What words come to mind when you think of how God describes himself? What words would you use to describe God? Where does fear fit into your description? Do you fear God? Does this idea make you uncomfortable? Why is a person who fears God contrasted with a fool? we want a more manageable Godwe want a God we can question and explain things to him Do you find this to be true? How? Why? o God speaks boldly about himself and he says, fear not, nor be afraid. While God is worth fearing because of how powerful he is because he loves us, we have no reason to fear. Insert your Personal story: when I was a kid I feared my parents, but as I got older, I understood why it was important to fear our parents. If my dad did not want me to touch the stove, he would make sure I understood that I would inflict pain on myself unfortunately a burn is a permanent lesson. You see my fear of God allows him to speak truth into my life. Your life:. Insert your Personal story: when I was in middle school, being a skater was a cool thing. We wore airwalks. It was cool back then. We had a chain wallet. Also a cool thing. But the hallmark of being a skater was actually skating. If you werent, people called you a poser. A poser is someone who dresses like a skater, talked like a skater but they dont skate. I think this happens with Jesus. Personal reflection: Do you follow jesus or are you a poser? Read: Matthew 5-7 Your life:. What stands out in these passages? Jesus tells his followers that when he dies, he will send the spirit to be with them and this is better than having jesus himself do you have trouble believing that? Why? Insert your Personal story: Sometimes I am tempted to think that it was easier for the disciples because they saw Jesus but the truth that Im trying to wrap my head around, is the idea that the same spirit that hovered over the surface of the raging deep at the beginning of creation the same spirit that split the red sea the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same spirit that is with me. What stood out? Read: Matthew 28:18-20 Dig deeper:. Do you feel like youre a part of something bigger? Do you want to be a part of something bigger? Do you feel like you live your life on a mission? What is your mission in this life? Does this mission affect the way that you live? Jesus gives his followers a mission, what does matthew 28:18-20 mean to you? What does fellowship mean to you? Insert your Personal story: as a 28 year old adult man I still need small groups. In fact how I do my small group for high school ministries is the pattern I still use when I meet with my bros. There is something about being with people that encourages me to continue following Jesus. The truth is, even I cant do this on my own. So what you are experiencing now in small groups, will set up the patterns for the rest of your life. I hope that you come to a place to recognize that you cant do this alone. Personal reflection: do you feel like people in church this church this small group has your back? How can you get someone elses back in this small group? How can we get your back? We have to fight for each other. When God sees us he sees us as family are families perfect? Why do we expect the church to be? Read: John 17 Your life:. unity is so strange in our world we live in a world that is so quick to ditch one another, god wants us to live differently React to this statement? What does this look like? What makes this difficult? What does fellowship mean to you? there is something about our unity that makes the message believable Unity does not equal easy. Read: Matthew 17:1-5 Dig deeper:. Has reading the bible seemed like a chore to you? How do you typically approach reading the Bible? How often do you read the Bible? What does the word of God mean to you? Peter says that this desire for scripture is like a child craves milk but more than that, a newborn baby needs milk to survive. We need scripture. Do you feel like you need it? Why is it difficult to commit to reading the Bible? Insert your Personal story: I started doing triathlons. My first week I wanted to die. I couldnt run a mile. It was such a chore. Getting myself motivated day after day for the first week was awful. Something weird started to happen in week 3. I looked forward to running, because I was able to run for 3 miles now. After 6 weeks I started to miss running. Its like this when we read the bible. At first its rough. By week 6, you start to miss it because you start to notice the change its making in your life. Read: Matt. 6:9-13 Dig deeper:. Have you ever had an experience where the only explanation was God? What happened? Have there been things that you prayed for that God didnt answer? Have you ever treated God like he was a big genie in the sky? why do you think we do this? I think this is what frustrates us. Take a closer look at the Lords prayer what stands out? does that change your view of prayer? How? Insert your Personal story: I have a set of miracle blades... miracle blade 3 to be exact. They were some blades I saw on Tv. The guy on the TV said that they could cut through a bolt and stay so sharp that they could filet a tomato. I was sold. Unfortunately, these are some of the worst knives I have ever had in my life. the promise didnt live up to what I thought. The problem is that we treat God like this. We think God works on our terms. He doesnt. you see, prayer does not change God. It changes us. Personal reflection: Do you treat God like a set of miracle blades? Does that cause disappointment? Maybe our disappointment isnt in God but the disappointment is actually in your view of God. Read: Ecclesiastes 5:1-7; james 4:3 Your life:. How do you approach your prayer time with God?
