Hysys Demonstration Learning Outcomes

Create, edit, solve, and save Hysys cases (files) Specify simulation basis such as components, fluid packages, reactions, etc. Draw Hysys BFD, specify input data, simulate processes, and look up / interpret results List the main steps in using Hysys Solve Exercises 1-4

Hysys: Simulation Basis Manager

Hypothetical Components

Introduce new chemicals in the simulation which hysys do not allow Solids, Electrolytes, Polymers, Coal, etc. Very critical step All the correlations used for PVT behavior, calculating physical
properties like viscosity, thermal conductivity, etc. Several ways of calculating density of Methane at 1 atm and 200 C? No standard way of selecting a fluid package

Fluid Package

Classification of chemicals

Number of stage will vary depending upon your fluid package. Hydrocarbon System: Non Polar Chemical System: Polar

Equation of State

Hydrocarbons Non Polar Properties of liquid as well as gas

Activity Models

Used for liquid phase only

Multiple Package

Hysys accepts all the input

Do not work when SOLVER HOLDING button is pressed Colors are important in Hysys How to increase the pressure of stream?

Pump: Liquids Compressor: Gases

Follow systematic approach: One stream/module at a time

Steps to follow

Read, Analyze, and How to get the missing information Draw PFD on a paper?

How will you simulate it in Hysys?

Hysys BFD

Specify all the input data, equipment parameters, operating data.

Define simulation basis using Simulation Basis Manager

Components Fluid Package Reactions Add Reactions to the Fluid package

Draw Hysys BFD using Simulation Environment

Some Key Pointers for Hysys

Always watch RED/GREEN signal in Hysys

If Hysys is not responding to your actions, look at the signal Do not input any data, if the signal is RED
Hysys will take any input, when sleeping, but will cry consistency error, when you wake it up

Saturated liquid (vapor) is a stream at its BPT (DPT)

To make a stream saturated, specify 0 (1) for liquid (vapor) NEVER input vapor fraction = 0, just because a stream is liquid Set its flow to zero, if it is an adiabatic unit

Always add an energy stream, if a module allows Know the difference between recovery and purity Mixing streams must be at the same pressure Reactor temperature is the outlet temperature

Consistency Error
Contradicting information: Your input contradicts with what Hysys
computes

Most common cause: Over-specification of data Hysys sleeping: By specifying P, T, f, before composition! Hysys awake but not a systematic way of giving the input Never specify anything that Hysys can compute Specify data systematically not all together or randomly Composition first In general, never specify any output value, unless Hysys needs it Every error turns the signal RED Return to green, before giving any data! Delete extra inputs or anything that Hysys would know & turn signal GREEN Repeat until no consistency error & signal remains GREEN

Illustrate two scenarios How to avoid?

Understand & resolve each error before going further

Important Notes

Answers are based on Hysys property package, COMtherm, Hysys Databank No exercise involves unsteady state operations (e.g. Furnace, Tank, PID, etc.) Numerical answers, where given, are a ROUGH GUIDE only. Do not be overly concerned about getting them EXACTLY
