ear Students, We are particularly proud of our ongoing construction activities. A walk up Avenue de France will bring you face-to-face with our new student residence, the Edgar de Picciotto Student House, and with the construction site of the Maison de la paix, the Institutes marvellous new home, which is scheduled for completion by autumn 2013. Some of you are fortunate enough to be housed in the Student House and enjoy its exquisite view of the Salve. In addition, many of you will be able to profit from the Maison de la paixs splendid two-storey library, the large auditorium, new classroom space, and a friendly cafeteria with an adjoining terrace, perfect for meeting up with colleagues and friends. We are looking forward to completing a number of other projects, including the Portail des Nations, which will result in the rehabilitation of Parc Rigot and will constitute an important link in our new campus that will stretch from the United Nations to Lake Geneva. I am delighted to welcome you into our vibrant community and wish you a successful year, defined by decisive intellectual growth and passionately engaged study.

Welcome to the Graduate Institute! To those of you who are joining us for the first time I am delighted you decided to come to Geneva. To those of you returning for the 2012/2013 academic year welcome back! I am looking forward to sharing the excitement of research and learning with you. You are part of an extraordinarily accomplished and highly diverse student body. Our rate of admission this year is 30 percent. And you make up a decidedly international crowd, with a little less than 18 percent from Switzerland; the others from Europe (35 percent), the Americas (26 percent), Asia (13 percent), and Africa (7 percent). The diversity of our student body is unmatched by comparable institutions and profoundly enriches our teaching and research. At the Graduate Institute we continuously strive to improve our offerings and seek to adapt our curricula to the realities of a changing world. Our incoming students in the Master of International Affairs and Master of Development Studies programmes this autumn will benefit from a new curriculum that more clearly defines core courses, anchors tracks in gateway courses, and puts a stronger emphasis on methods training. Some of our disciplinary master students have been admitted into our PhD programme through a new fast track mechanism. They are beginning to take classes at the PhD level in spring while at the same time completing their masters degree. Some of our PhD students have declared minors and are beginning to take courses outside their main field of study, gaining valuable cross-disciplinary expertise that will creatively enrich their research.

REQUESTS FOR CHANGES IN THE STUDY PROGRAMMES If you wish to change study programmes, please refer to the Academic Regulations and Implementation Guidelines.

ATTENDANCE The Institutes pedagogical approach requires regular class attendance which may be monitored. Regular attendance and active participation in classes are considered by the faculty in the final assessment. The majority of courses and seminars are held in the Rothschild, Voie Creuse and Rigot buildings, which are all within roughly a 10 minute walk of each other. Students are requested to arrive in the classroom a few minutes prior to the beginning of class. The use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited during classes, seminars and examinations; audio and visual ringtones must be switched off. The use of portable computers is authorised as long as it does not disrupt the course.

EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR COURSES For all courses, student coursework will be evaluated based on criteria defined and communicated by the faculty at the beginning of the semester taking into account the number of students, the type of course and the objectives set. Methods of evaluation generally include one or several written or oral examinations. Evaluation is based on a grading system ranging from 1 to 6 with quarter point increments. Only a grade equal or superior to 4 will result in the awarding of the corresponding number of ECTS credits. The criteria for evaluation and the attribution of credits are governed by the Academic Regulations, Implementation Guidelines and curricula, which are binding.

BOLOGNA PROCESS AND ECTS CREDITS The Bologna Process was put in place to create a harmonised European higher education system by making national academic and quality assurance standards comparable and compatible throughout Europe through the introduction of a European-wide system of credits, the ECTS. Switzerland and the Graduate Institute adhere to this system. These credits represent the number of hours of study required for the successful completion of a course within any given semester. One credit is equivalent to approximately 25 study hours. In principle the master programmes, a semester is equivalent to 30 ECTS credits.
