Ski tips
A little bit of knowledge can make a big difference to everyones holiday. Check out the 'FIS skiers code of conduct' - its your guide to safe behaviour on the slopes and is a legal obligation for everyone on the mountain. Remember that skiing should be safe and fun for everyone so dont push your friends and family to venture onto slopes that are beyond their capabilities. The Ski Welt area has a massive 279km to explore. Take advantage of our Social Ski days to explore what it has to offer. Take a look at the Tool kit to make the very best of your holiday.
q q q q

New to snowsports? Havent skied in a while?

These tips are perfect for you. Layer up! Wearing a series of layers will keep you warmer and allow you to adjust your clothing based on the conditions. Wear only one pair of good quality ski socks to get maximum comfort and avoid blisters. Ski boots need to be snug and comfortable, you should just be able to wiggle your toes. Take any advice the guys in the rental shop have to give, time spent here will allow you to really make the most of your holiday. Make a note of any barcodes on your rental equipment, it will ensure you don't mix it up with anyone elses. Which can be not only dangerous but frustrating for both parties. If youre a boarder, make sure youre happy with your stance on the board in the hire shop. Things take longer in ski boots, give yourself time to get around undo the boot clips and youll find it easier to walk. Carrying your skis is easier when you know how. Slide them together and carry balanced over one shoulder. Hold them vertically when going up or down stairs. For a speedy start to your first day, collect your ski / snowboard equipment as soon as you can. Split your skis with a friend or family member to deter theft. Alternatively invest in a ski or board lock. It is uncommon for equipment to be taken but does sometimes happen. Trust your instructor listen to what they say, accept their advice and youll go far. Keep at it. The learning curves for skiing and boarding are quite steep. Invest the time and you'll create some amazing memories. If youre boarding with skiers, borrow a pole to help you scoot along the flat and make sure they think to avoid drag lifts if they want to remain your friend. Take a snack and water with you to keep you going. Having your mobile with you is handy too, in case of emergency or just for arranging a meet-up. Learn to board will need a ski school card to meet your group up at the middle station, so make sure you exchange your Tuition voucher at ski school first thing Sunday morning.

Essential insider knowledge whatever your ski level Choose your lift
One of the best ways to avoid the morning rush is to be there just before 9am. If you are not booked into morning ski or board school then going just after 9.30am will also prevent long queues. The beginner areas do tend to be busy on the first day so if you can ski or board, try the lifts and ski areas away from here.

Great For Beginners

The nursery slopes around the Hartkaiser are perfect for getting grips with the snow, whilst the slopes in Going are quiet and wide, perfect for starting to get out and about.

Intermediates
The Scheffau bowl is great for those of you who are intermediates looking to build confidence. As the name suggests, it is a wide bowl of pistes that lead to a central point in Scheffau. Further a field, run number 25 from the back of the Hohe Slave in

Crystal info pack page 7 of 15. Now available pre-departure crystalski.co.uk/infopack Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, the information provided may change from time to time. Your Representative will update you with any changes on arrival if necessary. Date printed - 09/01/2013

Soll is long and wide to practise those carving turns.

Advanced
If you want to challenge yourself on the piste, the runs off the Hohe Salve will keep your heart racing, whereas powder lovers will be in their element in the tree lined areas in Scheffau and Ellmau. Dont forget to always take a guide when you go off the piste.

Brilliant views and lunch in the sun

Our best tip for lunch is to take advantage of the chalet packed lunch service for just 5, and picnic at the top of the funicular with spectacular views of the Wilderkaiser. Otherwise, try some of the restaurants off the beaten track, the prices can be up to 2 cheaper for a main course.

Good value lunch

The Skihutte Aualm (34) has a great view into the Scheffau bowl as well as fantastic local food to try. Definitely try Tyroler Grostl, a fry up of potatoes, meat, onions and herbs topped off with a fried egg. Perfect mountain food.

Something really special

Without a doubt one of the best lunch spots sits at the bottom of the Hartkaiser nursery slopes in the centre of Ellmau. Warm up by the open fire and try some of the local food to really appreciate what makes Austria a fantastic place to ski.

