Welcome!
We are a congregation doing our best to live out Christs commandment to be a disciple-making church. In this catalogue you will find multiple opportunities for growing and maturing in your discipleship. New Sunday Morning Classes We begin a new series of Sunday morning short-term discipleship classes (4-9 weeks in length) designed to complement the ongoing, existing Sunday School classes. They provide multiple entry points, short-term commitments, and a wide variety of teaching models and styles for learning (lecture, discussion, small groups). The primary audience is folks who do not attend a traditional Sunday School class. If you are not now in a Sunday School class, consider participating in one of these new options. A variety of other opportunities for deepening discipleship are also listed. For more information about any of our offerings, contact the adult education office at:

Educational Travel

May 6-8, 2013 Reformed Heritage Tour


France, Switzerland, Austria & Hungary Join us for an exciting educational travel experience as we travel to France, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, following the footsteps of John Calvin and exploring our Reformation roots as Presbyterians. In France we will visit Paris, Noyon, and Le Chambon, all part of Calvins personal history. In Geneva well explore the city he founded on presbyterian principles. Well stop in beautiful Salzburg, Austria, on the way to Hungary where we will see Debrecen, Sarospatak, and Budapest, places that kept the Reformed faith alive through terrible persecution. This trip is sponsored by Myers Park Presbyterian and Union Presbyterian Seminary and was customdesigned for us. Bible Studies
Weekly Studies Men Tuesday mornings, 7:15-8:15 am Rev. Von Clemans This gathering of men has been meeting for over eight years. Join us as we make our way through the Scriptures, usually alternating between Old and New Testament books. Beginning Jan. 8 well continue our study of Job. Beginning Feb. 10 we will begin a new study of the Gospel of John Women Thursdays, 11 a.m.-12 noon Rev. Dr. Millie Snyder Share with women of all ages as you gather around ancient words and explore how they speak to us today. Beginning Jan. 10, study the book of Daniel, an obscure and often difficult book but one with significant impact on the New Testament.

ACTS (Adults Caring Through Scripture), B-205 Explore faith journeys, scripture, social issues and Christianity through guest speakers and engaging dialogue with this diverse group of people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Faithfulness in Daily Life, B-203 Take part in this open forum for 4080-year-olds as we discuss a wide range of topics from theology and ethics to biblical applications for daily life. Feasting on the Word, Chapel B-105 Find out what life in Christ means and why it matters. This lectionarybased Bible study, led by Rev. Dr. Millie Snyder, is designed to enrich your discipleship and deepen your understanding of God's word. Fellowship, B-208 Gain a deeper understanding of faith and its impact on daily life in this class of baby boomers. The group of 5060-year-olds invites outside speakers and clergy to teach. Time is set aside for service and fellowship. Sparking Faith Parent Class, D-101 Explore the same stories your children are learning in Sunday School in this special class for parents of 3-year-old through fifth-grade children. MPACT (Myers Park Active Christians Today), B-204 Learn to live your faith through Bible study and the exploration of contemporary social issues. This class knows no age limit and enjoys the fellowship and support of one another. Rhodes-Johnston, B-006 (Panel Room) Find out why men and women of all ages take part in this Bible study taught by Union Presbyterian Seminary professor, Rev. Dr. Richard Boyce. The class curriculum is The Present Word, a six-year cycle through the whole Bible. Trinity, B-201 Join adults in their late 20s to mid 40s, single and married, with and without children, in this class that features Bible studies, small groups, socials and discipleship opportunities.

Wednesday Discipleship Classes


Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17, 8-9 p.m. (ish) Theology on Tap @ Providence Road Sundries Join us for a (very) informal conversation about theological issues as we enjoy fellowship and beverages together. Seekers and sages are welcome. There will be a light structure to reign in enthusiastic theologians. All questions and issues are on the table. Answers will be sought, though seldom secured. Weekly attendance is encouraged but not required, so drop in when you can.

