WASHINGTONCardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, offered prayers and sympathy for the victims of the shooting in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Dec. 14. His statement follows: The shooting tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut wrenches the hearts of all people. The tragedy of innocent people dying through violence shatters the peace of all. At this time, we pledge especially our prayerful support to the Diocese of Bridgeport and the community of Newtown as they cope with this almost unbearable sorrow. We pray that the peace that passes understanding be with them as they deal with the injuries they have sustained and with the deaths of their beautiful children. Once again we speak against the culture of violence infecting our country even as we prepare to welcome the Prince of Peace at Christmas. All of us are called to work for peace in our homes, our streets and our world, now more than ever. In the shadow of this shooting, may we know that Gods sacrificial love sustains us and may those pained so deeply by this tragedy experience that care in their own hearts.

Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family. Simple shepherds were the first witnesses to this event. In this poverty heavens glory was made manifest. The Church never tires of singing the glory of this night: The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal And the earth offers a cave to the Inaccessible. The angels and shepherds praise him And the magi advance with the star, For you are born for us, Little Child, God eternal. (CCC, n. 525)
Year of the Eucharist 2-Year ofEucharist 2010-2011 Year of the Faith 2012-2013
e were gathered around the grave of one of the members of our community, commending him to the Lord. When the priest finished the formal prayers, he said I have always thought that one prayer is missing in the funeral rite. If anyone shared our suffering and sorrow it was the mother of Jesus. Heads nodded in agreement, and a few murmured, Thats right. And so, we began to pray together a heartfelt Hail Mary, full of grace.
We have given Mary exalted titles because of her privileged relationship with her Son. Writers have written glowingly about her. These tributes could make it difficult to identify with her. But seeing Mary as a young girl living an ordinary life in the small town of Nazareth begins to bring her closer to us. She could not see the outcome of her decisions anymore than we can. For a sermon on the Blessed Mother to please me and do me any good, I must see her real life, not her imagined life. Im sure her real life was very simple. They show her to us as unapproachable, but they should present her as imitable, bringing out her virtues, saying that she lived by faith, just like ourselves. (St. Therese of Lisieux) Medieval and Renaissance paintings of the Annunciation often show Mary with bowed head and eyes downward as she hears Gods angel. It is a scene taking place in every life. God speaks to us continually with words of love and life. We are listeners trying to respond to Gods invitations. It would be a mistake to view Marys role in our salvation as passive. She made a conscious choice to participate in Gods will for her. Her yes continued as her life unfolded. From our own struggles to follow Gods will in our life, we can imagine what Mary endured.
community of saints. The Holy Spirit, Gods grace, is given to each one of us, consecrating us at our core. We are Gods holy people, and our holiness comes not only from heroic efforts, but mainly from fidelity to everyday life. When Mary is viewed as a sister in faith, other truths about her stand out. Homeless for a time, she had to seek sanctuary for her family. Her Sons behavior caused her confusion and anguish. She saw him imprisoned, and executed. At the foot of the cross, she was a widow, without Joseph to comfort her. Other women were her support. Following Jesus burial, these women witnessed the Resurrection and announced it to the disciples. One theologian noted, They saw angels, where the men saw nothing. Mary most likely was present at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the women and men present. They were all in one place together. (Acts 2:1) The Spirit empowered them equally for their mission. Mary, and the other women who followed Jesus, were among the founders of the early Church. Mary lived on as an elderly woman of wisdom in the Church, the first disciple of her Son. We pray that what Gods grace did in Marys life, God is doing in our lives. In celebrating the work of the Spirit in her life, we have to celebrate that same work in our life. She is blessed, and we are blessed. Mary remains with us in the communion of saints, and she companions us on our journey in life. In the Gospel of St. Luke, Marys beautiful song, the Magnificat, celebrates the work of God in our world. From her own experience, Mary sings of the liberating power of Gods mercy. God has lifted up the lowly and filled the hungry with good things. Marys companionship brings energy to the work of justice. In celebrating our sister in faith, our first response is gratitude to God. Our next response is prophetic living. Her memory challenges us to cooperate with Gods grace and promote the reign of God through deeds of compassion and justice, including justice for women. Father John

Happy New Year! Another year has been gifted to us to do with it what we will. What kind of a year will it be? How can we make it a good year? Many people make New Years Resolutions on January 1st. Statistics tell us that 45% of Americans make Resolutions but 24% of them give up within two weeks. But then there are 76% who make resolutions that are successful. The best advice we found about resolutions is to think in terms of the days resolutions not the years. Following are a few suggestions that each of us can do right here and now that are sure to make your year happier. Learn more about your faith. When the Year of Faith began we were asked to memorize the (newly re-worded) Nicene Creed. The Creed contains a list of all that our Faith contains. Saying it slowly every day, focusing on each line is a good practice. Get involved. Being connected brings along many benefits for us. Being involved, making a contribution gives us a new purpose. Come to a CCW meeting, help with a project - or accept an invitation to involvement in any of the other Parish organizations. Practice Gratitude. Write thank you notes to people who have been helpful to you. Keep a Gratitude Journal, writing down three top things for which you are most grateful each day. Mend some fences. Give a call, go for coffee, talk it out, make peace. Be happy! January 19 and 20 are the days scheduled for the Baby Bottles for Life to help continue the work of Womans Choice Services. Pick one up after Mass, fill it up with loose changes or a check and bring it back to church next weekend. Look for boxes labeled Baby Bottles for Life in the Narthex. It is an easy way to be Pro-Life. Thank you for your help! January 21 Join us for the monthly CCW Community Mass at 8:30. Our prayer intention for the month is that in this Year of Faith, Christians deepen their knowledge of the mystery of Christ and joyfully bear witness to the gift of faith within. January 21 Come for Chili! Start off the New Year by joining us for supper - a bowl of Chili with all the fixings along with a selection of sweets, waiting your enjoyment. After supper, there will be a showing of the movie: October Baby. It is a good film about a young women who, as an infant, lived through a late term abortion. It is a good way to celebrate the Right to Life Month. Come and bring a friend. The Monday meeting will be held in the Parish Life Center and begin at 6:30 p.m.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Consider a Stock or Security Donation to Christ the King Church
Direct gifts of stocks, mutual funds and other assets are simple for parishioners to make and can be very beneficial gifts for both the parish and the parishioner. Parishioner can designate a stock donation as an immediate gift OR use the donation to establish a life-benefit gift such as a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Remainder Trust. Donating appreciated securities to your parish can produce a tax- advantaged charitable deduction for the parishioner. Most securities donated to parishes are either common stocks or mutual funds. For more information please contact Christ the King Church.
A Stewardship Moment
The ultimate aim of Saint Pauls Letter to the Colossians is to teach the community how to deepen its relationship with Christ Jesus. His list of virtues summarizes the ideals of communal stewardship: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. For Paul, practicing these virtues opens our hearts to Christ as individuals and as a worshipping community. This is how the Christian community ought to live. This is how its members should behave in their dealings with others, particularly with fellow believers. As we approach the new year, how might we embrace one of these virtues more fully in order to deepen our relationship with Jesus? We begin to understand Christian Stewardship in our families. We are called to live out the great commandments of loving God and loving our neighbor. The family is God's holy ground in which we strengthen each individual born in his image and likeness. May all in families, always strive to live lives of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and forgiveness as children of God.
*As a reminder our GYM and the Parish Life Center can be rented by parishioners or non parishioners for an event. Please call Javier at 630 -396-6093 for more information.
