Everybody Wins When We
Seek to be Inclusive
Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff rabbikrakoff@shaareyzedek.org

W
eek in and week out, we tune into reality television
shows in order to see who goes on to the next round
andwho gets eliminatedandsent home. Inthe worldof
RealityTelevision, someone must win, while many more have tolose!
If you think about it, Reality Television thrives on one
major concept: separation and elimination. In essence, telling
people they are not good enough, smart enough or even capable
enough. But much more than that, these programs reect the
very narrow and limited way we tend to view the world around
us: namelywhos in and whos out.
Stephen Covey in his International Bestseller, e 7 Highly
Eective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, reects on
the depth to which society has taught us to think of the world
in the stark terms of winners and losers. Covey explains that in
the realm of human interaction we focus largely on major
dichotomies: winners and losers, strong or weak, large or small.
But one persons success does not have to be achieved or gained
at the expense or exclusion of the success of others.
is destructive whos in and whos out paradigm is
internalized by most of us as youngsters and is often reinforced
subconsciously at home, at work, and throughout society as a
whole. e if I win, you lose approach manifests itself within
our families each time one sibling is compared with another
(think: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers)
and ultimately when patience, understanding or love is given or
taken away on the basis of these painful comparisons.
Covey cites several examples of how we come to embody
this either/or win or lose mentality on a profound level. We
incorrectly think, If Im better than my brother, my parents
will love me more, or we come to believe that My parents
dont love me as much as they love my sister so I must not be
as valuable. And so, we learn to perpetuate the mistaken fact
that somebody must win, someone else must loseand the
losers are left behind. But it doesnt have to be that way!
As is seen in our current reading of the Book of Exodus,
Moses displays perhaps his greatest leadership moment when
he is called by God, along with his brother Aaron, to lead the
Israelite people out of slavery in Egypt. After the rst seven
plagues have gotten the attention of both the Egyptians and
the Israelites, Moses returns to Pharaoh following the seventh
plague of hail, and begs the Egyptian leader to make just one
concession: to permit the Israelites to go forth just to celebrate
the Lords festival. Surprisingly, Moses request is not for complete
liberation but for a vacation day from building the pyramids,
in order to worship the Almighty.
At this point, even Pharaohs courtiers plead with their
leader to grant this small request, and almost miraculously,
Pharaoh seems to soften and asks Moses: Who are the ones
you will take with you?
Moses responds without hesitation: We will all go, young
and old, our sons and our daughters, our ocks and our herds;
for we must all observe the Lords holy day. But Pharaoh wont
have it. He concedes that he will allowonly the men to go worship
the Lord, but no one else.
Presented with a terrible dilemmato leave the women and
children behindMoses takes a mighty risk to be inclusive.
Although he might never get the opportunity for freedom
again, in an incredible showof leadership, Moses opts to remain
with all the Israelites in Egypt and forgo the celebratory festival.
In Moses mind, there can be no winners or losers, there is no
either/or. Everybody must be included in the liberation and
no one can remain behind. ey will be victorious as a people,
or they will all go down together.
What we learn here is that one major dierence between a
good leader and a great one is the ability to know when a
compromise is inappropriate, and Moses clearly gets it. We can
appreciate from examples in our own lives how hard it must
have been for Moses, given a window toward freedom for only
a portion of his people, to instead stand up for keeping the
people united. Moses teaches us that just like a community that
cannot make room for everyone is no community at all, so too a
Judaism that cannot make room for all Jews is no Judaism at all.
I imagine that if we are honest with ourselves, we recognize
that we have all been guilty at times of shutting others out, of
leaving them behind, and of seeing ourselves as winners and
others as losers. Sadly, when we do this we close ourselves o,
forming all types of cliques and arbitrarily deciding that no one
else is welcome to enter our inner circle. But Moses reminds
us that Jewish moral behavior requires us to reach out, to be in-
clusive and to cast our nets wider. For once we begin to change
the way we approach the world, we will see more clearly that
there is more room than we ever imagined for multiple winners
in every situation.
As we approach the upcoming holiday of Purim, a festival
lled with sheer joy and jubilant celebration, may we come to
fully recognize that by approaching one another in the spirit of
inclusion, we tap into the power with which Mordecai and Es-
ther united the Jewish people, a power that ultimately led to the
defeat and demise of the evil Haman. And that, I believe, is the
secret of Purim revealed! Chag Purim Sameach!

