2. The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth - 1620


Phase de dcouverte en deux temps : - Reprages visuels partir dun tableau (mthodologie de la description de limage + formulation dune hypothse) - Comprhension crite de courts textes explicatifs des principaux lments. a) Picture dictation

Un lve qui na pas vu le document va au tableau. Il doit chercher reproduire limage partir des descriptions du reste de la classe.

La classe est divise en groupe de 4 lves. Un lve du groupe reoit le texte A, un autre le texte B, etc Ils ont 5 minutes pour lire le texte et rdiger une question sur une information apporte par le document. Aprs 5 minutes chacun fait passer son texte son voisin et recommence le travail de lecture et de rdaction dune question. Au moment de la mise en commun tous les lves de la classe nont plus que les questions sous les yeux quils posent toute la classe. A Thanksgiving presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive the brutal winter. - Plymouth Rock is the traditional site of disembarkation of the Mayflower (name of the ship) Pilgrims who founded Plymouth Colony in 1620, in what would become the United States of America. It is an important symbol in American history. C - In the United States the word "Pilgrims Fathers" refers to the English settlers of New England, who sailed on the Mayflower (name of the ship) to New England, where they founded Plymouth Colony in SE Massachusetts (1620) D - Native Americans (American Indians) are people from any of the many groups who were already living in North America before Europeans arrived. They comprise a large number of distinct tribes, states, and ethnic groups c) Lets Recap!

US border fence signed into law


US President George W Bush has signed a controversial bill into law that will pay for a 700mile fence (1,125km) fence along the border with Mexico. The barrier, equipped with hi-tech surveillance equipment, will be built in areas where many illegal immigrants cross over into the United States. Mr Bush has also suggested a temporary guest worker programme to allow immigrants to work legally in the US. [] Under the new law, around $1.2bn will be spent over the coming year on the border, which will be built on remote and inhospitable border areas in the south west of the country. [] There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the US. An estimated 1.2 million illegal immigrants were arrested last year trying to cross into the US along the border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Supporters of the fence have said it will be a crucial tool to fight illegal immigration - which is expected to be a key issue in November's mid-term elections. But critics of the scheme say it will force illegal immigrants to cross somewhere else. Mexico has also said the fence will badly affect relations with the US. The outgoing Mexican President, Vicente Fox, has called the fence shameful, and compared it to the Berlin Wall.

7. Final test (2/2 - Speaking test)


Objective: To explain the cartoon to someone who sees it for the first time and who doesnt know about the question of immigration in America. Pupils must communicate in English. This is not a question and answer test: they must do the speaking. 1. Explain what sort of a document it is. 2. Say where Plymouth Rock is situated and explain why it is famous. 3. Say who the people in the boat are and where they come from and the name of their ship. 4. Say who the people on the beach are and how they feel. 5. Explain why they are building a fence and say why they are unhappy about the immigrants coming. 6. Explain the reference to the fence on the Mexico/ America border. 7. Say why some Americans dont like to see a lot of Mexicans arrive in the USA. 8. Explain that all Americans have immigrant ancestry except the Native American Indians. 9.
