Philosophy of Ministry
As I consider youth ministry, I believe the goal is fostering transformational life change in students through the power of the Holy Spirit. Students are not influenced most by school, extra-curricular activities, or church; it is the relationships they are in that will have the longest-lasting impact on their lives. I believe that relational youth ministry, focused on building relationships and meaningfully engaging in discipleship with students is the most effective way to spark the change of heart that God desires to occur in all people. The goal of this life change is to bring the student closer to God, to a position of complete reliance on Him, where they are learning how to live as Christ lived. Relational youth ministry allows for this transformation to thrive in several ways. First of all, by developing meaningful relationships with youth, adults can model a Christian life for them to see firsthand. Secondly, as adults gain credibility with their students, they are able to reach out to them with truth in a loving way, that is not seen as too authoritative or demanding. Finally, students live in a fast-paced world full of empty promises and broken dreams. A ministry that is committed to establishing lasting relationships with its students will most effectively develop the trust necessary for students to fully embrace the truths being taught. Relational youth ministry is implemented by making genuine relationships the key tool for cultivating life change. Trained adult volunteers are needed to invest in the lives of students, guiding them with advice, love, and care. Students dont learn and grow simply by attending weekly meetings. In relational youth ministry, it is small discipleship groups and mentoring relationships that allow for deeper interactions that are utilized to spark students to grow in Christ. The most important gift that any adult Christian adult can give to a teen is their personal, thriving relationship with Jesus Christ. Creating small groups of students focused on discipleship and growing in Christ provide an opportunity for adult volunteers are to invest in their lives through building trust and personally caring for the students. These adult volunteers must be trained and chosen carefully, but if they are men and women of character they will be able to have a great impact on the lives of their students. The relationships that they form will be more genuine than those formed by any one youth pastor charged with reaching out to all of his students. Through these relationships students will be spurred towards growth in Christ, and the Holy Spirit will have a powerful opportunity to use volunteers to cultivate genuine life change in the youth of the church.
