusted to their care, but it is also expressed in their mutual love, rich in spiritual tenderness and fidelity. With their life, they teach that marriage is a covenant between man and woman, a covenant that involves reciprocal fidelity and rests upon their common trust in God. Such a noble, profound and definitive covenant, as to constitute for believers the sacrament of love of Christ and of the Church. The spouses fidelity stands like a solid rock on which the childrens trust rests. When parents and children together breathe this atmosphere of faith they have a ready energy that enables them to face even difficult trials, as the Holy Familys experience shows.

A REAL-WORLD FAMILY OF LOVE

When his parents saw him (in the Temple) they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Fathers house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, at times my family can seem pretty dysfunctional. Yet, I know no family is without problems. Your family, too, had challenges to face. Be with my family, however spread out we may be and wherever we may be on our own faith journeys. Help us to recognize that we will be able to face the challenges that confront us only if we put you at the center of our lives.

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to pray with your family, look through a family photo album and pray for your family members, living and deceased.

The Feast of the Holy Family

by Marcellino DAmbrosio, Ph.D.
Every year right after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. There is a reason for this. Its easy to think the incarnation means God took on a human body. But there is much more to it than that. In Jesus, God unites himself to an entire human nature. He fully enters into human experience, with all its peaks and valleys. And a part of that human experience, with more than its share of peaks and valleys, is family. Jesus spent over 90% of his years in the obscure nitty-gritty of family life. Though only a few chapters are devoted to this lengthy period, what they reveal is significant. First of all, despite the cuddly image of our nativity scenes, the original Christmas was anything but cozy. A woman nine months pregnant rides 75 miles on the back of a donkey over bumpy, dusty roads so she can have her baby in a stable full of dirty, smelly animals. Quickly after the birth they have to pick up and flee for their lives, seeking asylum in a foreign land. A few years later, the now adolescent son goes missing for several days, and there ensues a conversation characterized by no little emotion. Joseph is a saint, Mary is without sin, Jesus is God incarnate, yet there are still challenges, difficulties, tense moments, and opportunities for misunderstanding. Welcome to real family life. All things created by God are good, with human beings and human life very good according to Genesis chapter 1. Yet in assuming a human body, the Divine Word elevated its dignity, sanctifying it, and ennobling it. In accepting baptism from his cousin John, Jesus sanctifies water and, in baptism, makes it an instrument of his sanctifying power. In entering into family life, Jesus does the same. The family, up until now naturally good, becomes an instrument of sanctification and growth in holiness. As a teen, I thought a serious pursuit of holiness required opting out of marriage to enter a monastery. Holiness was about lots of quiet prayer and apostolic work. Noisy family life was a distraction to all this. The role of married folks was limited to getting to Mass and the sacraments, obeying the 10 commandments, and getting into heaven after a stay in Purgatory. The feast of the Holy Family reminds us, as Vatican II teaches, that all human beings are called to the heights of holiness. That all states in life, including student, teenager, and parent, offer abundant opportunities to grow in faith, hope, and love. That the nitty gritty of family life, if approached right, can be a road to profound personal transformation and communion with God. Think about it. The creator of the universe spent most of his human life as a craftsman, working with dad in the family business and ultimately taking it over. Mary, the holiest of all creatures, spent most of her time changing diapers, cooking, and cleaning. The secret to holiness is not to do extraordinary things, but to do ordinary things with extraordinary love and gratitude (Col 3:15-17). The word seminary means seedbed. It is a greenhouse where, in a sheltered environment, vocations can develop till they can not just survive in the real world, but bear fruit there. The family is the original seminary. In its soil is sown the call to share in Christs holiness and mission. Ironically, tending to the seedlings causes the parent/gardeners to grow as well. So family, in Gods plan, is a community where everyone has growing to do. Maybe thats why Col 3 talks so much about forgiveness and forbearance! The bottom line is this we dont become holy despite the hustle-bustle of family life, but in and through it. Dr. Marcellino DAmbrosio studied under Avery Cardinal Dulles for his Ph.D. in historical theology and taught for many years at the University of Dallas. He now directs www.crossroadsinitiative.com.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH

A Few Prayers for Family Life

Dear Lord, with Mary and Joseph, you have lived within a family; teach me always to appreciate the precious gift of being part of a family. Show me ever new ways to protect and comfort those closest to me, and let me, each day, do something that will say I love you without speaking the words. But remind me also to frequently say those words. Let me never part from any member of my family in anger. Prompt me always to turn back without delay - to forgive, and be forgiven. And let me see your image within each person in my own family, and in my greater family, knowing that in your Kingdom, we will truly be one family, united by your sacrifice on the cross. Amen.

God made us a family. We need and help one another, we love one another, we forgive one another. We live and work together, we play together, we pray and worship together. Together we use Gods word, together we follow and grow in Jesus Christ, together we love all men and women, together we serve God the Father, together we help one another live holy lives so that we may get to heaven. Help us, O God, through the intercession of Your Son, Jesus Christ, that we may imitate Your Holy Family. Amen.

Lord God, from you every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. Father, you are Love and Life. Through your Son, Jesus Christ, born of woman, and through the Holy Spirit, fountain of divine charity, grant that every family on earth may become for each successive generation a true shrine of life and love. Grant that your grace may guide the thoughts and actions of husbands and wives for the good of their families and of all the families in the world. Grant that the young may find in the family solid support for their human dignity and for their growth in truth and love. Grant that love, strengthened by the grace of the sacrament of marriage, may prove mightier than all the weakness and trials through which our families sometimes pass. Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that the Church may fruitfully carry out her worldwide mission in the family and through the family. Through Christ our Lord, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life for ever and ever. Amen.
