during November-December 2012

Several SR1 residents that were relocating or just downsizing have donated a number of coats and jackets to this effort so we already have a start on this years drive! Just go through your closet and weed out those gently used but outgrown jackets, that winter coat you NEVER wear, anything extra just taking up space. You may not know who they are, but SOMEONE out there will be grateful for any jacket or coat you give them! Donations may be dropped off at the office or at the Bingo snack bar on Bingo Saturdays. (Just tell them what its for.) To request a pickup of your donation, call Jeanie at 7841997 and leave a message with the details.

MANAGERS CORNER
This is the last Managers letter for the year 2012!! Another year has passed. The management and staff wish everyone at Spanish Ranch #1 MHP a very Merry Holiday. The annual Holiday party is scheduled for Sunday, December 9, 2011 between the hours of 11am and 1pm. We look forward to seeing everyone at the large clubhouse. Be sure to complete your registration form for those attending this luncheon. We feel certain that this years Holiday Season will be no different than those in the past and that means that we all will be enjoying lots of entertaining during this Holiday Season with family and friends. With the prior comments in mind, we would like to remind all residents that Visitor Parking areas are for visitors only. There are some of our neighbors that are using the visitor parking for overflow parking for that extra vehicle. Please be kind and considerate to your neighbor and their guests and park your work and extra vehicles outside the community. If you call Spanish Ranch #1 MHP home but are not on a rental agreement, lease or not registered as a guest, you are not a visitor. A visitor is defined as an overnight guest that visits less than twenty (20) days in a row, a year or a total of less than thirty (30) days combined in a year. In this community we live close to each other. Please show respect to your neighbors by NOT sounding your horn at inopportune times (late at night or early in the morning). Please turn your radio down when entering your community. Everyone may not appreciate the sound of your new 150 watt double bass speakers as much as you do. With the Holidays upon us, most of us will be doing some special dinners and events and with that there will be more stress on our sewer system. Myth: Its a big system and a little fat down the drain will not hurt Fact: if each household in Spanish Ranch puts 4 oz. of fat (4 oz. is 1/2 cup), grease or oil down the drains each day, that is over 98 quartsor put another way over 14.5 GALLONS of sewer clogging debris down the drain EACH DAY!!! Save a sewer back up and put your grease, oil and fats into separate cans and put them in the garbage can for Fridays pickup. If you would like a very usable can for your grease, please contact the office and we can provide to you with a nice plastic can with a lid that our coffee comes in. Another cause of our sewer issues is the disposal of baby wipes into the system. This is an absolute NO NO!! You may be asking yourself how exactly can I know what is acceptable to put into the system? Here is a little test you can run. Place the material in question in a glass of water. If the material does not breakdown or dissolve in a matter of a few minutes, it needs to go into the waste basket and into the garbage for collection rather than in the sewer system Guillermo would also like to remind everyone to continue to sweep and pick up the leaves in front of your home at least once a week. The gutter areas in front of your home are your responsibility. Please be considerate and pick up the leaves and not simply sweep them down in front of your neighbors home. Be sure to clean up under the gutter ramps at your driveway. Your help will insure that our storm drains are working properly and that large lakes do not form at the storm drain inlets. The rear gate (entering the park from Pacheco) has been damaged again. Please use extra caution when entering or exiting the park through these gates. Guillermo also says Thanks for all of you that are monitoring the street lights and reporting them to the office. Keep up the good work as he continues to make Spanish Ranch a safe place to walk after dark. Jeff Stoops SR1 Assistant Manager

Guillermos Corner
Guillermo would like to commend those residents that are keeping tabs on unfamiliar vehicles parking in our community. As a result of their help, these cars have been tagged and turned over the Hayward Police Department. Guillermo says GOOD JOB!!!

must be submitted to Park Management in WRITING and must be SIGNED. Only the person with the problem or concern may file the complaint. None will be accepted from third parties on behalf of someone else. Forms are available in a bin on the wall next to the bulletin board in the main clubhouse AND in almost every issue of the El Toro. If you want your elected SR1 Assn leadership help you, please provide a copy to the SR-1 Assn. Give a copy to any member of the board or fill out the form on the website.

