Solution: Follow the step-by-step instructions to solve the problem: 1- Open a new case.
Problem 2. Production of Bean Oil. In the production of bean oil, 100 kg/hr beans containing 13.0 % (mass) oil and 87% (mass) solids are ground and fed to an extractor at 25C and 1 atm along with a recycled stream of liquid n-hexane. The feed ratio is 3 kg hexane/kg beans. The ground beans are suspended in the liquid and essentially all of the oil beans are extracted into the hexane. The extractor effluent is then passed to a filter. The filter cake contains 75% (mass) bean solids and the balance is the sum of bean oils and hexane, the latter two are in the same ratio in which they emerge from the extractor. The filter cake is discarded and the liquid filtrate is fed to a heated evaporator in which the hexane is vaporized and the oil remains as a liquid. The oil is stored in drums and shipped. The hexane vapor is substantially cooled and condensed and the liquid hexane condensate is recycled to the extractor. - Estimate the properties of the bean solids and bean oil; - Choose the proper property model and justify your choice; - Simulate the process; - Calculate the required fresh hexane fed to the process.
