Statistics Project- Community and Service Introduction: For this project, we had to survey people to come up with quantitative

data to write a report on. We had to come up with a question, and do some research on it- in order to find out more about it. This is a QUANTITATIVE assessment, which meant that we needed a big amount of people to survey on. Research Question: Which community & service group are people in Year 8 students most involved in? Areas of Interaction-Reference: We have to relate our survey topic to one of the Areas of Interaction. Since my question is about which Community and Service, I am going to relate mine to the Community and Service one- and I am going to be surveying students in year 8 to find out which community or service group they are involved in, and then compare them at the end. Data Collection: I will collect my data for this project, by doing an actual survey. This will be a physical survey- where i go around to every student in year 8, asking if they are involved in community and service- and which one. If i find someone else in the class who is doing a similar project to me, I might pair up with them to collect our data together- I did find a partner to do my data collection with, Noe. Calculations: RANGE: I have quite a large range of numbers which is: 72. MODE: The mode for this data would be Not Involved since this

is the group or outcome that appears/occurs the most out of all of them. MEAN: If I assume that everyone that I surveyed (100 Total) did 1 community and service group, then each group will have: 100 (total surveyed) divided by 8(amount of categories) = 12.5- and since you cant get .5 of a person, this will be rounded to roughly 13 students per group.

COMMENTS/EXPLANATIONS:
The way I chose to collect my survey data, was to go out and do a physical survey, and I think this was a very useful way except that it took longer than others. I got plenty of data, and maybe even a bit too much- but I took a long time to finish surveying all the class, whereas others finished in a couple of classes. Although it took a while, it was very successful and it was quite easy for me to work with the total- which, by coincidence, was 100! I decided to graph my data in a bar graph, more like a column graph since it was vertically set up. I wanted to do it this way, because I thought this would be one of the easiest ways to show my data. I had discrete data, which meant that I couldnt make a histogram because I had categories for my outcome, instead of numbers. The main thing that I wanted to show in my graph was just the comparison between each of the categories- basically showing how many people are involved in each, compared to the other. This was the clearest way to show it, but another graph that I could have used would be a Pie Graph- because that can also show the difference in the size, which will tell the viewers how each one differs. The main reason that I didnt use this was because, when I am trying to show 2 or 3 people it will look reasonably similar, and it may be unclear or not make sense to the people viewing my graph.

In my calculations, I had to miss out on finding one of the averages, which was the Median- since I have discrete quantitative data, and not measurements or numbers- I cant find the Median. In my survey, the overall question that I was asking was Which Community and Service Group is Most Popular So; to find this data- and answer this question the Mode is the most useful average/calculation for me. The mode basically means the most popular one, or the one that comes up the most, If I had rephrased my question, to make it like I was finding out, if everyone (out of the total 100) was involved a service group, how many would be in each (on average) then that would make my mean the most useful. My data is valid as the method I chose was to go and physically do a whole year 8 surveys, in each class. Had I conducted an online survey, I may have had more responses however; I wouldnt have had any way of verifying the accuracy of the responses. Based on the data I have collected, I can see that not many students do Community and Service in Y8. This may be useful information to show to Ms. Teresa in order to help her to offer a wider range of service groups at NIST- which appeal to the Year 8 Students. I can use my information to actually take another survey and maybe even start my own service group which more people will be interested in! After doing all my research, I have found the answer to my question- and I have seen that the most popular option was actually the people who are not involved. But out of all the actual groups, Camellian Home and Mushi Mushi turned out the most popular- with 6 students in each, which was the highest out of all the actual groups. I think this project turned out very successful and I was able to gather the data that I required, and write a good analysis on it. There were a few things that I would probably improve if I were to do this again, in terms of time management and calculations. As I had said, earlier one- I used up a lot of my time doing a physical survey, this would have been a lot faster if I had done it online. The only reason why I

didnt was because I had no way of knowing if my results were true- and not everyone would have done it, most people wouldve just deleted the email! Also, since I have discrete quantitative data (not continuous) this didnt let me find the median of the answers. That was on calculation that I missed out on, and maybe next time I will change my question to make it continuous data. Overall, I think I did a great survey- written I good analysis (I hope) and I can think of many ways that I can continue this investigation if I need to in the future
