Krkonoe Mountains
the best of Czech mountains
The Krkonoe Mountains are suitable for:
The Krkonoe Mountains are the highest Czech mountain range. From every corner of the foothills even from a birds eye view, the Krkonoe Mountains panorama is magnificent. The tops are unmistakable; it seems that each mountain has its own face clearly distinguishable even by an occasional visitor. The border mountain range is distinct, here and there with rocks having poetic names (Dv, Musk, ensk kameny Girls, Men, Women Stones), otherwise the tops are bare, covered with grass and meadows with wild flowers. In some places, the mountain crests fall down the valleys (Snn jmy, Labsk dl) completing the dramatic picture of the landscape.

The deep forests of the Czech-Bavarian border area, the wild mountain creeks, lakes and moors, blooming slopes and pastures. The countryside of Poumav is poetic and soothing. A constant element of the umava countryside is water. The extensive recreational zone around Lipno lake hosts thousands of visitors every summer, from families with children to lovers of windsurfing and yachting. Anyone interested in sport will find a real paradise in umava. A great number of natural and historical monuments have been made accessible thanks to a dense network of cycle paths. In the past, the communications network used for the purpose of the frontier protection was passable only by military vehicles. Now, the narrow but high-quality paths are available to cyclists. The most popular paths are found in the surroundings of Horsk Kvilda, towards the Vltava river source and in the region of Kapersk Hory. For tourists whose physical condition is not perfect, there is the area of umava plains with a minimum amount of elevation changes.

The hills of the Orlick Mountains are unpretentious, mild, and covered with woods and pastures. This region seems to resist the ravages of time and to these days has preserved its simple, folk character. The Jirskova path, which is named after the Czech classical author, extends over the entire crest of the mountains. Whichever part thereof you visit, you will find one specificity, which is rarely found to this extent somewhere else in the world the pre-war fortification system on the Czech border. In the deciduous woods, there are small bunkers or larger fortresses hidden almost every kilometer, which were built shortly prior to 1938 for the purpose of defence of the Czechoslovak Republic. The fortresses were never used in the World War II. However, they have been preserved to this day as a silent memento of the turbulent times, nowadays maintained by volunteers or changed into museums.

This is one of the largest underground fortresses located near Rokytnice in the Orlick Mountains. Its surface represents a unique set of surviving armoured elements and an exposition of war equipment. In the underground premises, you can see the equipment of an atomic bomb shelter. The vast Jesenky Mountains are mountains of springs. The spring wells and springs running down the magnificent hills have created this mountain landscape and have given rise to the spa industry tradition. Karlova Studnka spa takes pride in having the clearest atmosphere of all Central Europe. The town deserves to call itself the spa for even the healthy. Krun Mountains
The Krun Mountains are suitable for:
The mountains with the most eventful history became a popular tourist destination not long ago. Over the course of time, the mountains underwent unexpected changes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the mountains were very busy: the silver and tin mines produced coins thalers, which gave name to todays US dollars. The discovery of uranium deposits resulted in involuntary work of approximately 15,000 in particular political prisoners in the 1950s who were extracting uranium intended for the Soviet nuclear experiments near spa town of Jchymov. The subsequent extensive mining for coal and the development of power plants in the Mostecko region resulted in extensive devastation of the forests in the 1970s and 1980s. In spite of all the aforementioned events, surprised visitors are welcomed by beautiful young larch and birch forests with unfrequented forest cycle paths where you can teach your children to ride a bike.
