CHAPTER 5 : UNDERSTANDING INPUT & OUTPUT WHAT IS INPUT?

Input : any data or instructions entered into a memory of computer Input device : any hardware components that allow users to enter instructions or data into a computer. Mostly used : keyboard and mouse(pointing device) KEYBOARD AND POINTING DEVICES. Keyboard Input device that contains keys users press to enter data and instructions into a computer Keyboards for mobile computers and mobile devices : smaller and have fewer keys Mouse Pointing device that fits comfortably under palm of hand (optical, laser, air, wireless mouse) Trackball Stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side. Touchpad Small, flat, rectangular pointing device thats sensitive to pressure and motion (ala, y kat laptop tu) Pointing stick Pressure-sensitive pointing device shaped like a pencil eraser that is between keys on a keyboard TOUCH SCREENS AND TOUCH SENSITIVE PADS Touch screens Touch-sensitive display devices Touch-sensitive pads Input device that enables users to scroll through and make options. Ex: portable media player Pen input With pen input, touch a stylus or digital pen on a flat surface to write, draw, and make selections. OTHER TYPES OF INPUT Other input for smart phones Bluetooth set, wireless keyboard, etc Game controller Input device that directs movements and actions of on-screen objects Gamepad, joystick and wheel, light guns, dance pad, motion-sensing game controller, others Digital cameras Mobile device that allows user to take pics and store the photographed image digitally instead of traditional film. Basic types : studio cameras, field cameras, point-and-shoot cameras Voice input Process of entering input by speaking into a microphone Audio input

Video input Process of capturing full motion of images and storing them on computers storage medium. Webcam, video conferencing Scanner and reading devices Save users time by capturing data directly from source document Optical scanner, optical reader (OCR n OMR), bar code reader, RFID reader, magnetic strip card reader, MICR reader Biometric input Technology of authenticating persons identity by verifying personal characteristics Fingerprint readers, face recognition, signature verification etc Terminals Computer with limited processing power, enables users to send data to and/or receive information from a host computer. POS, ATM, DVD kiosk WHAT IS OUTPUT? Output : data that has been processed into useful form. Output device : hardware that conveys information to one or more people. Ex : display devices DISPLAY DEVICES Output device that usually conveys texts, graphics, and video information. MONITORS LCD monitor and LCD screens Desktop that uses liquid crystal display LCD technology and quality Port and LCD monitor Plasma monitor Display device that us gas plasma technology CRT monitor Desktop monitor that contains cathode ray tube PRINTERS Nonimpact printers Forms characters w/o actually striking the paper. Inkjet printers A type of nonimpact that spraying tiny drops of liquid into a paper Photo printer Color printer that produces photo-lab-quality pictures Laser printers High-speed, high-quality nonimpact Multifunction peripherals All-in-one device, single devices that multifunction

Thermal printer Generates images by pushing electrically heated pins against heat-sensitive paper Mobile printer Small, light-weighed, battery-powered printer Plotter n large format printer Sophisticated printers used to produce high quality drawings Impact printers Striking mechanism against an inked ribbon paper Dot matrix printer n line printer OTHERS OUTPUT DEVICES Speakers, headphone, earbuds Data projectors Interactive whiteboards INPUT AND OUTPUT FOR PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED USERS American with Disabilities Act (ADA)
