Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; Welcome to the New Year, 2013. As I write this, President Obama is flying home from Hawaii to meet with Republicans on the Hill to see if they can reach some workable compromise.....I hope they did! I have never been a big fan of cliff diving!! I have taken the last few weeks off from updating you on the Diocesan Capital Campaign. Christmas takes precedence over Campaigns! It is interesting that the origins of Christianity began in such humble beginnings, surrounded by the cold of the night and the uncertainty of hospitality and protection from the elements. Here we are, in the midst of many 'cliffs' getting ready to embark on our first Diocesan Campaign to develop a Catholic centerpiece from the purchase of the Crystal Cathedral Campus. There is uncertainty in that we have never attempted a diocesan wide campaign before in the history of our diocese and there is real concern that the 'elements' of the current economic conditions may push against the success of the campaign. Some folks are concerned that there will be hesitation on some people's part because they are unsure as to how their contributions will be spent. Will they actually be used for the campaign or will they be siphoned off to cover sexual harassment claims? All of these are legitimate concerns and we will address them as we go forward. I have every confidence that our new bishop, Kevin Vann, will be an excellent navigator as we go forward. As a local Santa Ana boy, I remember well the beginnings of our Diocese in the mid 70's. The beginnings were humble indeed. I had just entered the seminary and I recall the bottom floor of one of the buildings at the Sisters of St. Joseph's in Orange became our Chancery office. We were cash poor and needed to find our identity as a local church apart from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Lunch at the Chancery was sending someone out for Carl's Junior hamburgers (fries and a coke as well!). Eventually, the religious sisters who owned and operated Marywood High School for girls decided that they could no longer maintain their presence in Orange County and put the school up for sale. Bishop Johnson saw it as a great opportunity and since its purchase it has served as our Diocesan center for offices and retreats. It is up for sale again now that we have purchased the Crystal Cathedral Campus. The number of Catholics in Orange County has grown significantly and so have the needs of the Church. In purchasing the Crystal Cathedral Campus, I believe this purchase is the next step along the way from our humble beginnings of our diocese. We began in a couple of offices rented to us by the good St. Joseph Sisters, continued to expand by utilizing a closed Catholic high school and now we are expanding again because of the opportunity given us by the bankruptcy of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries. Together in Christ;
