COURSE OUTLINE I. Description This course consolidates the fundamentals established in Architectural Construction 1 & 2 (AR1326 & AR2326), through a systematic and integrative consideration of building technologies in the design and construction of buildings. The significance of building technologies integration has been increasing in modern construction environment. The core of the course is placed on understanding how building materials and systems are related and assembled each other and how the building systems are designed and detailed. Furthermore, the course considers the details required for the integration of building systems, such as structure, mechanical and electric services, exterior and interior. Extensively, codes of practice, such as Fire Safety, considerations on sustainable environment will be addressed. The goal is to integrate those technologies for human well being in symbiotic manner. Precedent case studies, a series of construction site/manufacturer visits will be used to illustrate the concepts discussed. The building technologies learning will be suitably augmented by providing knowledge on construction and construction systems applicable to design studios. II. Objectives 1. To be aware of how building technologies play significant roles for decision-makings in architectural design. 2. To understand the properties of building materials in relationships with their applications for various building systems. 3. To be capable to apply knowledge gained through lectures and site visits into your design project adequately and beneficially.

<Assignment 3: Individual Technology Integration> The AR3323 Assignment 3 is fully integrated with your AR3102 Design 6 studio project submission. Each student will be required to proceed with the individual technology integration assignment under the guidance of each studio tutor. The integration exercise is as follows: 1. Overall structural system axonometric. Propose a clear and logical overall structural system in axonometric format, in order to achieve and enhance your intended construction method, space circulation layout and environmental strategy. It should be executed to demonstrate how the technology integration could enhance the design, aesthetic and performance of the building. The emphases are the same as the assignment 2, namely Construction, Structure, Environment and Circulation (Pls. refer the Assignment 2 for the details). 2. Annotated 2D section drawings (or Sectional perspective). Select partial section of the building (1:20 scale) where there are potential opportunities for you to show in 2D construction of the external facade, from ground to roof level, will form a competent envelope system. The section must be selected with the approval of your design studio tutor. Consideration should be given to 1) ground interface, 2) exterior to interior interface, 3) materials for cladding, 4) detailing, and environmental control including 5) sun-shading elements and 6) protection by the roof. Good annotated 2D section drawings not only indicate relationships among components, but also to indicate space between components very clearly. 3. <OPTION> Key Detail Drawings (2D / Axonometric). Pick up a few key details, which strongly influence quality of your architectural space, or construction, ex.) Openings, staircase, facade, etc. Then to study its critical dimensions in 1:1 to 1:5 scale. This is important, especially when you intend to use special materials or construction methods in unique and non-conventional design. Unlikely the annotated 2D section drawings, the key detail drawings indicate purely relationships between physical components, which have significant control on building function (weather proofing, structural continuity, etc.) or visual impression (glass/timber clad faade, etc.). This assignment 3 is not intended to be stand-alone descriptive presentation, but it should form an integrated part of the design submission. The submission will be evaluated under both AR3323 (this module) and AR3102 Design 6. It is hoped that this assignment will not only enhance the design projects but also elevate each design to a more competent and comprehensive level. 4

The quality of representation and annotation must be clear enough to explain ideas and intentions without an oral presentation as such it will play a significant role in the assessment. Assessment Criteria: -Depth of the technical knowledge and design creativity/sensitivity in the use of appropriate building materials, components, and systems. -Quality and accuracy of visual representation of the design proposals. -Depth of understanding of technology integration in design. -Appropriate use of technical terminology.
