@rabbikrakoff

young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a rabbi, if they could discuss his use of the family car. His father took him into his study and said, Ill make a deal with you. You bring up your grades, study Talmud a little, get your hair cut and then we will talk about the car. After about a month, the boy came back. They again went into the study where the father said, Son, I am very proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you have studied the Talmud diligently, but you have not yet gotten your hair cut. The young man waited a moment and then replied, You know Dad, I have been thinking. If you will remember, famous figures like Noah, Samson, and even Moses had long hair. The rabbi thought for a moment and replied, Yes, my son, and they walked everywhere they Indeed, there is a lot of walking that takes place in the Torah, especially in the days leading up to receiving the commandments at Mount Sinai. It is in Exodus Chapters 19 and 20 that individual families

to instruct the people to prepare themselves physically and spiritually for the coming Revelation. According to Gods command, Moses returns to the people (still without the Torah) and warns them to guard their purity, do their laundry and wash all their clothes in anticipation of God coming down from on high with the Torah, a moment to be ushered in by a long blast of the Shofar. At this point, God descends the mountain - not yet to give the Torah - but to call Moses to once again return to the top of Mount Sinai. And just as Moses reaches the zenith for the third time in three days, God immediately sends him back down the mountain to warn the people not to come any closer to the mountain than they alr eady are. The Almighty then tells Moses that he must come back with his brother Aaron at his side for it is at that point - that they will actually receive the Torah. What is God trying to accomplish by sending Moses up and down the mountain so many times? Is Moses being tested? Why would God put Moses through this exercise in futility? Perhaps this is to show that in pursuing anything that is important or meaningful to us - there is almost always a series of ups and downs in the process (literally!) In other words, sometimes we must descend in order to ascend! Menachem Mendel of Kotzk explains that when Moses was physically standing on Sinai, it was clear that he was not fully present emotionally or spiritually. Moses, like all of us, needed to know that physically going up to Sinai was not enough - he had to have his head (body, mind and spirit) in the game. It is in this way that the holiday of Shavuot reminds us through Moses mountain travels that we must seriously examine all of our interactions and realize the importance of being completely present and in the moment in whatever we do. And so, as we celebrate the Revelation of Torah again this year let us not only emphasize the majesty of the moment at Sinai - but may we soon learn to temper the plethora of distractions and focus on what is really most important in our lives - today, tomorrow and always! Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a Chag Sameach from our home to yours!

become cemented into a nation of people with a common background and belief system, the anniversary which we celebrate on Shavuot, Saturday night May 26, Sunday May 27 and Monday May 28, 2012 (Monday is also Yizkor). As the Biblical text teaches - on the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the Land of Egypt, the people entered the wilderness of Sinai and Moses disappears into the heavens to receive the Torah. While the people were encamping opposite the mountain, Moses went up to God to express the peoples readiness to carry out what had been destined for them since the days of Abraham and Sarah. Yet, Moses quickly comes back down the mountain without the Torah in hand. He then summons all the elders of the people to ask them if they were willing to make a commitment to living a life of Torah and mitzvot with all their hearts and souls. Having secured the peoples consent in one voice (probably the last time our people spoke in one voice) Moses goes back up the mountain. While atop Mount Sinai the second time Moses assures God that the people can handle the weight of the commandments. Then, God asks Moses to once again go down the mountain - this time in order

o you remember those ancient communication devices called Palm Pilots? I will admit to having been a user. Among my favorite features of this personal digital assistant was the opportunity to beam programs to another user; the recipient of the beam would receive a message saying, Do you want to accept ______? S/he then accepted or rejected the beam. Well, I loved going around beaming a particular programthe Torahto anyone with a Palm Pilot. Do you want to accept the Torah? they were asked. Brilliant. Technology changes quickly, and it has the ability to transform society. For centuries the Torah was transmitted from handwritten scroll to handwritten scroll, making it nearly impossible for the average person to obtain. Scrolls ultimately gave way to the printed book, made accessible thanks to the invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg. Suddenly, accessibility to the Torah increased exponentially. With the advent of the computer and eventually the internet, sacred scripture again grew in availability. It took 18 months to sell the first million Palm Pilots, giving the opportunity to virtually anyone to hold the Torah in the palm of the their hand. It took only 24 hours to sell the first millions iPhone 4ss, with hundreds of apps and e-books offering the opportunity to read the Hebrew Bible. The Torah is, indeed, everywhere. On May 27 and May 28 of this year we will celebrate the holiday of Shavuot, commemorating our ancestors acceptance of the Torah at Sinai. Do you want to accept the Torah? they were asked. Acknowledging their desire, the beam was completed and we today are inheritors of their wise decision. More than that, though, the Torah sits literally at our fingertips, waiting for us to open the book or hit the on-switch. The Torah is available in bookstores and in our library. It is available on the internet and as e-books. We can download it to our iPhones and iPads. Technology has transformed our society, but have we allowed it to transform our lives? Ancient truths, sacred obligations and timeless wisdom wait for us in the pages of our sacred scriptures if only we take the time to open ourselves up. If I may be of any assistance in helping you to access our tradition, please contact me.

Join your CSZ friends in the Detroit Free Press run/walk on Sunday, October 21! Rabbi Aaron Starr has taken upon himself the personal challenge of running in the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon. In the fast-paced world we live in, there is often the need to create moments of pause. Jewish rituals and traditions can provide the perfect opportunity for creating these moments. Check out the following ideas: Celebrate Lag BOmer (the 33 rd day between Passover and Shavuot) on Thursday, May 10! This holiday honors the life of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar (the basic work of Kabbalah). The themes of the holiday are Jewish unity as well as love and respect for one another. Traditions include holding bonfires and childrens parades. Happy Mothers Day! Moms - Take the night off and join us for Shabbat dinner with your family at Music & Motzi, Friday, May 11. Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) is celebrated this year on Sunday, May 20 commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in June 1967. Religious School children will take part in an interactive morning of Israel learning experiences. All Shaarey Zedek families are invited to join us at 12:00 p.m. for an Israeli-themed picnic at Shaarey Zedek. Which road leads to Mt. Sinai? Families with young children (3-7 years) join us to find out on Sunday, May 27 at 10:15 a.m. for SHAVUOT 4 KIDZ!

Megan Topper mtopper@shaareyzedek.org Assistant Director of Youth & Family Education

Each year we strive to improve our education program, providing deeper and more meaningful opportunities for children and families to engage in Jewish life. In line with this effort, we are now in the middle of the second year of a three year process named CSI 2 : Congregational School Improvement Initiative. This initiative is led by committee chairman and board member, Jeff Linden, Rabbi Aaron Starr and Megan Topper along with a committee of volunteers. Below is a summary of our accomplishments and current work: Curriculum Committee: The committee is currently considering a redesigned curriculum which will be thematically integrated. This will allow for greater depth of learning in each of the content areas and create time for addressing other Religious School goals. Religious School Taskforce: The committee is in the midst of solidifying new components of the education program for the 2012-2013 school year.
