The Major Sins by Shaykh Ahmad Hendricks - seventeen major sins It is crucial for a Muslim to have some understanding

of the major (kaba'ir) and minor (sagha'ir) sins, what the major sins are, the difference between these two categories of sin and how ultimately to avoid them. A related question, which we will leave for a later discussion, is the reasons why people fall into sin in the first place. The quality and level of our spiritual life fundamentally depend on that knowledge. An important point to bear in mind is that according to the Quran our minor sins will not be forgiven until and unless we refrain from the major ones. "If you refrain from the kaba'ir (major sins) you have been prohibited from, We will expiate your sayyi'aat (minor sins) and place you in the Jannah." [Surah al-Nisaa, v.31]. The Nabi, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, clarified the intention of this verse when he said," The five daily prayers (salah) expiate whatever has been committed between them if the kaba'ir (major sins) are avoided". If we perform our daily salah one of the consequences is that our minor sins are forgiven on condition that we also refrain from the major sins. The hadith also implies that the solution to the major sins is repentance, and in some cases punishment (hadd), not the performance of five pillars of Islam. The major sins in fact nullify the ibadah one may be doing. This is indicated in the verse, "O you who believe obey Allah and obey His Rasul and do not nullify your actions" [Surah Muhammad, v.33]. In other words do not nullify your good deeds by committing any of the major sins. So the question is what then are the major sins? Scholars have differed on the subject from the time of the Sahabah, may Allah be pleased with all of them. A very interesting opinion was expressed by Abdallah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him. He was asked about the meaning of verse 31 of Surah al-Nisaa, and he replied, "Read from the beginning of this Surah up to verse 31 then consider all the things Allah prohibits in those verses, major sins." He consequently believed there were only four major sins. Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said there are seven major sins. He based his judgement on the well-known hadith of the al-saba'ah al-mubiqat (the seven grave sins). Abdallah ibn "Amr may Allah be pleased with him, believed there where nine. Other early scholars preferred to define it as every sin that incurs a punishment (hadd). The minor sins they say are more like faults, an inadvertence and shortcomings which are neither punishable nor is there a promise of hell fire for the one who is guilty of them. And finally Abu Hurairah may Allah be pleased with, according to certain reports, said the major sins are hidden and their number unknown like laylah al-qadr and the blessed hour of jumu'ah. Given all of these differences and the fact that knowledge of the major sins are crucial to the spiritual well-being of every Muslim later scholars decided to combine all of these views and opinions. The result of this process is summarised by Abu Talib Makki in the listing he provides. [Qut al-Qulub, pg. 365 - 7, vol. 3]. He says " As to my own position in this matter after combining the different opinions is that the major sins are seventeen: Four of the heart; 1 idolatary (shirk), 2. persistent transgression (israr), 3. loosing hope in the Mercy of Allah (qunut), 4. and to feel secure from the Divine Cunning (amn min makr Allah), Four of the tongue; 5. bearing false witness (shahadah al-zur), 6. defaming a woman of good standing (qadhf al muhsan), 7. oaths that undermine justice (al-yamin al ghamus), 8. sorcery and black magic (sihr), this includes all the actions and words used to change the perceptions, bewitch, beguile and harm other human beings. Three of the stomach; 9. drinking of wine and all kinds of intoxicants, 10. unjustly eating the wealth of orphans, 11. and consuming riba, Two of the private parts; 12. fornication (zina), 13. and anal sex (liwat), Two sins of the hand; 14. murder, 15. and stealing, One of the feet; 16. running away from the battlefield when confronted by the enemy of the Muslims, One of the entire body; 17. disrepect for ones parents."

The Major Sins --Al-Kaba'r-The major sins are those acts which have been forbidden by Allah in the Quran and by His Messenger (SAW) in the Sunnah (practise of the Prophet), and which have been made clear by the actions of of the first righteous generation of Muslims, the Companions of the Prophet (SAW). Allah Most High says in His Glorious Book: If you avoid the major (part) of what you have been forbidden (to do), We will cancel out for you your (other) evil deeds and will admit you (to Paradise) with a noble entry. (al-Nisa 4:31) Thus by this verse, Allah Most High has guaranteed the Garden of Paradise to those who avoid the major sins. And Allah Most High also says: Those who avoid the greatest of sins and indecencies, and forgive when they are angry (al-Shra 42:37) Those who avoid the greatest sins and indecencies, except for oversights, (will find that) surely your Lord is ample in forgiveness. (Al-Najm 53:32) The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happenned since the previous one when major sins have been avoided." It is therefore very important to determine exactly what the greatest vices, technically called "the major sins" (Kaba'ir), are, in order that Muslims should avoid them. There is some difference of opinion among scholars in this regard. Some say these major sins are seven, and in support of their position they quote the tradition: "Avoid the seven noxious things"- and after having said this, the propeht (SAW) mentioned them: "associating anything with Allah; magic; killing one whom Allah has declared inviolate without a just case, consuming the property of an orphan, devouring usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers but indiscreet." (Bukhari and Muslim) 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas said: "Seventy is closer to their number than seven," and indeed that is correct. The above tradition does not limit the major sins to those mentioned in it. Rather, it points to the type of sins which fall into the category of "major." These include those crimes which call for a prescribed punishment (HADD; plural, HUDUD), such as theft, fornication or adultery (ZINA), and murder; those prohibited acts for which a warning of a severe punishment in the Next is given in the Qur'an or the tradition; and also those deeds which are cursed by our Prophet (SAW). These are all major sins. Of course, there is a gradation among them, since some are more serious than others. We see that the Prophet (SAW) has included SHIRK (associating someone or something with Allah) among them, and from the text of the Qur'an we know that a person who commits SHIRK will not his sin be forgiven and will remain in Hell forever. Allah Most High says: Surely, Allah does not forgive associating anything with Him, and He forgives whatever is other than that to whomever He wills. (al-Nisa 4:48 and 116)

