La premire apparition de Charles Aznavour la tlvision date de 1955, les diffusions se font alors en noir et blanc. Inclus La bohme, La mamma, Il te suffisait que je taime, Fanny, Tu tlaisses aller, For me formidable, Jai perdu la tte, Les comdiens, Je mvoyais dj, Emmenez-moi Au cours des annes 50 et 60, un grand nombre dmissions de varits verront le jour et inviteront Charles Aznavour pour ses prestations scniques puissantes et mouvantes. Auteur talentueux, fin compositeur, Charles Aznavour tait et reste toujours un immense homme de scne. Un sens aigu du geste qui marque, la force du port de tte, la sobrit dans llgance ont fait du petit homme un grand showman. On vient autant voir Aznavour que lcouter, tant son rpertoire est connu du monde entier. Il tait logique que la jeune tlvision ouvre ses crans au chanteur dont les dbuts ne furent pourtant gure faciles. La premire apparition de Charles date de 1955, soit six ans seulement aprs la cration de la RTF (Radiodiffusion et Tlvision Franaise). Les diffusions se font alors en noir et blanc. Il faudra attendre 1967 pour voir apparatre la couleur sur nos rcepteurs, grce la deuxime chaine, ne quelques annes auparavant. Quimporte. Au cours des annes cinquante et de la premire moiti de la dcennie suivante, un grand nombre dmissions de varits verront le jour : Trente-six chandelles, cre et prsente par Jean Nohain, Rendez-vous avec ..., signe Marcel Cravenne (le frre du crateur des Csars), o un interprte pouvait prsenter plusieurs oeuvres de son rpertoire en une seule diffusion et Discorama anime par Denise Glaser, un face face intimiste avec un artiste o se mlaient chansons et confidences de linvit. Charles sera au cours des annes soixante-dix, de nombreuses fois, convi sur les plateaux de Cadet Rousselle, prsente par linoxydable Guy Lux. La chanson, par lentremise de la tlvision peut avoir galement une action caritative. Bien avant que ne soient relays les festivals de musique destins venir en aide tous les dshrits (Bangladesh, Sahel, Ethiopie), mais aussi aux victimes du 11 septembre 2001, une mission stait btie en hte au lendemain de la catastrophe de Frjus, qui suite leffondrement dun barrage en dcembre 1959, fit plus de quatre cent morts. Charles-augrand-coeur rpondra prsent et interprtera quatre chansons pour SOS Frjus.
De grands ralisateurs seront les artisans discrets de ces productions, faites parfois dans les hasardeuses conditions du direct. Citons Stellio Lorenzi, Claude Barma, Raoul Sangla, Jeanine Guyon, Franois Chatel, Roger Pradines, Georges Folgoas, Jean-Pierre Spiero, Alexandre Tarta et Jean-Paul Carrre, des noms que nous verrons fleurir sur bon nombre de gnriques. Ds les annes soixante, Charles fut omniprsent sur le petit cran. On ne compte plus le nombre de fois o il fut linvit du rendez-vous dominical Tl dimanche , ses multiples apparitions dans Bienvenue, un rendez-vous organis et produit par Guy Bart, o se croisaient artistes de tous bords, chanteurs, peintres, architectes, crivains et mannequins venus de lagence Catherine Harl. Aznavour, ouvert aux nouvelles tendances ne fut pas insensible la vague yy. Avec son beau-frre, Georges Garvarentz, il crivit La plus belle pour aller danser pour Sylvie Vartan et Retiens la nuit pour Johnny Hallyday. On le vit donc frquemment des missions connotes jeunes comme Tilt Magazine, ou Podium 70. Avec Georges Gutary, il interprtera Avec en 1965, et Love Me Please Love Me en 1967 avec Michel Polnareff. La mme anne, en duo avec Claude Franois, il chantera Viens au creux de mon paule. De nombreux show tlviss lui seront consacrs tels, Rendez-vous avec en 1959, puis Charles Aznavour entre nous, aussi un Spcial Aznavour ralis par Jacques Audoir en 1969 ou encore ce Tl dimanche du 7 fvrier 1971 au cours duquel, il interprtera pas moins de sept chansons. Nul nignore non plus limpact de lhomme de scne, dont la puissance ne peut se limiter qu lespace restreint du petit cran. De nombreux extraits des concerts publics de Charles, sur les plus grands plateaux parisiens - entre autres sa merveilleuse performance en 1972 lOlympia - ne font que confirmer sa capacit emmener son audience au pays des merveilles . Charles est lhomme des planches, le comdien, comme il la si bien dcrit dans lune de ses chansons, le saltimbanque lumineux dun thtre sans cesse renouvel. Apprciant les duos, Charles invitera entre autres, au fil des enregistrements, France Gall, Sylvie Vartan, Liza Minnelli, etc. Sur TF1, il inaugure en 1976 Numro Un, un show tlvis produit par le couple lgendaire form par les Carpentier. Au cours des dcennies suivantes, il rpondra aux invitations de Michel Drucker pour Champs-Elyses et plus tard Vivement dimanche, de Jacques Martin pour Lcole des fans, de Laurent Ruquier, etc. et sera galement son tour linvit des missions spciales consacres aux autres artistes parmi lesquels Demis Roussos, Omar Sharif, Nana Mouskouri, pour nen citer que quelques uns ! Ce coffret serait incomplet sil ne se faisait pas lcho des extraordinaires capacits scniques de Charles Aznavour. A ses formidables interprtations de Je rentre chez moi et Parce que lors de ses reprsentations au Palais des Congrs en 1987, rpondent, dans ce mme lieu, celles de 1994, avec entre autres lmouvant La Mamma. Un an aprs son premier Palais des Congrs, lanne 1988 (le 7 dcembre) est le thtre dune catastrophe naturelle qui va meurtrir lArmnie dans ses chairs. Un tremblement de terre dvastateur au nord de lArmnie fera des milliers de victimes : la ville de Spitak est entirement limine, la ville de Gyumri (anciennement Leninakan) nest plus quun monceau de gravats...et dautres destructions significatives touchent la ville dErevan et bien dautres. Indfectiblement proche de la terre de ses anctres, Charles Aznavour fonde avec Lvon Sayan lassociation Aznavour pour lArmnie . Ils feront appel 90 chanteurs et comdiens franais pour enregistrer la chanson Pour toi Armnie qui se vendra plus dun million et demi dexemplaires et dont les bnfices seront redistribus aux victimes. LArmnie reconnaissante, inaugurera une place son nom Erevan et une statue le reprsentant sera rige Gyumri, picentre du sisme. Son oeuvre est universelle et intemporelle. Infatigable globe-trotter, il foulera nouveau les planches du Carnegie Hall en 1995, scne mythique new-yorkaise accueillant les plus grandes stars internationales. ian hunter Youre Never Alone With A Schizophrenic

