PhD Research consulting for types of data collection methods All types of educational research require data collection,

whether it is medical education or marketing research. Data collection is the task of systematic collection of data from various sources for the purpose of gathering information. Data is the source of information on the basis of which certain conclusions can be drawn for future use. Data collection is one of the most vital processes and understanding its basic concept helps in selecting right approach for the task. Data collection is divided in two categories, namely: Qualitative and quantitative technique of data collection. Quantitative data, as is evident from its name, is numerical in nature and is measurable in terms of quantity. It can be mathematically computed; for example, average height of males in India. Quantitative data can be measured using different scale, classified as nominal scale, ordinal scale, interval scale and ratio scale. Qualitative data is nonnumerical and is descriptive or nominal in nature. Thus we can interpret that data collection takes place in the form of words and sentences. While collecting data, the types of data influence the selection of method of data collection. There are various methods; some of these are as follows: Questionnaire: is a type of data collection method, which is mostly followed by researchers to gain information from subjects. It is a form, with a set of questions. It is also one of the cheapest methods to collect data. Questionnaires are of two types- online questionnaires and paper questionnaires. Interviews: Interviews are costlier than questionnaire method of data collection and ensure authenticity of the data collected. This method is not relevant in case of large size of sample. Interviews are further of many types namely; personal interviews, telephonic interviews etc. Observation: This method is based on perception and observation of the evaluator. The evaluator can note down the observations by obtrusive and unobtrusive method, depending on the situation. Survey: is a method of case study to obtain data from a subset of the entire population for practical and efficient analysis. But survey method should

categorize sample population otherwise; it can cause irrelevant collection of data. Document or record reviews: It involves review of documented data which is collected from some agency. This is a form of secondary data.