Dont forget
If youre red run competent join us social skiing. And you can get more info on the ski area at your welcome. For lifts and pistes all worked out for you, take a look at Resort secrets in the Tool kit.

Fancy something or somewhere different?

Maybe a carving clinic, bumps lesson, off-piste adventure with a guide, snowboard taster or a ski away day? Decisions, decisions to get booked in to whatever takes your fancy contact your rep as soon as youve made your decision.

The Crystal teams favourites

All of the lifts in Ski Welt are owned by a different farmer or family. This is the reason you have to click into all of the lifts. The benefit is you can track all of your progress for free and see how much skiing you've done with Ski Line. In the Scheffau bowl and surrounding area the pistes are a bit wider than elsewhere. They are great confidence boosters and are great for cruising along for riders of all levels. In general the Soll area is slightly more advanced, the easily accessible Scheffau and Ellmau area is more suitable for beginners and intermediates. When heading back over into Soll, if you're running a bit late use the Kalbersalve lift 2. Once are you at the top of that you can always get back via run 51a, keeping to the left and coming down blue 43a. Both the Blue & Red home runs aren't great. Save your legs and take the gondola down. Otherwise if you can head through Rigi, it's a really nice way to finish your day. Once at the top of the Hohe Salve, enjoy the views and try blue 25 and red 20 down into Hopfgarten. The black runs are all good, they are quite short but there is enough to keep you busy all day. The ski routes (marked with a dotted red line) are non pisted but marked routes. They require good snow and to be a high level rider, all normal off piste precautions should be taken. The ski route down into Schrandlhof is amazing, you do have to get a bus back into Westendorf so check with us to make sure it's running. Black 112 in Westendorf is arguable the second steepest run in Austria, feeling brave? The whole Westendorf area is slightly higher than Soll with most of the runs between 1400m and 1800m so there's always plenty to explore. For the parks the one in Westendorf is slightly larger but the Soll one is getting bigger every year. There's plenty to keep you busy, just stay safe and make sure you can enjoy your whole holiday with us. One final tip is on run 7 to the side of Zinsberg there is a speed trap, see how fast you can go.

Things to do in resort The Red Horse and Soll Sportsbar (next to M-Preis) has table football, a dartboard, jenga, connect 4, uno cards and playing cards. Swimming Pool Info - The leisure centre is closed for the 12/13 season. However you do have the option of using the Franzlhof facilites which consists of a sauna, solarium, infrared cabins, whirlpools, aromatic steam back and a relaxation and rest area.

Eating out
Here are some of our favourite places to eat out in resort; Look out for the Tagesmenu in local restaurants. This is the daily special, usually made with seasonal produce and is always good value for money Make sure you sample traditional Tyrolean mountain food. Tiroler Grstl (chopped up potatoes, pork, beef, onions and herbs topped with a fried egg) and Ksesptzle (small egg dumplings with local cheese and fried onions on top) are hearty meals made with inexpensive, local ingredients and usually served in their own individual frying pans If you need a dessert share a main course with a friend and then share one of the filling Austrian sweets. Kaiserschmarrn

Crystal info pack page 9 of 15. Now available pre-departure crystalski.co.uk/infopack Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, the information provided may change from time to time. Your Representative will update you with any changes on arrival if necessary. Date printed - 09/01/2013

(chopped up pancake with fruit compote) or Germkndel (sweet dumpling filled with plum sauce, served with custard) are actually full meals in themselves so you wont go hungry! The Red Horse Pub / Sll Sportsbar has a fantastic selection of food including steaks, ribs, mexican and not forgetting the famous Rubin special, the XXL Burger. On a Wednesday why not join your fellow skiers at our fondue night. Held in the traditionally Austrian Dorf Stub'n, take your pick from a meat or cheese fondue. Alternatively, visit the Hexenalm restaurant for a magnificent Witch's platter. Speak to your Crystal representative to reserve your place. If you are wanting a tasty steak or mixed grill then try the Auf Da Mhle located above the Whisky Mhle. They also have pizzas which are only 5 between 5pm and 6pm. On a Tuesday and Thursday evening Hotel Christophorus offers a schnitzel evening with 4 types of XXXL schnitzel with 1 side dish of your choice for only 7.90