1. Associating partners with Allah (Shirk) (1 of 7 fatal Sins) Surely, Allah does not forgive associating anything with Him, and He forgives whatever is other than that to whomever He wills. (4:48 and 116) Open Great Shirk Idolatry: worshipping beings other than Allah Hidden Small Shirk is called Riya[showing off or Ostentation] "Should I not inform you of that which I fear for you even more than the dangers of dajjaal? [Anti-Christ]. It is the hidden shirk: Riya: A person stands to pray and he beautifies his prayer because he sees the people looking at him". 2. Committing Murder: (25 68) (2 of 7 fatal Sins) And they who do not call upon another God with Allah and do not slay the soul, which Allah has forbidden except in the requirements of justice, and (who) do not commit fornication and he who does this shall find a requital of sin (25 68) 3. Practicing black magic (2: 102) This even takes one out of the folds of Islam. Three do not enter heaven : the alcoholic, the severer of the bonds of kinship, and the one who believes in magic. 4. Not performing the Prayers (19: 59) Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up prayers and followed lusts. So they will be thrown in hell, except those who repent. (19: 59) Qur'an What has caused you to enter Hell? They will say : we were not of those who prayed. Q 5. With holding the Zakah (Charity ) (3: 180) 6. Not fasting on a Day of Ramadan without excuse "Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no true God except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the house, and fasting the month of Ramadhan" As for the believers, he who commits the sin of not fasting Ramadan with nor permission or excuse is more evil than he who commits adultery or drinking liquor. 7. Not performing Hajj, while being able to do so (above tradition) 8. Disobeying and Disrespect to parents (17:23) Thy Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them, in terms of honour. And out of kindness, lower the wing of humility to them and say : My Lord! bestow on them they mercy even as they cherished me in childhood. Q Allah's satisfaction is out of parents satisfaction, and His anger is out of theirs 9. Abandoning relatives or Cutting off the ties of relationships (47: 22) Then is it to be expected of you if you were put in authority that you will do mischief in the land an break your ties of kith and kin? Such are the men whom Allah has cursed for he has made them deaf and blinded their sights. (47:22) The Breaking of the bonds of kinship does not enter Paradise. He who believes in Allah and the Hereafter should keep in contact with his kins. What is meant in this tradition are the ones who leave their poor kins when he is wealthy, and also the ones who leave their kins by ignoring , fooling, and showing dryness towards them.. 10. Fornication and Adultery or Committing adultery or fornication (17: 32) Nor come close to Adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil,' (17: 32) Opening the road for other evils. When a man commits adultery, faith comes out of his heart and hovers above him until he leaves the sin, then faith comes back to him again. 11. Committing sodomy -- Homosexuality Tradition "Allah will not look at a person (with pleasure) who commits sodomy with a man or a woman" Sodomy is greater and uglier than adultery. 12. Taking or paying interest (Riba) (2: 275) O who you believe: Fear Allah, and give up what remains of your damned for usury, if you are indeed believers. If you do it not, take notice of war from Allah and his messenger. (2: 275) Q 13. Lying about Allah and His Messenger pbuh And on the day of resurrection you shall see those who lied against Allah; their faces shall be blackened. Is there not in hell an abode for the proud? 39:60 Forging statements concerning Allah or forging Hadith saying, traditions of the Prophet pbuh Lying on the Prophet is blasphemy, and there is no doubt that not only lying on Allah or Muhammad by permitting what is forbidden and forbidding what is permitted - is pure blasphemy. To lie on me is not like lying on any body else, he who lies on me intentionally will be placed in Hell 15. Running away from the battlefield (8:16) If any do turn his back to them on such a day unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own) - He draws on himself the wrath of Allah and his abode in Hell an evil refugee (indeed) (8:16 Qur'an 16. Wrongdoing, deception or oppression on the part of the ruler (A leader's deceiving his people and being unjust to them) The way (to blame) is only against those who oppress men and revolt in the earth unjustly; these shall have a painful punishment.