Wednesday Discipleship Classes


Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 23, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Invitation to Romans Rev. Von Clemans Explore how people have interpreted Romans throughout the ages. Compare Pauls writings in Romans to what theologians like Augustine, Luther and Calvin have to say about Paul in their time. You will have a more informed commitment to Pauls radical vision of Gods relationship to both Christians and Jews and to their relationship to each other, thanks to the "love of God in Christ Jesus." Weekly video segments present the text and scholars share snapshot views of how Romans has been read through history. This study is meaty and extremely enjoyable for those students who have some familiarity with Romans and have a strong biblical foundation to rely on. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Beginning Jan. 20, four weeks Getting to Know the Real Jesus Rev. Dr. Steve Eason Using the four Gospels we will explore who Jesus was in contrast to who we may make him out to be. Consider this a character study. A deeper understanding of his culture, his message, his actions and his ways may help us to know better this one whom we claim to follow. Jumpstarting Your Life Dr. Sara Rose Starting a new year is a great time to refocus on what lies ahead. Whatever this past year has been for you, Dr. Rose will provide you with tools and perspectives for setting a new course and accomplishing your goals. Sara Rose is a clinical psychologist, Stephen Minister and member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

Beginning Jan. 20, nine weeks Belonging to God: Building Community Wayne Felton Join new members and seasoned members in this intentional experience of building community. In a setting of multiple small groups you will study the book of Acts, learn about community in the early church, and share and pray together as you make and strengthen new church friendships. Wayne Felton is a Stephen Ministry trainer, deacon, and member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

Wednesday Discipleship Classes


Beginning January 16 (ongoing) Noon Pastors Uptown Bible Study: The Parables of Jesus Rev. Dr. Steve Eason, Rev. Dr. Millie Snyder, Rev. Von Clemans Take a break from your stressful day and join one of our pastors in interpreting and applying the parables of Jesus to our daily lives. Steve Eason starts the series and other pastors join in later. All you need is a Bible, your lunch and an hour of your time. Registration is required so we can provide details of specific locations and parking which may change over time. Also, some locations have limited capacity and require a security pass. If you work uptown, join this community of learning, fellowship and Bible study.

Bibles and Babies Led by a team of parent facilitators Parents are invited to bring their infants, study the Bible and share the challenges of parenting. Begin to fulfill your Baptism promises to teach your children the faith as your nurture your own in this supportive community.

Beginning Feb. 17, five weeks Toxic Charity Rev. Dr. Bob Breed Explore the changing paradigm of church mission work through Bob Luptons book, Toxic Charity. Churches and charities have fallen into the bad habit of creating programs to help the poor when in reality the only people they are helping are themselves, creating a toxic charity that needs to be reexamined and fixed. Join the discussion of how well-intentioned individuals are actually hurting the very people theyre trying to help. The poor end up feeling judged, looked down upon, and incapable of anything but charity and handouts. They end up becoming more dependent instead of learning skills to help themselves. Explore a healthier model the poor are treated as business partners, empowering them to start businesses, build houses, plan communities, etc. ways that truly help. Beginning Jan. 20, nine weeks The Bible from Scratch (New Testament) Rev. Von Clemans Designed for beginners or folks wanting a big picture overview of the Bible and its study, this class will introduce you to the New Testament as sacred literature, explore the content of each of the gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the remaining letters, and the book of Revelation all preparing you to be a better student of the Scriptures. Beginning Feb. 17, five weeks Enriching Your Marriage Presbyterian Samaritan Counseling Center staff Every marriage can benefit from intentional attention to healthy relationships. Participants will use the PrepareEnrich"Couples Assessment, an online survey which gives feedback to couples on 12 different areas of their relationship. Supported by information provided about the strengths and the possible growth areas of their relationships, couples will be guided through activities intended to teach skills that serve to enrich their relationships. These activities will explore the areas of communication, conflict resolution, personality, families and parenting, finances, spirituality and sexuality. The cost of the required survey is $35 and more information about it can be found at www.prepare-enrich.com. Both spouses from basically healthy marriages are encouraged to attend the series. Rev. Beginning Feb. 17, five weeks Following Jesus, Being With the Poor Rev. Dr. Paul Hanneman How do you become more Christian when you already are one? How do you respond more fully to Christs call to Follow meto move beyond believer-ship to discipleship? Building on the experience and wisdom of the Church of the Saviour in Washington, D.C., well explore the servant leader model of discipleship and focus on two of that models core areas of concentration: being with the poor and call. 1. Redefining discipleship as following Jesus 2. Servant leader model of discipleship 3. Being with the poor as a spiritual discipline for followers 4.