Have a happy and safe holiday season and hope to see you there.

Dozens of kids and their accompanying adults enjoyed a heckuva party on Oct 27, and still got to go trick-ortreating a few days later! All the games, snacks, costumes and prizes made for a lively few hours, topped off upon departure with a bag of treats. Kathi Calvert, immobilized midway through planning with casts on both an arm and a leg, had to miss the party. Stacia Higman planned the decorating aided by many volunteers. Pat, Dawn, Patti, Marvin, Peggy, Judy, Nichole, Craig, Denise and Jeanie ran the games, served snacks, set up and took down, along with an army of volunteers. Thanks to all who helped, and most especially to all the kids who came and made the event fun!

Preventing Cooking Fires During the Holidays

The Hayward Fire Department responds to cooking fires year round. Fires resulting from cooking continue to be the most common type of fire experienced by U.S. households. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of civilian fire injuries in residences. These fires are preventable by simply being more attentive to the use of cooking materials and equipment. Dont become a cooking fire casualty. Learn the facts about cooking fire safety today! When cooking, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the stove. Safe Cooking Tips The kitchen can be one of the most hazardous rooms in the home if you dont practice safe cooking behaviors. Here are some safety tips to help: Never leave boiling, frying, or broiling food unattended. Stay in the kitchen! If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. Check food that is cooking regularly; use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. Keep anything that can catch fire oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains away from your stovetop. Keep the stovetop, burners, and oven clean. Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and can catch fire if it comes in contact with a gas flame or electric burner. Have a kid-free zone of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Always use cooking equipment that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Follow manufacturers instructions and code requirements when installing, cleaning, and operating cooking equipment. Plug microwave ovens or other cooking appliances directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord for cooking appliances as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire. Check electrical cords for cracks, breaks, or damage. If You Have a Cooking Fire Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire and dont re-enter for any reason. Call 9-1-1 after you leave from a cell phone or neighbors home. If calling from a cell phone, tell the dispatcher exactly where you live as they may not be familiar with your local area. If you do try to fight the fire, be sure others are already getting out and you have a clear path to the exit. Always keep a lid nearby when youre cooking. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, leave the lid on until the pan is completely cool. In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. After a fire, the oven should be checked and/or serviced before being used again. Always call the fire department, as they have special equipment to locate hidden fire that you may have overlooked. Nuisance Smoke Alarms If a smoke alarm sounds during normal cooking, you may need to move it farther away from the kitchen (according to manufacturers instructions) and/or install a smoke alarm with a pause button. If your alarm already has a pause button, push the pause button, open the door or window, and fan the area around the alarm with a towel to get the air moving. Do not disable the smoke alarm or take the batteries out! Treat every smoke alarm activation as a possible fire and react quickly and safely to the alarm. Burns and Scalds Hospital emergency rooms treat around 29,850 thermal burns and 8,460 burns caused by cooking equipment. Ranges accounted for 62% of these thermal burns and grills 28%. Microwaves accounted for 41% of the scald burns. (Source: NFPA) Because microwaves are the leading cause of scald burns, be extra careful when opening a heated food container. Heat food in containers that are marked microwave safe. Since foods heat unevenly in the microwave, make sure you stir and test the food before eating. Protecting Children from Scalds and Burns As the statistics suggest, young children are at a high risk of being burned by hot food and liquid. You can help prevent these injuries by following a few basic tips: Keep children at least 3 feet away from where food and drink are being prepared or carried. Keep hot foods and liquids away from the table or counter edges. Use the stoves back burners if you have young children in the home. Never hold a child while cooking, drinking, or carrying hot foods or liquids. Also, teach children that hot things burn! TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME

