La Terapia ocupacional (T.O.

) es definida por la Asociacin Americana de Terapia Ocupacional en 1968 como "El arte y la ciencia de dirigir la respuesta del hombre a la actividad seleccionada para favorecer y mantener la salud, para prevenir la incapacidad, para valorar la conducta y para tratar o adiestrar a los pacientes con disfunciones fsicas o psicosociales". Recientemente, la Asociacin Profesional Espaola de terapeutas ocupacionales calificaba a la T.O. como "la disciplina socio sanitaria que evala la capacidad de la persona para desempear las actividades de la vida cotidiana e interviene cuando dicha capacidad est en riesgo o daada por cualquier causa. El terapeuta ocupacional utiliza la actividad con propsito y el entorno para ayudar a la persona a adquirir el conocimiento, las destrezas y actitudes necesarias para desarrollar las tareas cotidianas requeridas y conseguir el mximo de autonoma e integracin". Respecto de los campos de actuacin propios de la terapia ocupacional se mencionan:
1. Discapacidades fsicas y sensoriales 2. Drogodependencia 3. Educacin 4. Geriatra 5. Marginacin social 6. Pediatra 7. Discapacidad Intelectual 8. Rehabilitacin laboral 9. Salud mental 10. Trastornos neurolgicos 11. Trastornos postquirrgicos 12. Intervencin comunitaria

Tratamiento de las patologas ms frecuentes

La T.O. es incluida en el tratamiento de rehabilitacin del accidente cerebrovascular y la hemipleja; las enfermedades degenerativas del Sistema Nervioso Central; las lesiones ceflicas y el traumatismo craneoenceflico; la parlisis cerebral infantil; el retraso psicomotor y los trastornos del aprendizaje; las lesiones de la mdula espinal; las amputaciones; las lesiones traumatolgicas y quemaduras; los trastornos reumticos; la ceguera; las afecciones psiquitricas; el abuso de drogas, en personas con insuficiencia renal, cncer, sida, etc.

Ayudas tcnicas y adaptaciones

Los T.O. tienen un rol importante en materia de ayudas tcnicas y adaptaciones as como en la evaluacin e implementacin de ortesis y prtesis; las tcnicas de transferencias y movilidad en la cama; las transferencias asistidas y las independientes; las tcnicas de levantamiento; el manejo de la silla de ruedas; la movilidad del individuo con discapacidad y la deteccin de barreras arquitectnicas y urbansticas y el abordaje de los problemas de movilidad en el hogar.
