Thevelocityheadisafactorinfiguringthetotalhead,butthevalueisusuallysmall,andinmostcases
negligible;however,itshouldbeconsideredwhenthetotalheadislowandalsowhenthesuctionliftishigh.
Velocityheadshouldbeconsideredinaccuratetestingalso,asitispartofthetotalheadandconsequently
affectsthedutyaccomplished.
Atable,givingtherelationbetweenvelocityandvelocityhead,appearsinthefollowingand,wherethe
suctionanddischargepipesareofthesamesize,itisonlynecessarytoincludeinthetotalheadthe
velocityheadgeneratedinthesuctionpiping.Ifthedischargepipingisofdifferentsizethanthesuction
piping,whichisoftenthecase,thenitwillbenecessarytousethevelocityinthedischargepipefor
computingthevelocityheadratherthanthevelocityinthesuctionpipe.
Intestingapump,amercurycolumnisgenerallyusedforobtainingdynamicsuctionlift.Thecolumnwill
showthevelocityheadcombinedwithentrancehead,frictionheadandstaticsuctionlift.Onthe
dischargeside,agaugeisusuallyused,butagaugewillnotindicatevelocityhead,andthismust,therefore,
beobtainedeitherbycalculatingthevelocity,ortakingreadingswithaPitotmeter.Inasmuchasthevelocity
variesconsiderablyatdifferentpointsinthecrosssectionofastreamitisimportant,inusingaPitotmeter,
totakeanumberofreadingsatdifferentpointsinthecrosssection.
