6340 Switch Node

Family of flexible SDH multiplexers - from 2 Mbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s

Overview 6340 Switch Node product family consists of STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16 level add/drop multiplexers and cross-connects that support 2, 34 and 45 Mbit/s PDH interfaces as well as ATM STM-1 UNI interfaces. 6340 Switch Node product family is ideal for metro and regional networks, but can also be applied in the access network or as part of a backbone network. 6340 Switch Node product family is used to design SDH networks for transport of telephony and data traffic. The traditional application for SDH transport networks is to carry telephony (POTS and ISDN), but 6340 Switch Node is ideal for many other purposes. The increasing demand for IP and other data communication applications is well supported by the STM-1 ATM interface and switch, which makes it possible to have an ATM network on the same physical network that is used for telephony. The video on demand market is growing and 6340 Switch Node product supports the 34 Mbit/s and 45 Mbit/s interfaces frequently used for video encoders and decoders. It is also possible to design full mobile networks with 6340 Switch Node providing the SDH transport layer. Benefits 6340 Switch Node provides a flexible optical transport solution designed for growth. It has a modular structure that makes it possible to configure add/drop multiplexers and cross-connects from the same hardware platform. Since the building blocks are common for the applications, spare parts, service and maintenance costs are reduced to a minimum. A full SDH network with rings and nodes at STM-1 to STM16 level can be configured from 6340 Switch Node product family providing the operator with a flexible and upgradeable network. As an example 6340 Switch Node provides seamless upgrade from ADM1 to ADM16. The continuous availability necessary in a high quality network can be obtained by using 6340 Switch Node network elements with no single point of failure. Applications A typical 6340 Switch Node application is for STM-4 and STM-16 rings with nodes that drop off a mixture of 2 Mbit/s and STM-1 signals. Another application is as termination point and interconnection point for a number of STM rings or for direct inter-working between STM-1 and STM-4 rings. With the 6340 Switch Node configured as a local cross-connect, it is possible to groom traffic from multiple rings. 6340 Switch Node is capable of dropping an entire STM-16 worth of traffic, which is in demand for headends and in major nodes. Features 6340 Switch Node is based on a cross-connect module with a 48 port VC-4 cross-connect and a 16 port VC-12/VC-3 cross-connect (corresponding to 1008 x VC-12 ports). With this connectivity it is possible to implement an ADM4 with 504 x 2 Mbit/s or an SDXC 4/1 with 16 x STM-1 interfaces that have full lower-order connectivity. Considering the capacity, the 6340 Switch Node is a very compact system. An ADM16 with drop of 126 x 2 Mbit/s is implemented in just one 450 mm high ETSI subrack. This compact single subrack solution can then be expanded with up to four subracks, without traffic interruption or hardware redundancy. 6340 Switch Node systems are managed by the open NM2100 network management system that provides automatic path set-up and grooming, synchronisation, network views, practical GUIs for equipment configuration and per path performance monitoring. The management of the 6340 Switch Node can be performed from a local craft terminal, from an element manager or from a network manager.

Cross-connect capacity exhaustion and consequent upgrade are delayed by applying the unique 6340 Switch Node feature of subdeployed lines. The number of STM-1 interfaces possible on a cross-connect is tripled by using STM-1 signals with 1/3 payload whilst maintaining full SDH management of each interface. The 6340 Switch Node is a standardised SDH product developed according to the ITU and ETSI recommendations.
