Scholarship Application Guidelines for High School Seniors Graduating June 2013
1) Eligibility Requirements: a) The applicant must be a high school student who will complete his or her high school education during the 2012-2013 school year. b) Applicants must be planning to continue their education at an accredited college or university or vocational program within the 2013-2014 academic-year. c) This scholarship is open to any graduating Zama American High School student, or any graduating high school student in the Zama community, who is a dependent of an active duty military member (all services), or the dependent living with a SOFA sponsored employee based at Camp Zama, Japan. 2) Criteria for Selection: a) Applicants will be judged on an essay, scholastic achievement and extracurricular activities, to include community service. b) Applicants remain anonymous during the application process. All personal information, including name, address, and sponsors information will be removed from the applications prior to judging. c) Student application evaluations are based on academic/scholastic honors, work/volunteer history, extracurricular activities, GPA, test scores and the essay. d) Please be aware that not all applications will automatically be awarded scholarship money. The number of scholarships awarded and the amounts of each scholarship award will be determined by the ZaCSA Scholarship Committee, based on the funds available for the year and the merit of the applications. 3) Limitations: a) The ZaCSA Scholarship may be used at any accredited four-year college or university, vocational school, community or junior college. It will be used to defray the cost of tuition and university sponsored room and board. It may not be used to defray the cost of books, fees, computer costs or other accessory expenses. b) The applicant will not be eligible to receive this award if at any time he or she accepts an appointment to any military service academy, or accepts any other full four-year scholarship. c) Award money will be mailed to the recipients college in the form or a check payable to the school he or she will be attending. Please note: Payments will not be made directly to the student. d) Students must have their college or university send official verification of enrollment (on school letterhead) directly to the ZaCSA Scholarship Chairperson to claim their scholarship monies.
e) Winners will also be asked to provide payment instructions, to include the address of the Finance Office of the University. f) If the scholarship recipient fails to attend the fall term following high school graduation, he or she must immediately notify the ZaCSA Scholastic Awards Chairperson. g) The recipient of the scholarship agrees to remain in school for at least one academic year. In the event the student leaves school before the end of the full academic year, the ZaCSA Scholastic Awards Chairperson must be notified and any remaining amount of the scholarship forfeited. h) All award money must be applied by January 31, 2014, or all funds for the scholarship will be forfeited. 4) Application Instructions: a) Applications must be typed and double-spaced. Please use the format provided. Submit only one transcript. Do not submit letters of recommendation or acceptance letters. b) Please be sure to contact the Zama American High School Guidance Counselor early in your application process to allow enough time to gather official transcripts, GPA and other pertinent material. c) Follow all instructions carefully and meet all deadlines. Failure to follow these instructions or failure to meet the required deadlines will disqualify the applicants packet from consideration. d) The student and the students sponsor must each sign the completed application. e) All applicants will be notified of the final results. f) Direct any questions you may have to ZaCSA Scholastic Awards Chairperson at scholarship@zacsa.org 5) Hints and Tips a) Be sure to follow all instructions carefully. b) Meet all stated deadlines and have all necessary signatures. c) Failure to follow these instructions or failure to meet the required deadlines will disqualify the applicants packet from consideration. Have someone read your essays to catch any problems with clarity, grammar, etc. d) Have someone review your entire application packet to make sure all instructions have been followed and all necessary items are included. e) Be sure to make a copy of your entire application packet to keep for your own records.
