Dance Therapy In the Mood of Dancing Description:

Dance therapy can be defined as the healing system that makes use of movement and dance, on psychotherapeutic level, to treat emotional, cognitive, social, behavioral and physical problems. It aims at the connection between the body and the mind, with the overall well-being of a person being the core objective. The therapy works on the premise that movements and emotions are directly related to each other and by affecting the former, we have can have a positive effect on the latter as well. Apart from dance therapy, it is also known by the name of dance movement therapy and movement psychotherapy. Stages of Dance Therapy: Preparation: It is also known as the warm-up stage, in which safety is established Incubation: This is the relaxed stage, in which a person lets go of his conscious control and his movements become symbolic Illumination: in this stage, the meanings become evident, which can have positive as well as negative effects Evaluation: In the last stage, the significance of the whole process is discussed with the person undergoing it, after which the therapy comes to an end

Therapeutic Value: Dance movement therapy strengthens the body/mind connection through body movements to improve both the mental and physical well-being of individuals. Dance/Movement therapy is an expressive therapy in which people can make personal statements about their thoughts and feelings in a non-verbal form. They are subsequently encouraged to put this into words.

Objectives: To be able to encourage the different kinds of patient in the ward to join the Therapy. To be able to allow the patients express their thoughts and feelings through the movement of the body To be able to improve the physiological, emotional and psychological well- being by improving the mood and relieving the stress of the patient

The dance therapy session will be held at Pavillion 10 of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH), Nueve de Febrero St., Mauway, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.

Materials: Sound system for the music extension cords Music for the dance: Gangnam Style

Procedures: 1. The therapist would introduce the activity. 2. Then the patients would be asked to perform a warm up exercise. 3. After the warm up, the therapists would begin to teach the simple dance steps. 4. The patients, together with the therapists, would perform the dance. Evaluation: The patients would be given the chance to express themselves in doing their own dance or the dance that was taught. The patients would articulate their feelings after the dance therapy.

Positive Reinforcement: The therapist would give a compliment for patients who are able to follow and participate actively in the activity. The patient would be given a warm of applause by the therapists for a performing the activity well. The patient would receive an approving smile for doing a great job in the activity.
