OBJECTIVES

Practical application of Chapter 5(scale drawing) in Mathematics Textbook

Understand that ratios are used to create scale models of buildings and structures

To gain knowledge and understand how to calculate scale using ratio

The ability to spot flaws in scaling and make recommendations

Understand the principles of ratio and apply these principles in the solution of problems as a group

SCALE DRAWING

A scale drawing is a drawing that represents a real object.

The scale of the drawing is the ratio of the size of the drawing to the actual size of the object.

A map or house plan cannot be of the same size as the area it represents. So, the measurements are scaled down to make it a size that can be conveniently used by users such as architects and homeowners.

A scale drawing of a building has the same shape as the real building that it represents but a different size. Builders use scaled drawings to make buildings.

Scaling is a drawing method used to enlarge or reduce a drawing in size while keeping the proportions of the drawing the same.

Scaling is used to either:

reduce the drawing in size so that it will fit onto the page, or

enlarge the drawing in size so that all required details are clearly visible.

Even

though

the

drawing

itself

may

be

reduced in size or drawn at an enlarged size on the page, all dimensioning on the drawing

should reflect the correct sizes of the item being drawn.

CHOICE OF HOME

The groups consensus was that we would use one of our members homes which had only one floor. This left us with an option between Deirdres and Hutashnis. We decided on Hutashnis because ideally she lives in Caroni and Deirdre lives in distant Chaguanas.

Thankfully, Hutashnis parents gave their approval for our visit to their home. This occurred on February 10, 2008 at 12 noon with everyone being punctual. We were able to measure each room without any major hindrances.

LOCATION OF ROOMS

The house is a one storey building. The total number of rooms in the house is 7. The breakdown is as follows: 1 living room 1 dining room 1 kitchen 1 study 1 workshop 1 toilet and bath 3 bedrooms

LOCATION OF ROOMS - ADVANTAGES

The workshop, living and dining rooms are in very close proximity to the washroom.

The kitchen has three (3) doors. One facilitates direct access to the front of the house and the other two (2) lead to either sides of the house.

There is the convenience of a backdoor which leads to the back of the house. This might prove to be quite useful in the event of an emergency such as fire.

The study is next to the kitchen so if hunger strikes one will not have a long walk to find food.

LOCATION OF ROOMS

- DISADVANTAGES

The study and all three (3) bedrooms are some distance away from the bathroom.

One has a long walk to get from the living room to the kitchen.

The living room has only one door.

The living and dining rooms are small.

There are corridors throughout the house which means that persons have to walk a greater distance to get to other rooms.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

The bedrooms should be closer to the washroom.

There should be at least one more toilet.

There should be fewer corridors.

There should be more exits.

GROUP SCHEDULE

All members performed their tasks willingly.

Discussions were always fruitful and there were no rifts among members. All meetings were held in the library and members were reliable and punctual.

CONCLUSION We learnt the following: All about scale drawing and its importance.

That everything one draws must be drawn accurately to some scale, it is essential that one become thoroughly familiar with scale drawing.

A scale is a ruler marked off conveniently to represent proportionally larger or smaller

distances. The plans of a house, for example, are usually drawn to the scale.

How to use measuring instruments such as a compass, ruler, set square and measuring tape to measure height, length and width of rooms and to also to draw them to scale.

That measurements must be accurate. For example, if there is a discrepancy in the measurement taken for the length of a room, then if one is tiling, the wrong number of tiles might be purchased which can lead to a waste in time and money.

The importance of strategically positioning the rooms of a house in order to ease congestion, create space, have freedom of movement, easy access to washroom, kitchen and the outside.

That co-operation amongst group members is essential to the success of any group project.