Apres Ski
Come to the Red Horse Pub and Sll Sports Bar for the ultimate apres ski, live music, DJs with dance floor, and party atmosphere! For all your sporting needs the Red Horse has action with commentary on 6 screens. A perfect pit stop for all the family is the Dorf Stub'n where you can relax in front of the open fire with a beverage of your choice. A great bar for some apres and to watch a band is Salvenstadl where you will also find some great prices on drinks. Whilst bars and restaurants may stock imported drinks such as Guinness & Gordons Gin, the local brands are far better value. Spirits are expensive in most bars. Instead drink the local beer and house wine. Austria is famous for its fantastic local breweries, try Gosser brewed in Leoben or the local beer of the Arlberg region is Fohrenburger from Bludenz. If the aprs-ski has progressed to shots, sample some of the variety of Austrian schnapps (Obstler will be the cheapest but Williamsbirne possibly more tasty). Jgermeister is another shot favourite. If you cant stomach it by itself order a Flying Hirsch (Jgermeister and Red Bull) and ask a local to show you how its drunk. Please drink responsibly and in moderation, visit www.drinkaware.co.uk for further information.

Evenings out
Check out Crystal Activities to make the most of your holiday in Soll. Why not join us for our quiz night at the Underground Bar. The only dance floor in Sll can be found at the Whisky Mhle. We suggest you buy the local brands which will be cheaper than imported brands. Monday and Friday evening at the Hotel Christophorus offers Live music from the 'Blood Shot Eyes' (9pm - Midnight) There is live music on Mondays and Thursdays in the Red Horse Pub. Every week you will find live bands in several bars across the village of Sll, including Salvenstadl, Whisky Muhle and Rossinni. Every Friday you will find husky rides at the nursery slopes, but please bare in mind that this does get very busy. Tickets are available at the tourist office in the centre of town. Fun for all the family - you can pick some great bum boards here in any of the supermarkets for a very small cost, or rent a sledge from Stoll hire - 4 for half a day. If you have any tips of your own please share them. Become a guest blogger. Or take a look and see what tips have been shared at ski-buzz.co.uk .

Families
Weve suggested some family friendly activities to keep you all entertained when not on the slopes.

Things to do
Crystals chosen ski school supplier in Sll has special courses for children to make sure your children also get to enjoy funpacked mountain time in a safe and friendly environment. Ski School Embacher accept children from 5 yrs old and teaches them in groups of similar ages and abilities so they can learn whilst making friends and having fun. For an extra 10 per day you can also arrange for your child to have lunch with the ski school leaving you free to enjoy a full day of skiing yourself. The best place to buy baby essentials (nappies, baby food etc) can be brought from Schlecker (similar to high street pharmacies back home). Schlecker is located opposite the Whiskey Mhle in the centre of town. Bum boarding is a low-cost fun activity for all the family. When ski school finishes nursery slopes are the perfect location and bum boards (glorified tea-trays!) can be bought from the Spar supermarket in the centre of town for just a couple of euros. Race each other, link up in trains, set up an obstacle course and enjoy! Save some euros by sharing lunches on the mountain. Child-friendly food includes Wiener Schnitzel (pork fried in breadcrumbs) and chips which usually costs around 8 but will easily feed two children (if not two adults). Kaiserschmarrn (chopped up pancake with apple sauce) is another mountain favourite usually too big for most appetites! Many hotels have a selection of family board games for you to use free of charge ask at your reception Bar Austria (next to the Crystal office) has pool tables, table football and darts available which are avalible to use for a couple of euros. Bar Austria is a smoking bar, but the games area is sectioned off and is non smoking. Turbo tubing is great fun for kids and adults alike. Join us on Thursday evenings as we take you to the best tubing venue in the area where you'll get the chance to whizz down slopes in glorified rubber rings, with a lift to drag you to the top!! Speak to your Crystal reps for more information. Please be advised that safety standards with regards to balconies differ in Austria and on occasions you may be allocated a room whereby the balcony is lower than we would expect in the UK.
