Good Morning Im Sam and Im Matthew.

SAM: After our initial walk through meeting with the Nelson we wanted to highlight the educational aspect of the hand built event. Art can be a very abstract concept for kids so in our approach we wanted to help make sculptures more relatable by making connections with objects that are familiar to them.

MATTHEW: We developed a packaged experience that expands on the teaching points and activity that the Nelson is providing at each sculpture, which also furthers the learning beyond the event. Our system is composed of three parts: a map listing scheduled events, matching cards, that acts as the incentive to motivate families to explore the sculpture park, and a box that functions as a container and a nice souvenir that preserves the Nelson logo long after the event.

MATTHEW: So, upon arriving at the Nelson families will receive the packaged experience.

MATTHEW: They are immediately prompted to journey through the sculpture park to collect the matching set of cards and to learn about each sculpture and its materials along the way.

MATTHEW: The map is sealed around the box to build up the experience. Being able to unwrap the map and discover its contents is something that we found kids love. This sparks an anticipation in the kids as they begin their adventure and day of exploration.

SAM: In developing our map we made the decision to move away from a tradition map by simplifying certain elements and exaggerating others such as the sculptures. On user testing day, rstly, we learned that kids rarely follow pathways and secondly, kids WANT TO interact with the map so it needs to appeal to both the parent and child.

SAM: For the parents, the scheduled events, food locations, and thank yous are represented on one side.

SAM: Icons that they directly correspond to the map give location indicators and time references.

Sam: Each box contains six cards that represents the highlighted sculptures. The experience is non-linear allowing families to decided the order of their adventure through the sculpture park. Having multiple cards gives families with more than one kid the ability to split the cards amongst them. We noticed that the kids enjoy directing their own journey and deciding which sculpture theyd like to learn about next.

Sam: While the cards are an independent component, they initiate the exploration. The icons on the cards function as directional reinforcements on the map.

Sam: In addition, directional callouts highlight key activities of the day, prompt discovery, and also act as way-nding helpers while using a playful and friendly tone.

Sam: Heres an example of all three elements in action. The card sparks the search, the map indicates the location, and the callout distinguishes unique and specic way-nding direction.

Matthew: After a fun activity and new found information about the sculpture, each family will receive the corresponding card from the teen guide. We learned from user testing day that kids love collect and keep. The cards are a fun reward for each child as they keep them engaged and encourages them to continue to each sculpture, creating a scavenger hunt for all six cards.

Matthew: After a day of exploring the Nelson Sculpture Park and completing the collection, the kids now have the full-set to play the matching game.

Matthew: Through a fun matching game, the kids are able to pair the materials with the corresponding sculpture.

Matthew: During our user testing we noticed the joy that each kid had when matching and playing with the cards, its something they can do by themselves or with a sibling.

Matthew: These cards are not only an educational tool that kids can play with long after the event, but also a memory of the joyful experience a family has shared together. This constant reminder will encourage families to continue their visits to the Nelson for more fun lled adventures.

Sam: While the box not only functions as a container for the cards, it also allows kids to savor other fun nds from the day!

Sam: Kids love to collect and touch everything they can. The box fosters the creativity and curiosity of each child. Its a place to hold their own found materials that makes each box as unique as every child.

Sam: We emphasize Handbuilt through the focus on education of materiality and construction of the sculptures within the cards. The Logo references Handbuilt in two ways, through the matching and stacking of the cards and also through the layering of different pieces to construct a whole.

Thank You.
