FIRST AID CHECKLIST

For professional truck drivers

Knowing how to respond in accident situations is critical to saving lives and minimising injuries. The IRU and the UICR have developed this first aid checklist to help road transport professional drivers prepare themselves to respond accordingly in emergency situations. This checklist has been reviewed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

4 STEPS To EmERgEnCY RESPonSE

1. Assess the situation
Quickly assess the scene of the accident and be cautious and avoid being involved in one yourself. If help has already arrived to the site, keep driving.

3. Alert competent authorities

112

Call emergency services, and inform them of any dangers present (fire, chemical products) and of the situation. What happened? Where? How many are injured? Stay calm and follow instructions. * other national numbers may apply

2. Protect and secure the area

Use your on board safety equipment to secure the area. You will prevent additional accidents and warn other road users to drive cautiously.

4. Provide assistance
Approach victims and assess the nature of their injuries. Perform all necessary actions to keep them calm and minimise their injuries while emergency services arrive.

RECovERY PoSITIon
If the victim is unconscious and breathing, you should place them in the recovery position by: turning them gently and without causing injury to a stable lateral position, making sure their face is facing downwards and their mouth is open. The recovery position allows the victim to keep their airways clear and avoid choking while unconscious. You should keep an eye on the victims breathing in the recovery position until the emergency services arrive.

CARDIo-PULmonARY RESUSCITATIon
If the victim is unconscious and not breathing, perform the following steps:
1) Tilt the head backwards, gently lift the chin, and make sure the airway is clear 4) Firmly push down with both hands 5-6 cm on the chest 30 times (with a rhythm of 2 chest compressions /sec) followed by 2 breaths.

2) Check for breathing max 10 sec: If the victim is not breathing, begin CPR and ask if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available.

5) Breath into the victims mouth 2 times. You should see the victims chest rising.

3) Place one hand on the middle of the victims chest and the other hand atop the first and position yourself directly above the victim.

6) Repeat cycles of 30 chest compressions for 2 breaths until an AED or emergency services arrives or breathing resumes.

WoUnDS: BLEEDIng, BURnS AnD BITES

In case of bleeding, use materials in your first aid kit to apply compression to the wound. If possible, use a clean tissue or compress protecting your hand. In cases of burns, the burned area must be cooled with cold water (1525C) as soon as possible, and should continue to cool until pain subsides.

Elevate the wound applying direct pressure on the wound with a compression bandage.

In cases of animal bites or other wounds, the wound should be irrigated with clean water, and medical professionals called to prevent infections like rabies or tetanus.

PREvEnTIng ACCIDEnTS
If you are feeling unwell, you should not be driving. Stop at the nearest safe place. Call a medical professional and follow recommendations for recovery. Rest and recover fully before continuing to drive.
