Port description
The Port of Beira is situated on the Pungoe river estuary. It is the second largest port in Mozambique with 12 quays. Beira has always been essentially a transit port, handling the import and export cargoes from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and other countries in the region. The entrance of the port is 20 nautical miles from the open water along the dredged 60,0 m wide Macuti channel which has buoys and lighting, with a minimum depth below chart datum of 2 m. Anchorage for shallow draft vessels is situated at Franquia near the port entrance. Pilotage is compulsory. Advanced notice is required 24 hours before arrival of the vessel.

Max. permissible draught on spring tide is 9 m, max. permissible draught on tide is between 6.5 m and 8.5 m, max. length overall (LOA) permissible is 195 m / Water density : 1.005/ 1.025 (river estuary) / ISPS : Level 1 / Weather : Prevailing winds SE during March and NE during October to February. Oil Terminal : Designed for heavy oils handling only, berth 11 can accommodate tankers up to 20000 DWT, and is tted with a pipeline for rened products. Berth 11 was the ofcial tanker berth, but mooring is not always possible at this berth due to strong tidal currents. The berth has a pipeline system with capacity of 400 tonnes per hour with the following pipes : 4 x 12 for unloading, 6 x 8 for loading. Fuel Terminal : Located at quay 12, the modern fuel terminal, which was inaugurated in 1994 has the capacity to load and unload tankers of 500 to 2 500 SWT and from 500 to 50 000 DWT. The terminal system consists essentially of four pipelines for rened products such as diesel, petrol, Jet Avgas and fuel oil. This terminal handles 1 200kl per hour and has an installed capacity of 2,5 million tonnes per year. Cold storage terminal : This infrastructure is equipped with cold stores that have a capacity for 1 100 tonnes at temperatures of 1,5 to 4,5 degrees centigrade, and for 490 tonnes at temperatures of -9 to -20 degrees centigrade respectively. The terminal is equipped with electrical forklifts for handling the cargo.

The port of Maputo is the largest port in Mozambique and is ideally situated as it is the closest port to the industrial heartland of South Africa. All berths have between 7,0m and 11.0m draft alongside and entrance to Maputo is via Canal du Nort. Pilotage / tugs is compulsory in daylight hours only and pilots board at Buoy 6. Berthing / sailing is presently only permitted during daylight hours. The port of Maputo normally works 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
