At this point in the lesson, students will be sitting together as a group in front of the SmartBoard. Mrs. Walker will have already explained the assignment and each student will have already chosen their individual to research. Print resources will be made available for students to peruse. This guided practice will continue after the discussion on Boolean operators and logic. I will show students how they can find the online databases on their school librarys webpage. For purposes of the guided practice, we will use the ResearchBETA search engine from http://www.easybib.com I will use a topic such as cats and dogs. After calling on various students to volunteer and step up to the SmartBoard, these students will search for information on cats and dogs in different ways. What is the difference between: Cat Dog Cat Dog Cat AND Dog Cat OR Dog Cat NOT Dog Dog NOT Cat There will be a brief discussion on the differences and how to find information using the various techniques.

Independent Practice

After the guided practice, students will instructed to either use a computer or a laptop, depending on which is available. The computers are located in the library and several extra laptops will be brought via cart in case more are necessary. This time the students will use their own topics for practice, such as Hilary Clinton. They will still use the ResearchBETA function from http://www.easybib.com. The students will search for the individual in different ways (from the list below and from what they did during the guided practice). What is the difference between these searches, for example: Hilary Clinton Hilary Clinton Hilary Clinton Bill Clinton Hilary Clinton AND Bill Clinton Hilary Clinton OR Bill Clinton

I will encourage students to try looking beyond the name, but for other information, depending on what information they need. This includes, for example: Hilary Clinton NOT College years Hilary Clinton AND Secretary of State Hilary Clinton NOT Senator Secretary of State NOT Hilary Clinton [By changing the order, how does it change the information retrieved?] There will be a brief discussion on the differences and how to find information using the various techniques. Reflection and Sharing Before the end of class, students will reflect on their experience from their notes on their tip sheet. This includes what different kinds of information they found based on the different searches. They will also be able to share what they learned during their evaluations after their presentation. In the evaluation and reflection stage, students will be encouraged to explain whether this lesson helped them find the information they needed on their chosen individual or how the lesson could have been improved. Extended Learning: Students spend time in the library for research using the appropriate databases and other digital and print resources available to them. The library will be open during the activity period and after-school hours in order for students to practice and/or work in smaller groups as well as individually with the librarian.
