of the entire black community in the United States of America. Her one action ignited a revolution that left its imprint on American history. As noted by Martin Luther King, Our lives begin to end the day we become silent a bout things that matter. Silence is a virtue that backfires on some occasions, es pecially in relation to public policy.So, there is hope. Light only comes after the darkest days and a great leader only surfaces when the nation direly needs h is guidance. Herein, lies a lesson or two for our beleaguered masses, poor souls who have lost all hope of being citizens of a nation that thr ives on anything but extremism. Return of lasting p eace in South Asia, especially in relation to India and Pakistan, is possible on ly if the leaderships of both countries put the past in the past and avoid condi tions that could possibly lead to conflicts. Where there is a will there is a wa y. If both countries resolve to find a way forward and learn from past mistakes, there should be no reason that peace cannot be persuaded to return. Jaswant Sin gh may like to consider that what made peace abandon us in South Asia in the fir st place was the absence of positive thinking, a spirit of cooperation and feeli ngs for others. This task involves accepting the reality of partition, recognisi ng the ideology of Pakistan and existence of Hindus and Muslims as separate enti ties with distinct cultures and way of life. Tolerance, patience and cooperation are the necessary ingredients of peace. As Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah put it, Pakistan is a moral and intellectual achievement. Pakistan is now a fait accompli. A Pakistans problems are in Pakistans DNA. The moment you are looking for purity a nd a pure theocratic state, then you get your theocratic state, but what you dont get is the definition of purity. So, which Muslim is purer? I am holier than tho u! And therefore the Shia is impure, you have to destroy Shias, you have to destr oy Bengalis because each one does not fit into your model. And as the elite of Pu njab or the Frontier, I decide what is pure. And so these low-level Bengalis are not proper Muslims! You take Bangladesh. Bengali Muslims did not get their land after a struggle with Hindus. They got it by a struggle with fellow Muslims. Many educated Europeans believed that reason was a better guide than faith or tr adition. This belief led to the Enlightenment.
