1. Introduction: This lesson will be a reintroduction of the four seasons. By this time, most students have covered this science topic in previous grades. The activities will draw on the students current knowledge and experiences and the students will have the opportunity to use new software they may or may not have been exposed to. Students will be able to add details using the software programs and use their creativity to communicate their ideas. Their presentation will be basic and use their current knowledge. Pictures and graphics will be drawn by students on Microsoft Paint. The first few days focus on the students gathering information and making a list of characteristics. The last few days will go over using the technology. The last day they will give their presentation. Extra days for extension activities or reteaching lesson. Nature and Scope: Students will be continuing this subject into the following week. This review of seasons will allow students to discover more details in each seasons characters, because the will be covering one seasons per group. 2. Standards and Learner Outcomes CO Content Standards Reading and Writing STANDARD 2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences. write and speak for audiences such as peers, teachers, and the community; The presentation piece allows students to write and speak to their peers on the subject they are learning. Science Standard 2 Physical Science: Students know and understand common properties, forms, and changes in matter and energy. (Focus: Physics and Chemistry) Students research the characteristics and physical properties of the seasons they choose. 1

They will also have a creative piece of creating a digital drawing of their season. 2. Objective: 1. Students will list the characteristics of their season. 2. Students will explain their season through an oral and visual presentation on Microsoft PowerPoint. 3. Students will create a computerized drawing of their season on Microsoft Paint 3. Instructional Aids and/or Resources Instructional Materials: Teacher Materials: 2 Computers and Internet access Microsoft PowerPoint and Promethean board Microsoft Paint (under accessories in startup menu) 4. Curriculum Outline and Instructional Strategies Opening (approx 15) 1. Gaining Attention: Tell students they have an important job, because they will be creating a group presentation (give examples: Like a weather man does on television every day.) 2. Prior Knowledge: Ask students if they remember what their 5 senses are: smell, touch, sight, hearing, taste. The students have covered a lesson on their 5 senses and let them know we use some of those senses to tell what season we are in. 3. Purpose (Objective) of Lesson: Let students know that they will be doing a creative project each day and they will also be learning about how to use a computer software program called Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Paint. Body (5 days of 30 minutes for 2 groups) 4. Once students understand the objective, next review the seasons. 5. Day 1: Divide into four groups. Ask students to answer the questions on their forms Write the name of the season your group will work on. Write down 4 characteristics of this season How do people dress during this season? Write down 4 clothing items associated with this season. 2

1. Day 1:View the websites and gather information. 2. Day 2: Demonstrate how to use Microsoft Paint . Have each student create their pictures based on the characteristic they will be presenting (i.e. the winter is cold = student would draw picture depicting a cold wintery scene.) 3. Day 3: Demonstrate how to use PowerPoint. Have 2 groups work on this project today (one group at a time to allow for teacher assistance). 4. Day 4: Have the other 2 groups work on their PowerPoint presentations. Ensure all groups have completed their PowerPoint presentations. 5. Day 5: Have students practice their presentations once. After lunch students will give their final presentations to the class. Closure (15 minutes) 6. After the presentations the teacher will ask students if they liked using this visual tool. Explain to students how many people use this tool to explain things with pictures. Explain how weather reporters use a visual map of the United States to show people the weather in their area. Tell students they will be using computers all throughout education and stress the importance of learning how to use computers to help their learning. 7. Instructional Strategies: Demonstration 8. Organizational Plans: Both independent computer use and team collaboration using computers. 5. Integration of Educational Technology 5.11 CSU-P Standard A. Uses various technology tools to individualize and extend instruction and expand the classroom, using such strategies as: collaborative learning, and individualized learning. The use of the PowerPoint Presentation is to have students begin working in groups with roles. The software itself is to help students create a finished product that they have all contributed toward as a group. The Microsoft Paint project allows students to create an individualized project that uses technology and introduces them to a new computer program. 6. Evaluation Assessment Students will need to further their skills on the new software programs and presentation skills. This lesson is to introduce new technology, and working in groups while learning about the seasons. The assessment will be judged on the completion of their forms and drawing project, and the participation in the group and with the presentation.

7. Alternate Plans Reteaching Activities Show students pictures that represent the seasons, ask them to identify which season the picture belongs in. Create a Venn Diagram (this will show similarities and differences in each season) Extension Activities Have students race to the dress up area and don the correct clothing for the season you call out, make it a race.
