CSUF Design 13/113 N. Maki-Dearsan Journal entry/brainstorming/collecting of images/small sketchbook.

More than one idea, ideas developed more than once. *Photo documentation required until the end of the semester. Placement- overlapping, near, touching, not touching, distant. Size, weight, mass, color, 2D & 3D space. Content- Realism, symbolism, elegance, emotions, metaphorical considerations, develop meaning relevant to your current journal entries. Material collecting: paint, surfaces, tape, glue, magazines, stone, wood, plastic, metals, clay, glass, fibers, various boards, cut paper, cutting surface etc. Critique: Class discussions must include contemporary issues, historical context and reference to design movements/artists. You must refer to your idea development and idea execution, library/internet research, thumbnails and sketchbook/journal entries through a discussion of the assigned criteria. *Photo documentation is what you turn in and has a specific format. Project #7 (Week 11) Time: stopped, manipulated, implied. Your concept and idea are focused primarily on reflecting the passage of time, secondly on the concept of what is passing through time, why and the significance of this event. How do you convey, in visual, three-dimensional language, the passage of time? We are not creating YouTube videos, instead, you are using three-dimensional objects and manipulating them and documenting them in a natural element over time. The materials you use and the designs you create with them will define the meaning you are attempting to convey within the confines of defining nest. Be selective about the tree/place you put your sculpture and your continued photo documentation of your artwork. Ideas: The most obvious is the passage of years in the human from birth to death. What passes very slowly? What passes quickly? Ex: being authentically happy passes quickly, but you remember those moments for years. Waiting in line to buy your parking pass takes forever, how can you respond to that (without being specific) but conveying that feeling and experience of waiting for what seems like forever, what materials will last the longest? Materials: glass and anything translucent, the ability to affect clarity or make a surface foggy can help convey change over time (relatively short time). Repetitive objects, objects associated with memory, or objects deconstructed or being constructed, objects from childhood, water, rot, growth and change, objects that are not stationery (they move), build up (appear to grow or reduce), dissolve, mold, progressions of affected surfaces, building up of multiple objects (size changes), unraveling, optical illusions (mirrors, covering things up), fragments either falling apart or coming together, broken bits among whole bits. Make the viewer Think to figure out what you are trying to depict. Consider stretching, twisting, elongating, distorting, deconstructing materials. We will work on these in class. If you cannot complete this in class, you are required to finish this at home. Please note that there are materials and research you will be

required to collect and compile in order to work on this project during class. Your laptop/pad is always good to have during class. Grading: 1. Research/brainstorming/notes. 2. Idea/concept/creativity. 3. Execution/chosen materials. 4. Presentation/specific criteria. 5. Critique-critical thinking and speaking. Write your full name, date, design 13 or 113, design movement/artist referenced, Project number and criteria on the back of each project. Use Sharpie pen if appropriate.