WALKING SAFETY
We have seen news accounts of walkers who were struck by drivers or victims of robbery or sexual assault. Taking a nice stroll is supposed to be a healthy and relaxing activity, but it can be hazardous if you do not take caution. The following tips and suggestions are offered to help make your next stroll a little safer. Have a planned route. Let someone know when you leave, the route you will take, and the time you plan to return. Carry your identification and cell phone when you walk or run. Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings. Dont wear earphones with the volume turned up to the point you cant hear the approaching danger. Wear a traffic vest or have something with reflective material on it. You may chose to write your name, telephone number and blood type on the garment or in your shoes. Walk with a friend or two. You may want to walk with your dog if s/he is big enough to keep up. Dont wear jewelry or carry money when you walk. If you carry money, just

Submitted by SR1s Neighborhood Watch

carry a few dollars. Never walk/run in or near unpopulated areas. Stay away from abandoned buildings or property. Stay away from secluded paths when walking alone. Trust your feelings and intuitions when it comes to various situations you may encounter. Do not simply dismiss them. Run/walk against traffic so you can see approaching vehicles. Watch for obstacles and problems where you walk such as unleashed dogs, suspicious individuals or vehicles.

Minutes of the SR1 Board MeetingNovember 1, 2012

Meetings of the elected Spanish Ranch I Executive Board are held on the first Thursday of each month (unless otherwise announced) at 7:00 p.m. in the main clubhouse. ALL residents are welcome to attend!

Meeting called to order at 7 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said. In attendance: All officers and board members were present except Treasurer Peggy Nichols who was sick. 1 guest. Minutes of the October meeting were reviewed and approved. Treasurers Report: None in the absence of the treasurer. Resident Concerns: President Pat received a phone call from an angry resident asking why residents werent informed as to what was going on in reference to a recurring water shutoff several days in a row. Pat explained that the association has no control over this and suggested they call management. Barbara reported dumpster diving by an unidentified man after dark. Several in attendance reported similar sightings. She hollered at the man and he left. It was pointed out that taking recyclables out of the bin provided by Tri-CED is illegal, plus the company relies on the value of the recycled materials to offset their costs and keep the costs to the residents down. Residents observing someone going through their trash or recycling are encouraged to call out to the person from a safe place to stop, and if they dont leave immediately to call the police. SOCIAL Halloween Party was deemed a success. Kudos all around to coordinator Kathi Calvert who did a lot of the prep work despite having first a leg, then also an arm in a cast, and to all who stepped in to make the party happen. Chili Supper is next up on December 1. A flyer taken from the El Toro page will go out midmonth with the addition of a cutoff date for reservations of November 28. COMMITTEES: Craft Fair Jeanie passed on info from Patti that all tables are sold and breakdown help is needed. Several calls came at the last minute. Helping Handno calls this month. COMMUNITY: NERT: Had only two people for the October creek cleanup (Marvin and Jeanie), but litter was manageable and they were able to pick up the whole stretch except for a shopping cart in the water at the Pacheco (back gate) end. Jeanie painted out the minimal graffiti at the Pacheco end a day or so before.

An Emergency Prep meeting will be scheduled for January. A basic emergency response plan is in place for a major disaster, but further work on getting a system of notification for minor emergencies is needed. A recent water outage illustrated the need for a functioning phone tree. Neighborhood Watch meets Dec. 11. Clint reported no calls and also no response to inquiries of the PD about a recent failure to respond to multiple calls. OLD BUSINESS: HMOANeed position filled, though information from HMOA is coming directly to the El Toro editor. NEW BUSINESS: Water interruptions. Many complaints about the water shutoffs, which happened off and on for four days in late October. Attempts were made to notify people before the first shutoff when a break was discovered under a unit on Balein with limited success. Subsequent interruptions were apparently without notice. Discussion centered around the need to get a phone tree up and operational. A canvas by NERT last summer turned up a few residents willing to participate but a substantial number would be needed to make a phone tree effective. This topic will be discussed at the next Emergency Prep meeting. It was noted that Assistant Manager Jeff spent a lot of time answering phone calls from residents inquiring about the outage even though it was after hours, and the effort was appreciated. It was suggested that the parks answering machine message could be temporarily revised to advise residents of the problem and a possible time of resolution, which would satisfy most callers, yet still provide an opportunity to leave a message for a call back if that wasnt what they were calling about. Pat will ask manager Teresa if something like this could be done. Respectfully submitted, Jeanie Schultz, Secretary
