Date : .. SPM PRACTICE CHAPTER 1 : RATE OF REACTION PAPER 2 Section A Instructions : Answer ALL questions 1.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of four different catalysts on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Each time 0.02 mol of catalyst was added to 20cm3 of 10 volume aqueous hydrogen peroxide. The volume of gas produced was measured at regular time intervals. The results were used to plot the graph as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 Draw a labelled diagram of the apparatus that could be used for these experiments. What is the gas produced in this experiment? State two observations that can be seen on the apparatus when the experiment is carried out . Arrange the effectiveness of the catalyst used in decreasing order. The experiment using copper (II) oxide as the catalyst was left aside until the reaction stopped. Predict the final total volume of gas produced. Suggest two methods, other than using catalyst that can be used to increase the rate of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. How does a catalyst work in increasing the rate of reaction?

4. A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the effect of concentration of sodium thiosulphate (VI) in a conical flask that is placed on a piece of white paper marked with X. 5cm3 of hydrochloric acid is added. The mixture is then shaken. The time taken for the mark X to disappear from sight is recorded. The result is recorded in Table 2.
