Experimental Setup
The Gear Pump Test Rig is a self-contained unit operated on a closed circuit basis containing a sump tank. The setup consists of a gear pump having a pair of meshed gears, coupled with DC motor which is varied by means of a Thyristor controlled DC drive to vary the RPM of motor. A RPM indicator with proximity sensor indicates the RPM of the pump. Flow of fluid is measured by using a measuring tank and a stopwatch. Vacuum gauge is fitted on the suction line and pressure gauge is fitted on the delivery line to measure the pressure.
Utilities required
1. Power Supply, Single Phase, 220V, 1kW 2. Oil used: SAE 20W/40 (30 litres). 3. Space required: 1.5 x 0.75 m.
Experimental procedure
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Clean the apparatus and make all the tanks free from dust. Close the drain valves provided. Fill sump tank with oil (SAE 40) and ensure that no foreign particles are there. Open flow control valve given on the discharge line and control vale given on the suction line. Set the revolution of motor/pump with the help of variac. Ensure that all ON/OFF switches given on the panel are at OFF position. Now switch on the Main Power Supply (220 V AC, 50 Hz) and switch on the pump. Record discharge pressure by means of Pressure Gauge, provided on discharge line. Record suction pressure by means of Vacuum Gauge, provided at the suction of the pump. Record the power consumption by means Energy meter, provided in panel with the help of stopwatch. Measure the discharge by using measuring tank and stopwatch.

Repeat the same procedure for different speeds of pump and discharge. When experiment is over, gate valve is proper open provided on discharge line. Set the variac to zero position. Switch OFF the pump first. Switch OFF Power Supply to Panel (MCB).

Results
Obtained the characteristic curves for the gear pump. The avg. pump efficiency is =28.4% Maximum efficiency max=36.7%
Inference
The pump efficiency increases with increasing discharge. The gear pumps provides very large head (about50m) but very low discharge. The flow rate of a gear pump is proportional to its speed and almost independent of any pressure between two points of the system Gear pumps are suitable where large head is required. They can handle viscous liquids (oils) such as SAE 40 we used here, so they are used in oil wells where large head is required.