VOLUNTEER AT SHAAREY ZEDEK
Participate in a mitzvah! There are CSZ
members who require transportation in
order to attend Shabbat and holiday serv-
ices. Please call Darlene Hall in the synagogue of-
fice if you are able, once or on a regular basis, to
share a ride with one of our members living in the
West Bloomfield, Farmington, Birmingham, and Oak
Park areas. Sign up today to be in the pool of volun-
teer drivers. Dont delay. These CSZ members are de-
pending on us each and every week to be with their
CSZ family for our inspiring and uplifting services,
and warm and welcoming congregational Shabbat
kiddush/luncheon.
Join the Office Volunteer Squad! Do you
have some time to spare on any given
Wednesday? Volunteer in the synagogue
office! There are always projects to complete,
refreshments for your palette, and friendly faces
everywhere. Volunteer hours are 10:00 a.m. - 4:00
p.m., except on Jewish holidays. If you are able to
volunteer for an hour or more within this block of
time, we would greatly appreciate it. No prior expe-
rience is necessary and casual attire is acceptable.
Volunteers will be notified weekly by an office staff
member regarding the upcoming available assign-
ments. To sign up, please call Shelley Golsky at
248/357-5544.

Purim is the only Jewish holiday that
is not imbued with some form of
religious solemnity. It is a day of great
rejoicing, feasting and drinking until
we cannot decipher between the phrases
blessed is Mordecai and cursed is Haman.

One Small Jewish Step for Man.
One Giant Leap for Humankind.
Rabbi Aaron L. Starr rabbistarr@shaareyzedek.org
Follow me on Twitter: @rabbistarr
Director of Education and Youth
O
ne small step for man. one giant leap for mankind,
remarked astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20,
1969, as he became the rst person to step foot on
the moon. While Armstrong passed away this past August, his
wordsand even more so, his actionswill be remembered
as a pivotal moment in the history of space exploration. e
small step of an individual, based on the great work of a nation,
did indeed transform the entire world.
Judaism, I believe, is no dierent. ere is a tradition that
the messiah will come when everybody (God willing), on one
Friday night, lights Shabbat candles. Similarly, the tradition goes,
the messiah will come when (God forbid) no one lights Shabbat
candles on a given Friday night. e collective action of indi-
vidual households maintains the power to transform the world.
Imagine, then, if every person in our synagogue took one
small step in his/her own personal Jewish journey. Wouldnt
those steps, too, become a giant leap for mankind? In a shul of
our size, our collective steps would lead to hundreds of lives
touched through volunteerismat senior centers and homeless
shelters, at food pantries and homes for those with special
needs; through a deeper devotion to Godthrough greater at-
tendance at prayer services and educational opportunities as
well as increased celebration of Shabbat in the home or giving
of tzedakah throughout the community. our collective steps
would strengthen Israel and the united States eorts to support
the Holy Land. our Jewish steps would engage the old and inspire
the young, transforming our individual Jewish lives, Shaarey
Zedeks communal experience, and truly, transform the world.
one small step for a man or woman leads to one giant leap for
humankind.
So, in these dark months of January and February, let me
challenge you to bring light by ascending the ladder of Jewishness.
Let me challenge you to take upon yourself or your family a
Covenant, a sacred contract to engage in just one (or two) steps
in your Jewish journey. And, let me challenge you to call Rabbi
Krako or me to assist you on your Jewish journey. Whether
your steps be communal or private, ritual, educational or
Tikkun Olam, let me challenge youall you need is one. And
who knows, together, our steps might mean a giant leap for
humankind.

ere is no question more central to life, perhaps, than what happens when it ends. Many grew
up learning little to nothing about what Judaism teaches regarding the afterlife. Why? What does
Judaism teach about Heaven and Hell; the nature of the soul; bodily resurrection, the messianic
era, communing with the dead; the importance to the deceased of kaddish; and why are many
liberal Jewseven rabbisafraid to discuss it?

For nearly 50 years, the Torah Fund campaign of
Womens League for Conservative Judaism has provided
nancial aid for students, and vital support for e Jewish
eological Seminary of Americas residences, campus and
library.
Torah Fund donors receive a beautiful pin in apprecia-
tion of their support of the Seminary. Contributions begin
at the $180 Benefactors level.
Sisterhood would like to publicly thank Anna and yale
Levin for their incredible hospitality, and the Torah Fund
Chairs, Cookie Lachover and Debby Rosen, who worked
so hard to make this program such a success. Rabbi Krako
and Rabbi Starr oered delightful, sincere answers to our
questions, giving us additional insight into their lives.
Many laughs were had as we all enjoyed this special after-
noon with our Rabbis.
