6-1 Cover 2

In 2009 we ran a 5-2 Cover 2 at Bishop Stang against Somerset with the same reads by the Corners and Safeties. We pawned the Nose, using a short, fast player, and had him take out the Center. Linebackers read the Guards. The year before we ran 5-2 Cover 2 without the outside reads and held Somerset to about 150 yards. Since that time they have since added a few plays to their arsenal and realized all they had to do was have the Center fall on the Nose. The reads were perfect. They brought you to the ball every time. However, there were some issues. 1. Personnel - Corners and Safeties did not want to come up and make a play. When they did come up they did not do as they were coached. Most of the time both took the alley, which did not exist without the force. - Defensive tackles seemed too proud to drop and kill the double team, but instead fought it and ended up on their backs a few yards back. 2. Offense - We did not put together any sustained drives, giving Somerset the opportunities to sustain long drives of their own. We were beaten up after the game. The offense was inconsistent and the defense spent way too much time on the field.

The reason I like the 6-1 is because the 5-2 NG becomes a wasted man against the Double Wing. With two guys in the A gaps I believe you can disrupt things a lot better. For me, the 6-1 is just a 5-2 with the slanting NG and stunting Backer. Two hard-nosed athletes would be my choice here. If you dont have the two necessary, then I would take two kids that are not afraid to get dirty and have them dive through the gaps. The other reason for the change is that I believe the Mike linebacker will be in a better place to be free to read and flow to the ball. If you have a true stud here it might not hurt to play a couple of yards deeper so he can read everything better and get better pursuit angles.

Sam and Will Align head up on Wingback to your side/If tight slot line up on TE (players are interchangeable)/ TE blocks down squeeze him down/attack FB or far Guard (delay attack to confuse them into blocking wrong person and leave you free)/ TE tries to reach rip across his face and maintain outside leverage (ride Sweep to the sideline)/Squeezing TE will delay pass release/TE shoeshines get on your horse and chase. Anchor and End Outside shade on Tackle/Take on double team trying to break through it (do not be a hero, if you cannot break it then grab jersey of Tackle and roll and drop into the TE/Tackle pulls protect for shoeshine/Tackle reaches get on pursuit angle to tackle sweep if it gets beyond first level/Tackle blocks inside wrong arm the Trap. Nose and Tackle Inside shade on Guard/Take the A gaps at all means necessary/Disrupt the pulling lanes/Force the Center to help out/Disruption is the key, not tackles. Mike Read the head of the Center/He is blocking Man on to Man away/He will tell you which side the ball is going/Once he gives you your read find the ball. CB Tight End blocks down ball is coming to C gap/Tight End reaches, the ball is going outside/Pass read you have the flat/Outside run read you are the force defender/If Tight End splits out read Wingback. S - Read Tight End/Tight End blocks down ball is coming to C gap/Tight End reaches, the ball is going outside/Pass read you have deep half to your side/Outside run read you are the alley defender/If Tight End splits out read Wingback.

When TE splits he and the Wing are exchanging responsibilities. Treat the Wingback as the TE and read him.