Youre Never Alone with a Schizophrenic was originally released worldwide in April 1979 on Chrysalis Records and was Ians first release with the label. The former Mott the Hoople front man had launched his solo career in 1975. This amazing album is now available as a deluxe re-mastered package containing the original LP with bonus tracks plus an extra disc featuring unreleased live performances of the period. The celebration is fully justified on three counts - 1) because this remains Ians biggest selling international solo album, 2) because the live tapes have remained rare treasures in Hunter folklore until now and 3) because the songs are just SO good. The album title came about when Ians musical partner (former Mott the Hoople and David Bowie guitarist) Mick Ronson found the slogan Youre Never Alone With A Schizophrenic scrawled on a New York toilet wall. Mick proposed that they use the phrase for Ians record and then decided to retain it. So Hunter traded the title for a joint writing credit on the song Just Another Night.

Bob Wayne quit school at an early age and ended up becoming a roadie for Hank Williams III. It was there that he started writing some Outlaw Country songs of his own. While on the road, Hank and his band noticed that Bobs songs werent too bad, not too bad at all. Soon after, Andy Gibson (Hanks steel guitar player) and Joe Buck (Hanks upright bass player) invited Bob to Nashville to record his debut release, Blood To Dust. Not only was Bob opening the show, but Hank also ended up inviting him to play guitar and sing with him in a Pentagram tribute between his bands country and metal sets. Joyce DiDonatos capacity for characterization is as astounding as the range and flexibility of her voice. She can charm as a good girl, seduce as a bad girl, and slip believably into the trousers of a hero. This new collection showcases DiDonatos multi-faceted art and the wealth of opportunities open to a mezzo-soprano by presenting her as different characters, both male and female, from the same opera or from different musical treatments of the same story. The program features several roles that DiDonato has sung on stage such as Rossinis Cenerentola, Bellinis Romeo, and Mozarts Cherubino. The flip sides of those characters are roles that have not featured in her repertoire: the Prince from Massenets; the Nurse from Berliozs Romo et Juliette, and both Chrubin (from Massenets sequel to Le nozze di Figaro) and Susanna. The Figaro connection continues with an excerpt from Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rosina, of course, later becomes Countess Almaviva), while other operas on the program, from the Renaissance to late Romanticism, include La clemenza di Tito (Sesto and Vitellia), Faust, La Damnation de Faust, Mefistofele, Orphe et Eurydice, Orfeo and Orphe aux Enfers.

EMI Classics is proud to release the complete EMI recordings Samson Franois. This exclusive 36-CD box set includes all his early recordings - mainly devoted to Frdric Chopin. The height of Samsons art is probably to be found in the ballades (recorded between 26 and 28 October 1954, and first issued as an immensely successful 10 LP) and the dazzling interpretation of the nocturnes (recorded in May and June 1966). Samsons life was abruptly cut short in 1970, at age 46. Neither as pupil nor as teacher did he have any interest in pedagogy. Was this because he chose to keep his distance from all relationship or dependency? Regardless, there is something of the stateless person in Samsons unique pianistic style.

Their voices moved the greatest composers of the time to increasingly write for tenors, a move from the Castrati, which had dominated opera since 1600. Now, three centuries since this trios brilliance encouraged a surge of new repertoire for the vocal range, world renowned tenor Ian Bostridge celebrates their legacy with his stunning new release, Three Baroque Tenors. This recording features works by the masters of the age, including six world premier recordings of arias by Caldara, Conti, Gasparini, Handel, Scarlatti and Vivaldi. Three Baroque Tenors is an overdue homage to this neglected musical evolution and the men who inspired it. It illustrates both Bostridges gift for interpreting repertoire from this period, as previously heard on his Great Handel recording, and his skills as a historian.
